The Ford F-150 Flareside is a Great Truck with a Ridiculous Bed!
Click to Subscribe! ► goo.gl/x9qFdW
Let's go back to 1992 with this unique and weird special edition of the Ford F-150! The Flareside was a “form over function” lifestyle vehicle that was marketed towards yuppies and baby boomers with nostalgia for '40s and '50s trucks. Why would anyone want to buy a utility vehicle that was made less useful in the name of style? Watch to find out!

That is a great truck. Looks way more cool now than they did new. I remember not being fond of the flareside then. Now it looks awesome.
I have the exact same truck, no rust, 5.8, runs and shifts perfectly. It's got a few dings and minor scratches. Beautiful truck, great to look at. I use it for Home Depot runs and yard work. Wondering what the reaction would be if cleaned up and brought to car shows.

The reaction would be pure love with a side of envy. Love thy truck.
This is my favorite vehicle of all the ones you've owned. This truck is old enough for retro appeal, and as you said, modern enough to have things like fuel injection. Not too many Flare Side F150s on the road, let alone clean ones like this.
What do you think of the Flareside? Rad? Weird? Terrible? Also a couple CORRECTIONS! 4WD had twin traction beam suspension, 2WD has twin I-beam! Also, it doesn't appear as though the Flareside was originally available with leather.

Reminds me of my old stepside bed '00 Ranger XLT. I actually hate the look of the stepside and from a practical perspective it doesn't make sense (I can climb into the bed using the rear bumper lol) and I thought the stepside Rangers looked ugly. The F150 doesn't look too bad tho. Maybe it's just that boxy styling that gets me haha.

@@SgtSnazzerino Stepside Ranger! OMG
My old man had one (a '95 single cab) with the inline-6 that had a million mile reset on the odometer already. Was on its way to its first 100k miles before someone stole it. Those engines were legendary. I miss that truck. So practical for....trucky..things. And yet, still pretty cool in a time that feels like trucks have become a symbol of wealth, ya know? BTW been a fan since your Tacoma video way back (which eventually convinced me to buy an '02 myself) Love the vids, man!
Probably my favorite pickup ever made, my dad just sold his super clean 95 F350, I know he’ll regret it soon 😂
I have a baby blue one that used to belong to my paw paw, 1 owner .. I get a lot of compliments on it
I absolutely love the look of these trucks, I’m jealous! I can’t remember the last time I saw one on the road, and never in this condition. Here any of them left are pretty beaten up.
Flaresides in any pickup is always my favorite.
I got a singlecab in blue, love the flareside look, everyone compliments the truck!
Having a bed without wheel wells can be more useful for some than a regular bed. Lol Pops had one in early 90s so I guess it's nothing crazy to me.
You scored a real beauty with that flare side
Modern cars should bring back those movable quarter windows! A lot of new cars have huge rakish windshields where there IS a glass panel there, but they never move! Speaking of movement, interesting energy that moving camera adds to the video, I dig it!
Great truck. My old 95 F-150 had a standard bed, but it still reminds me of it.
I loved mine it had a 5.0 with 6in lift 35in tires wish I still had it
I just got my 90 cavalier RS wagon out of hibernation yesterday and was thinking about your videos. Being it's from SC, its a solid straight car. Could stand a paint job, and interior work, but I have a Z24 parts car for that. I already switched the hood and the airbox to the functional ones from the z. Since the wagon is an RS with the 3.1, it'll get the dash from the parts Z24 as well since they use the same dash. Love this old Ford truck you snagged up.
theyve been around. were always called stepsides. ford just rebranded it flareside. it gives you a box with no wheel well intrusion and the ability to step up on the exterior sides. hence the name stepside. its a tradeoff that some preferred. i think there was a ranger one too. looks to be in nice shape. good ol trucks.
These 9th gen trucks are great. I had a 94 F-250, but it was the XLT Extended Cab like your Flare Side. Great visibility, comfortable to drive, back seat is good for a dog or groceries, and they're pretty good looking I think. And still kinda cheap.
You have a decently running and driving vehicle in your fleet???? GASP!!! Really though, nice pickup!! I bet you're going to get lots of attention from pickup enthusiasts :)

