    Best time of our lives, the 80s. What a decade for newlyweds to begin a family. Now that my wife is with The Lord I treasure those years all the more. Fabulous, fabulous memories; she was absolutely my rock, and even when things weren't going all that great she was my refuge. No one knew what love meant like she did. Thanks for reminding me. That song is an audible meltdown, and abandoned person and vulnerability . You would have to be void of a heart and or a soul to not allow to fill you. What kind of song might actually even sound better if you close your eyes with me that’s a little bit difficult since I’m prone to crying a lot especially when trapped in my adoration of the 80s. I’m not a psycho. I’m just trying to make light of admittedly being trapped if not willingly residing in the 80s. Thank God a lot of my friends feel the same way. 🫶

    As a child in the 60's I didn't care for the selection until The first time I heard Black Sabbath. I am today a Metal on air personality. There are more than 230 sub-genre of Metal, I did not leave anything in the past that I want, except the music. PROGRESS is the spice of life. I come to these time tunnels and get a FIXX of the past, BUT that's just what it is, "the past." Tonight I will in one hour of air time lay down nothing but an auditory onslaught of the hardest metal from unsigned local bands that anyone has witnessed, but not so hard as to not be able to communicate at least in grunts and hand signals. Do any of you have the slightest inkling of a brain fart left to comprehend the hours of grueling, ear abuse one must endure becoming even slightly aware of the nuances of recognition in order to even realize 230 different base sound ideas of ONE "type" of music, METAL MUSIC. I can already see the replies, talking about understanding the words, the guitar is just a wall of noise, or how can anything that carries 240 BPM can't be called music. None of that matters when your mind is free to sponge every sound individually in all that noise. So I leave you all with this one thought. I bid Peace in YOUR life today for YOU and all those YOU care for and care about. MetalMaxx

    +Ed Maddox As a chiid in the 90's I didn't care for anything really, I was (and i'm) a pretty dull person but I always liked "that kind o' sound" I didn't even know what it was but it was harder than anything else and it got even harder when I learned what it was. You see, my Brother always had some Sabbath, Alice C and some 90's stuff I never cared about and he didn't like to share with his little brother because "that's lame" but he had this friend, an exchange student from Finland. this guy had some pretty neat albums with him. the first time we met I was playing Doom II...well sorta playing I was listening to the music like I usually did before I unleashed mayhem on those fucking demons. I didn't even notice this guy at first but then he said something like "why aren't you playing eh" and I told him I was listening to the music (Shawn's Got The Shotgun) and then he said "Oooh you like metal too?!" metal like guns I said and then he proceded to explain to me what it was...I had around 7 or 8 years at the time and I couldn't let go...I picked Drumming and broadened my musical tastes a bit at 14 or so. I remember this time when we had to play any song we liked. Naturally I picked War ensemble because I knew it by heart. after playing my teacher asked me why did I pick such a harsh, noisy and humorless song and I told him "Well you asked me to perform something I liked...I mean if you asked me to play something else i would have to do it by obligation pretty much like this uniforms we wear...This kind of music is liberating, energic or anything really but it is what I wanted to play because it makes me feel GOOD...Body and MInd and that something else we get when we do stuff we like...what you find polarizing I might find it pleasing but in the end if we close our eyes it all becomes senseless sound but sound with a meaning" Needless to say I was kinda high at the time of that test but yeah...he bought all that blabble that could only make sense to oneself but he did get what I meant and banned The hard stuff (not because of him but because of sound complaints and the like)...They were shit outta luck because I Fucking Love Buddy Rich.

    "It was about looking at your own life, not so much about amassing material things but about experiences that lend you to be blissful... The song was written from the point of view of the release you get when you have nothing left to lose. It’s sort of a meditation. It clears your head of all fears and panics and illusions and you get back to the basics, which is a Buddhist mantra, which I practiced back then, and which I still do. The idea of the song is how great it is to get back to zero." -Cy Cumin

    the early 80s people saw an eery, post-apocalyptic, sleek, monolithic vision of the future, so far ahead of its time that it never truly came to be. looking back now, its like a collective dream everyone had and were looking to express. this song/video really does a good job of encapsulating that otherworldly aesthetic.

Several songs come to mind.. of course the Fixx but also earlier Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Naked Eyes, Talk Talk, Heaven 17, Duran Duran.. Thomas Dolby "One of our Submarines".. layer upon layer of synths and effects creating this warm yet distant and dark feeling. Totally lost today!

