Well, finding out there's nothing more to it does spoil my enjoyment of the ending a good bit as without an actual explanation for why anything happened it feels very reminiscent of an SCP article that just 'redacts' everything the writer couldn't figure out. Without reason, the nuke feels less like a big reveal ala Hotline Miami 2 and more like the game was just trying to rush to mimic HL2's ending. Regardless, the game was free and very fun, and I do honestly recommend giving it a go, I even replayed a few levels while editing.

In Hotline Miami 2 and this game, both have the 'Fuck you, everyone dies'' ending. But the difference is that in HM is that you CAN find out the bigger picture and get all the clues and secrets. The ending won't change. Everyone still dies. But if the player cares about the story then it will be revealed to them. There should be a disconnect with the player and the characters. Just because the characters don't want to know or can't know the full story, doesn't mean the player shouldn't as well.
@GermanPeter
Жыл бұрын
In this case, no. There is no disconnect between the player and the characters they're controlling on purpose. Restarting/ respawning is canon in-universe, same as being able to see everything from a top down view (you can tell because characters will look at each other through walls). Your final action in the game is even to let go, one both you and Engineer have to make, essentially. The gameplay never stops, which is why the safe house is filled with explosive barrels, destructible walls and locked doors, as if the player was expected to cause some carnage at any moment. And since the player and the characters are one and the same, they will never see the bigger picture. I mean, why would they? Would it benefit gameplay? No. And all the characters get wiped off the face of the earth at the end, because their purpose is fulfilled. Both in the game since the woman pulling the strings got what she wanted, and outside the game, since the game is now done. The whole point of Engineer is to show the player that they will always be unable to peel the covers back, no matter how much they try. There will always be questions left unanswered, and that's fine. That's not what the game is about, anyway. It's about these characters and their relationships, and where living in a world of violence will get you.

@@GermanPeter You might be right about what that meant, but nothing in this video at least implies they must have died in the explosion more-so than they survived. It showed them "disappearing" just before the explosion hit, and then showed them "dead" in a more abstract way afterwards. But if they disappeared, how could the explosion have hit them? Did they travel back in time, or just stop time for a few seconds - then die when they re-appeared in the same spot? That latter explanation seems less likely given Medic talked about having a plan and being able to save "at least one life." I doubt a man of his intelligence would make a mistake. I think they probably did survive, or at least Heavy likely did. The "afterlife" scenes at the end of the game could very well have been done many years later, so it isn't as though them showing up there means they didn't survive for longer.

The entire time having Pyro be always "there" and imagining the absolute horrific carnage and death, only for him to reject the death of everyone at the end. You do one last missions with everyone, with Pyro having the final mission with the main bad guy absolutely horrified about someone who straight up "didn't care" and didn't become a Mercenary for a "reason." If you've read fanfiction or any other reddit-type-comment-tryingtoexplain-shit, it seems people are always stuck between fiction and reality. Really, the writers for Valve's games, and especially for TF2 have done such a tremendious job writing the games, imagining the characters, that most of this thought process is lost to the fans and perhaps nowadays, even themselves. (Personally I think the TF2 "official comic series" actually sucked, kind of. It was enjoyable, at parts.) They are such odd characters that just any kind of story or character arc doesn't just.. work on them. They are very hard to build. Almost all fanfics suffer from this. People don't and can't properly relate to these murderous killing machines without 'degrading' them to their own personal level. We don't get them. Put though, persumably, even the Administrator/Announcer has her own story. Whilst cold-blooded because of her ultimate goal, It's hard to think that "TF2 mercs are just like any goons, they'll just be discarded off" is in any way viable, really. Even the idea that "They had aspirations and dreams, and all of them were kind of forced into this life" is just.. a little.. downgrading? It's hard for me to see it any other way. I did enjoy story, just like any story can be enjoyed, but I hope people don't find it 100% a correct representation of TF2. Except the murder. And music. With the murder.

I can definitely agree that reading the dev’s explanation lowered my opinion on the game. Setting up a bunch of questions and then answering none of them, while maybe realistic (and that’s a strong maybe), is also lazy writing that just leaves the audience unsatisfied. If nothing else, there should’ve been a cutscene/secret ending that provided the audience with the answers the mercs couldn’t know, so the audience wouldn’t be left completely devoid of answers. We are not the mercenaries, and realism doesn’t justify leaving your audience completely in the dark. That being said, I do get a feeling there might be a sequel at some point. Why would Peter have said they would “see each other again, but not anytime soon,” if the mercs would just going into the afterlife? Or why would they show the medic activating his invention if it was never going to work? I’m wondering if they might not have survived because of the invention, or are maybe being sent back to the mortal world for some reason. If so, and it is actually the set up for a sequel, I hope that the dev decides to stop claiming “realism,” and actually ties up at least some of the loose threads from this game.
@GermanPeter

Dissatisfaction over not getting answers IS the point. These are hired goons, their job is to kill, they're not there to get answers. You, the player, only exist to get them to kill people, and don't deserve answers either. There is no disconnect between you and the mercs, even game mechanics like restarting and seeing everything in a top down view are canon to the universe. Not everything in life is satisfying, and art doesn't have to accommodate to your desires. It can be annoying, frustrating, disheartening. I see little reason to give the player what they wanted, when the whole point of the game was that living in a world of violence will only get you death and nothing else. Just because the player does not live in that universe doesn't mean they should get more.

