If you don't manage to pierce the plate in the exact center of balance, you could probably "trim" that balance with that peanut butter.

Another good point.

Only thing different I would do is a cheap, thin, plastic place instead of paper, as they're even more slippery and can be reused indefinitely.

This may not be THE most effective trap, but it's certainly the most hilarious. Nice work!

I wonder if a heavy plate would be better or worse. More weight would make it feel more secure, and more likely to jump down, but the trap might not tip as well though. Might be fun to try as a comparison paper vs plastic vs ceramic. Paper is definitely easier to make. You would need an epoxy/drill to make the others.

I don't think a tiny mouse would affect a heavy plate as much. Plus you'd also have to epoxy the string on since it takes special drills to get through ceramics. Kind of defeats the purpose of an ultra basic mousetrap that is effective enough to use.

I fall just like that trying to ride an electric hover board 😅

All these advanced electric and mechanically sophisticated traps, and this one is just a a paper plate and some string. Lol

This one surprised me. Didn’t expect it to be that effective.

Wow never thought about that idea! The plate could also be hung from a ceiling or under a desk.

Paper plate just needs to be ever slightly wider diameter so it wobbles less and is a more tempting "sturdy" surface.

You are the best! Thanks for giving us these DIY traps, some of us are on tight budgets or just cant get to the store. The only mice I have caught this year are deer mice, but I don't have a live trap I will give this a try !

Mice don't seem to reason so well anyway. Seeing their buddy in a cage trap doesn't stop them from going in themself, for example. So I wonder if a tall bucket with peanut butter bottom and a ramp - but no plate - would work as well. That's testable, Shawn! (Sadly, I have no mice.)

Yeah. They arent too bright. Natures meatballs. Rats though, unless they were starving probably wouldnt fall for this one, especially if they saw their buddy go in. Its like the rodent difference between a lil monkey and a chimpanzee.

I was thinking of that but noticed that the mice in the video didn't escape. It might be because the plate interfered with their jump - or discouraged them from trying.

pretty much just drops his pet mice in the bucket lol

I've had little success with mouse traps of any kind. I've tried just about every mouse trap design there is along with many different baits. The issue isn't the mechanics. The issue is getting mice fooled enough by bait, or barring that, from stealing it without mechanical results.

I learned a lesson by mistake that a good way to get a mouse to trust a trap is to put food in it without setting it, that way they think it is safe, and when they come back, and this time the trap is set, they are caught. It could also be that they are finding more ideal food sources elsewhere, so you need to find these other food sources and remove it, then they will get desperate. You may need to give them time to forget about the traps. I find the ones I catch the most are the babies who has not learned about traps yet.