When the fixx first came out I might've been leaving K-Town for all of you soldiers out there from the war, they might understand that a bit better. I had so much fun I didn't want return to the world. That was a place I'd luv to return to. Mad luv for the songwriter eventhough he may follow buddhist principles. I 'm certainly not a buddhist but I don't discriminate, got luv for everbody no matter what they follow.

    Indeed. 80s rock, Ronald Reagan, a secure career, loving wife and precious little kids, working and living where I'd dreamed of working and living, the 80s were a dream come true - really. Haven't experienced anything like it since. I grew up with 60s rock, which in terms of its output and the number of talented bands popping up literally everywhere was absolutely unmatched -- even though we could've done without all the tumult going on across the nation. While I can look back on the 70s and still pick out plenty of good songs from that decade, as a nation we were sorta lost and burned out, and so I considered most POP music in the 70s unimaginative. Thank God for progressive rock; that tided me over until the 80s, which as a magical decade for music and an "era of good feelings."

    Saved by Zero - Fixx frontman Cy Curnin reflected on its meaning "It was about looking at your own life, not so much about amassing material things but about experiences that lend you to be blissful... The song was written from the point of view of the release you get when you have nothing left to lose. It’s sort of a meditation. It clears your head of all fears and panics and illusions and you get back to the basics, which is a Buddhist mantra, which I practiced back then, and which I still do. The idea of the song is how great it is to get back to zero.

I think Joust, Asteroids, Missile Command, Pac Man, Bezerk all were played until I flipped the score so high that it would just restart to zero, but still be on the highest level of difficulty. So in a way, you can say that I was "Saved By Zero" because I would have been playing those games forever and wouldn't have taken the time to play outside. ;) If only the 80s could just be an infinite loop like those video games.....sigh

    The Fixx was underrated. The different sounds and their vocals/chorus were all hypnotizing. Nowadays, a few artists are incorporating more of the 80's sound /vibe into their music, which is a good thing. There are many great artists out today who have an outta-the-box artistic vision, but the 80's were clearly the best decade for pop diversity.

    Funny I remember in the 80s (born 1970) the 50+ crowd complaining that the music sucked and wished they could go back to the 60s/50's. Now I am 50+ and I dont think the new music sucks that bad LOL. Dirty Honey, Greta Van Fleet, The WKND, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran are all putting out some solid music. Some of it is retro but heck Tainted Love was a retro motown song. I think the decade that you went to high school is the decade that resonates strongest with you when you get old....

    People who get this song sometimes cry when they hear it... If she said yes it was the best day of your life, if you got rejected you had to accept it and eventually move on. Digital experience isn't much different than fantasy fiction. It was a completely different world back then. I remember a lot of it clearly . So different that as time went by a couple decades we mostly forget how we go about life so differently today. I remember when the beeper came along i thought it was the most amazing new thing ever, and i guess it was then. Not a person under 40 today knows what a beeper even is.

    There is loads of good music around, always has been, I've always looked towards the underground (not as hard as it sounds) for music. I don't mind if other people are ok with listening to crap, just like I don't mind people eating at McDonalds. OK the in 80's the was a prevalent style in the 80's which you found agreeable and meant you could let the radio soundtrack your life, but their are many artists influenced by this era today which have a clever tasteful take on it.

  • @tarmaque

    @tarmaque

    Agreed, there's always good music around. I think it's just that the pop music of today is so terrible. If you look beyond the hype into the indi scene you can find all sorts of stuff. Some musicians actually specialize in music of the style of the 70's 80's or 90's and are very good at evoking those eras. It's just that the kids these days don't even try to find them.

    It's a if there's a somebody forcing other people to listen to music they don't like, some prescribed playlist (ie old media radio, TV etc... when it's never been so easy to listen to music you like or might like, all they need do is "scrobble" on lastfm or Spotify, something new based on your taste will come along soon enough.

    Lyrically, "Saved by Zero" is a reference to the Buddhist mantra Śūnyatā. Fixx frontman Cy Curnin reflected on its meaning in a 2008 interview: "It was about looking at your own life, not so much about amassing material things but about experiences that lend you to be blissful... The song was written from the point of view of the release you get when you have nothing left to lose. It’s sort of a meditation. It clears your head of all fears and panics and illusions and you get back to the basics, which is a Buddhist mantra, which I practiced back then, and which I still do. The idea of the song is how great it is to get back to zero." 💥💥💥💥💥
