The Folksmen once opened for Spinal Tap at a concert, and the audience booed them. I wish I had been there for that.

True story. Guys mentioned it a few times. They forgot to announce there was an opening act so the audience was not ready for three old men playing acoustic folk instead of hard rock.

"They were still booing the Folksmen when we got onstage!"
Christopher Guest is a comedic genius - the ability of these three to improvise against each other like this is something I could never get tired of. Tap, Folksmen, or otherwise...
This was aired the same year that Spinal Tap was released. And almost 20 years before A Mighty Wind was released.

The three of them were also guests as Spinal Tap in May 1984. The Folksmen skit was broadcast in November 1984, when Michael McKean hosted - while Chris Guest and Harry Shearer were cast members.
Wait? They had the Folksman idea since the 80's? That's commitment!

The Folksmen opened the 87 Farm-Aid show. I mean, technically, they were asked to play during a sound check the night before the crowd arrived, but it was a magical moment for the 15 or so people who were there.
their humor is so subtle, i'll wake up thinking about one of their lines and want to see it again, it gets better each time you watch it.
I had Barrows as a professor at Swarthmore College in 1988.

I remember watching this rerun on Comedy Central when I was 10 or so, and I wasn't aware of folk music or the singers of it in the '60s, so most of this went over my head. But I later became a fan of Spinal Tap, and A Mighty Wind, and gradually gained more knowledge of American folk songs and the styles and cliches of their singers. I still say this performance is "dry" comedy, but love how subtle and dead-on accurate they maintain it!

@@matthewwelch4305 The beauty of Christopher Guest's mockumentaries is thatt you end up becoming quite invested in the subject matter and the characters as if you were watching a documentary and then one of the characters ends up saying something so bizarre or off-kilter that it catches you offf guard.

It was recorded so the audience reaction is to a video, not a live performance.
The best part of this, is the audience just can’t quite grasp what’s going on.

SCTV-level subtlety. No punchlines, just character.
How many peoples heads this went completely over. Just genius. And the fact they’re all actually playing the instruments makes it just more epic. Love it.

All three have musical chops, from my understanding. In Spinal Tap, one of the funniest moments was how Christopher Guest transcribed Boccarini's Tarantella for electric guitar. Folks who studied classical music were rolling in the aisles.