That ending kinda felt like the dev just... Wanted to be done making the game with how abrupt it was and how the investigation plotline went literally nowhere. You make Medic into DIO, give Demoman Killer Queen: Bites the Dust, and give the engineer a straight-up ASHPD, realism is already out the window there.
@GermanPeter
Жыл бұрын
Realism doesn't mean you can't have fantastical elements. Suspension of disbelief is a thing, and in-universe, these mechanics exist. The universe just has to follow the rules it has created, and the game still does just that. Medic being able to stop time doesn't allow him to escape a nuclear bomb. Engineer being able to create portals doesn't make him a private investigator. And just because you survived 25 levels of carnage doesn't mean you'll be rewarded with answers to every question.
@randomcanadian6298

@@GermanPeter The engineer being able to create portals specifically with the ASHPD give him an out however. A genius engineer assuming he's going into a trap and his death after the investigation doesn't leave an unactivated portal, say, at the safe house in case of an emergency? The ASHPD can verifiably allow at least a distance of 384,400 km between portals and still work. And after the investigation he ignores the explosive two feet away from him to talk on the phone instead of immediately trying to make sure the bomb wasn't active? It feels like the investigation was in name alone and had no impact on the story at all, where there was at least one obvious point it should have had even the slightest impact which was the end. HLM2's nuke ending at least worked mechanically in that the characters were normal dudes that were just good at violence with no way out, no so much with the ASHPD post-investigation Engie.

@@randomcanadian6298 You're applying Portal 2 logic to this game's logic, which doesn't work. He can't "just" teleport himself out of there, this isn't how the portal gun works in this game. If you want to go by in-game logic, you can only have portals in one level, not across two levels. So there are limitations to how it can work. He ignored the nuke because he was more interested in getting answers. Like the ending said, his hubris was his downfall. Yes, he could have maybe disarmed it, had he immediately dropped the call. But he was trying to prove to himself that he really was the smartest, which only worked against him. And of course he could have never uncovered anything substantial, because he's a hired goon and the woman pulling the strings made sure he knew nothing. None of them would’ve gotten the answer to why there is a nuke at the place, there choice of being a Mercenary, no questions asked is what got them killed. However since you are the creator, I could be completely wrong and didn’t read it right which is fine. I just found the nuke to be too on the nose to show that none of them were going to get out of it.

@@GermanPeter I will say, while I understand the criticisms against it, I did like this more than HM2. Since, I was never a fan of the way the Fans were built up so much, and then just killed off in such an unceremonious way, and then more or less swept under the rug, especially when they were easily the most interesting part of the game. With Midnight Mercs, while I obviously would have liked some answers, I understand why there was none. The point was that the mercenaries were never important, even in the actual TF2 lore, it's pure circumstance that they're important, when any other hired mercenary could just as easily fill the same roles. Plus, I had to literally pause this video and sit in an uncomfortable silence for quite a while at "Press L to Let Go" that......fucked me up.

This game was released this year right? And they had some comic references. Weird that some names are wrong though - Medic is canonically Ludwig, not Heilburger. The Scout one is even weirder, he's supposed to be Jeremy, not Scott (and both are just generic american names). Meanwhile Misha, Jane Doe, Tavish, and Mundy are correct and also from the comics. Anyway, add a secret ending which hints at some kind of resurrection/clone setup, bam that's all you need. They're done with the real people, because they got the clones for their gravel wars. Would be pretty neat really.

Half expected Engineer to have a convenient escape button. And to decide to use it on the nuke after three resets of trying to defuse the thing.
50:07, My unasked for two cents: 33:35 is a key to a door that no longer exists. "Shade Mount". Doesn't take being Engineer to figure out that's Black Mesa. At least, that's what it could've been at some point, especially given a nuclear bomb is set off and the time and dates always come with "X minutes to midnight" like in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists' Doomsday Clock. What I think happened is at some point in the creative process, this was all going to tie in to Half-Life, Portal, and Overwatch. But then the dev looked at the story and chose to go for the unknown. That destroying one's perception of reality isn't just so you can put it back together as a healing process. That the alien you don't see is scarier than the alien that you do, because the audience's imagination is infinite. That, like he says in the reddit post, if there is a global conspiracy setting up massive slaughterfests of mercs and soldiers in abandoned warehouses one whacko probably isn't going to stop it. Unless they are " The Special", and these mercs aren't meant to be Specials. And honestly? It feels more like the nuke plotline stayed because that's how Hotline Miami 2 ended. Only it didn't have the same context to justify it. Midnight Mercs definitely worked more as a gameplay sandbox than a narrative. But with how Hotline Miami follows conspiracies and hallucinations, it's a hard act to follow.