@@SgtSnazzerino I'm not driving this truck much right now!! Still just over $5/gal near me but seem to be trending downward I think
Keep looking for a low miles one of these but the price tags are high…hopefully someday I’ll get one of these and a 65 mustang, I hate modern complex cars
They actually had a Flarside in the 80s too. The trend didn't really go away until after the 11th gen F150s. The 90s ones did it the best in my opinion..especially if you got one in a rad Teal, purple or pink with body matched grill. Or the mark iii conversion models with rad graphics. 9th gen F150s have always been one of my favorite Ford pickups
Such a cool truck and such an awesome video. I watched it a few days ago on Patreon. Just getting around to watching it on KZread now.
I wanted one sooooo bad! There was a guy who lived like 2-3 miles up the road from me and he has one with a custom “magazine truck” paint job with oem chme wheels and all the factory chrome everywhere else. I got to see it every day when I would drive home. Now he’s got it in a carport under a car cover
Beautiful truck, I love the 9th gen flareside. You should see the Mark III trim, that's what I have in my flareside and Its got wood interior that's real wood and a limousine light.
I have 1 108k mile 1994 f-150 4x4 regular cab short bed 5.0 and 5 speed. I get 18 mpg just by shifting before 3k rpm’s and I go 65 on the highway. I put new 31”X10.5 tires on and now going 70mph on the freeway i’m at about 2k rpm’s. If you just put around in the low end torque with a manual transmission then you can get the best mileage possible with them. the old automatics were super slow and slushy. they wasted so much more gas too!
Awesome truck bro and thanks for sharing it, and your right Ethan it's hard to find a clean truck like yours especially in California
Great looking truck! You finally have a vehicle that works lol Don't break it is an awesome truck
Excellent video man! Loved the camerawork. I never realized these had 2 gas tanks! Gotta be brutal to fill with the current prices in California 😱. Keep up the good work dude!

When I was 12 years old I lived in rural Alberta, Canada. One of our neighbors on our remote gravel road had a pinkish-color Flareside, regular cab. I always thought it was really cool despite (or because of?) the color.
Such a cool truck! Makes me wonder who bought it new because its such an interesting and peculiar spec.
The Flareside is cool, but I only have eyes for that white Sport with the roll bar and the graphics in that ad at the end 😍

Yes, those are raddddddddd
i have a 95 flareside that i got on my 17th bday. she still wears her original light opal paint with 187000 miles. out shines most new vehicles
I have a 1995 Flareside extended cab with the 5.0 in it. My grandpa bought it brand new then gave it to my dad my dad gave it to me when I got my license. I couldn't of asked for a better first vehicle. I have videos of it on my channel but I'm terrible at "public speaking" so it's pretty funny/cringey. The truck is currently sitting. The transmission has been rebuilt and its in storage.
I always wanted one of these! Man I’m surprised you can still find these at a reasonable price
just got my dads [rip] its a 95 XLT with extended cab and bed shell. been sitting awhile .just need some TLC.
Now that you mention the 4.9i here in south america was a pretty good engine but not as recognized as the unkillable 221 and 188s straight sixes from the Falcons, Fairlanes and F-Series trucks, though the 4.9i was and is still quite the strong engine like the 221
I test drove one of these new, single cab in whatever cool purple color they had that year. Best thing about it was that it was a 5-spd manual. Don't remember why I didn't buy it, but maybe I should have solely for the fact that if I still had it today, it would be one of the only manual F-150's on the road.
My neighbors growing up had a f350 in this gen with the 5.8 and manual transmission. I wouldn’t doubt it if that truck is still on the road.
It was almost $100 to fill up my ford probe the other day. I would imagine filling up that truck would require you to sell your house and your lungs lol.

@@HelloRoad my head gasket leak almost entirely fixed itself, (The noise wasn’t quite as bad as what it sounded like in your video but it was a very similar tone). then I used “K-seal” to fix any residual leaking. There’s still an exhaust leak but it’s running great, unfortunately there is still a weird burning smell that I can’t quite figure out.
What a great video, yet again. So much detail and interesting data. Not a fan of these, but still a great view !
I have owned 2 they are by far the best truck.
I have a 94 flareside and it is very hard to find a toolbox for the bed and other parts, I don’t use my truck for sport I use it mostly for small work but they are very nice and cool
I would love that truck in a single cab!!!
"It was the start of a trend, for better or for worse, of pickup trucks as a(n) urban lifestyle statement." Ethan, in isolation there is nothing wrong with the 'form over function' approach of this Flareside but decades later, we are stuck with a proliferation of utterly wasteful, 3 ton pickups with 5 foot beds that are merely self-indulgence. Let's see if a prolonged elevation of fuel prices diminishes that automotive fad. In the meantime, enjoy your 351 Windsor! 😁

Bruh. If that is truly a 5.8 Windsor under the hood, you have a unicorn. It is the same drivetrain as the ford lightning you referenced in this video. Both were 351Ws but not the same otherwise. The Lightning engine had different heads, intake. throttle body and cam, among other enhancements. The transmission was beefed up and the rear differential came with 4.10 gears and limited slip. But it's still a really cool truck and worth hanging on to.

History inversion. In the late 50's, and all the way through the early 70's the step side (different mfgr used different labels) was regarded as the work truck, while the fleetside, styleside, et al were slightly more effete: they were the 'lookers' - and more often seen with the upper interior trim packages, e.g. Ford's Ranger, XLT, and Chevy's Cheyeene early, then Silverado later. And nobody put power windows / power seats in a truck, for God's sake :)
