    I remember there was some software on the Amiga that used the floppy drive for making sounds. But this ruined the drive for its normal purpose, so you can imagine, that it was hardly used. However, this means, that we DID try hard back then ;)

    they hated the unavoidable sounds mecahnical devices are prone to make - i bet any engineer would laugh in tears realizing these annoying sounds are just a perspective issue :D (this ginius makes music with them!^^ - ofc only works because it's recognitionable music and they still kinda suck as instruments, but it's astonishing non-the-less!)

    @@Aweoe And how exactly do you program a scanner to play a MIDI file? Vibrato is usually defined as an effect field on the note. So he actually had to program many effects like vibrato and the bends to send the correct instructions to the scanner. Still much more effort than "just downloading it".

  • @KuraIthys

    @KuraIthys

    Well, that's all a bit of a red herring at this level, considering that you a speaker is needed to convert electricity to sound, which works by vibrating a cone with a magnet (eg, that's a mechanical movement at the end) Floppy drives use stepper motors, but hard drives typically use voice coils (these are called voice coils because they're basically the same as what's inside a speaker/microphone) So... Yeah. It all gets really muddy at that level...

    It would certainly be a lot of work setting the seek/printer heads to play the right pitches and programming the interface to feed the right data to the hardware. But once you've done that you could basically just write the songs like you're doing them on TuxGuitar or something. In fact you probably could use TuxGuitar if you set it up to play MIDI files lol.

    I am not going to beg, but rather suggest doing an extended version of, at least, this song. I just can't stop listening to it and I would prefer listening for it on repeat. I might do that myself simply because I prefer your rendition even to the original (probably due to how synthetic and awesome it sounds).