@@GermanPeter I found this comment which explains the main reason people have an issue with your ending of things: "I dislike this ending to the game for the same reason I dislike the ending for "Oh My Gore!" it was an ending that was unsatisfying, where despite all your effort and skill, the enemy wins without your say and no chance to return and take vengeance, where all the characters you've worked alongside and grew to love to fail in their dreams. You have to watch them die through no fault of their own. One of the worst things a game can do is take away control from its players. What I feel is worse is when a game makes it so all your control never meant anything, to begin with, where you feel the best option for those characters would be to have never begun this journey, making you feel like you're walking them to their execution with no way out. It makes you feel like you murdered them yourself, and it hurts." When you consider this, it makes sense why people didn't like this ending and why your explanation annoys and even pisses some people off. It may be your game, but if people don't like it even after a retrospective and understanding the message behind the game, it means you should take another look at what you did and try to understand exactly why no one accepts your ending and even hates it in some cases. An ending can make or break a story, so you better consider things from a broader viewpoint. An ending like what you made can be accepted if done well, there was a movie from a while back that had the MCs die unceremoniously on the side of the road for no real reason, and people accepted it because it got them to think. They all walked out of the theatre, wondering what the hell they had just watched. Not because it was terrible but because it genuinely got them to think about the world and everything else, and they didn't need the director telling them what they were meant to think or what the story was about. They didn't start asking for alternate endings or anything like that or calling the director an idiot. The movie already did what it set out to do without needing outside intervention. That was to tell the story and get people to think about reality, as that was what the movie aimed to tell. The world's reality and what it means to be free in society. In comparison, your story didn't really accomplish what it was meant to do if there were people that disliked your ending and had to be told by the creator what they were meant to think about the game. You shouldn't have to tell someone what your story meant. The story should've already done that.
@egoalter1276

Furthermore, respectfully, it is completely irrelevant what you meant to tell by the story. It standa on its own, any post factum explanation by the author superflous, or I may even say, damaging. Audiences will interpret art in a myriad ways, and the authors control over that is very strenuous. You wont be there to give this same explqnation to all your players, and if you are, many of them will just ignore you and tell you to stop ordering them how to think.

Man it really sucks that there is no alternative ending especially since there is of a secret ending in hotline miami
Good video, I hope you do more things like this.
I think the teleporting guy at 9:00 might be Mr. Shifty, from the game with the same name on Steam. You're playing as a guy with a red cap and a blue jacket just going around and killing people Hotline Miami style. Main gimmick being that you can teleport around, and your punches are REALLY powerful. If it is, it's an awesome little cameo.
It’s kinda disappointing that there’s no alternative ending or secrets in the game. The first Hotline Miami did well having a character who was just cannon fodder and one who questioned and got answers.
Anyone who's played Reach will have a PTSD attack
That guy teleporting everywhere in one of engineers missions is Mr shifty from the hit game... Mr shifty I'm pretty sure at least
After your first part, i decided to play the game myself. It wasn't until I completed the bloody game that I realized the fucking Jojo's references with Demo and Medic. Medic's is obvious, stopping time for 8 seconds at a time and throwing needles instead of knives. Demo's took me a few to realize, but the ability to have enemies hit with the pipes explode in the next life at the same time they were originally hit, and it's literally just Bites The Dust.
If it makes anyone feel better, all the mercs are probably alive again since respawning is a canon thing
I think the nuke was just to reference Hotline Miami 2's ending. Altough i would have preferred the bombcart bomb being used for the model and it just being a regular bomb, a nuke does sound very overkill
Yeah, that final scout arena made me remember he had a combat roll. Also, the writing was really awkward, and not just because of ending. That whole investigation of engie didnt mean shit, as they were ordered to come to the place anyway. A year passed, I am watching it again and I just realized that maybe that part where Spy asks Medic if he has a "cunning and subtle plan" is a Blackadder reference
Based on Rimmy's playthroughs I can safely say I enjoyed the little cameos, the game play looked good (though it's not my cup of tea personally, I live vicariously through others when they play Hotline Miami like games) heck even the story and character development was good... right up until the end where everything was just discarded. Quite literally, the ending seems like the sort of thing you'd make when you genuinely hate the project you worked on and just want to be done with it. Imagine if in the Witcher, Geralt, right at the end just suddenly was eaten by a dragon that swooped in at the very last second of the entire story and swallowed him alive then flies off. What a great way to conclude that story. How about Halo 3, what if Halo 3 ended with the rings going off and everyone and everything dying, no further back up plans just everyone died. Just think about any anticlimactic, nonsensical way of ending a game, apply that to a game with a good story and that's what the ending of this one felt like. That answer by the dev that Rimmy shows only twists the knife further because they either really didn't care or they thought that killing everyone in such an anticlimactic way was the pinnacle of depth of a story.

The ending had nothing to do with my decision to leave TF2 behind, nor with me being overworked with the game itself. I had it planned almost at the very beginning of development, because I knew that these characters couldn't survive. You can't kill so many people and expect to get out unharmed. That's what the game is about in that regard. Yes, these were interesting personalities with interesting relationships, but there was nowhere for them to go. Not after everything that went down. Furthermore, their job was done and they had to go, both in-universe and in the sense that the game was over.
