The Fixers Using Recycled Laptop Batteries to Power Their Homes

Ғылым және технология

The rechargeable batteries in your laptop, your cell phone, your headphones: all of these can be used to power your life and take you off the grid. DIY Powerwalls - rechargeable lithium-ion battery installations, made from recycled batteries - are the future of power, whether you know it or not.
We visited Jehu Garcia, a DIY Powerwall builder and enthusiast, and the folks at EV West in Southern California as well as the University of Michigan Battery Lab to see just how DIY Powerwalls can power your home, your car, and even the rest of your neighborhood.

You should buy a fume extractor. They are not much money. $50-100 or so. The extractor moves fumes away from you so you don't breathe them in, but the active carbon actually removes the VOC's from the soldering process.

Ironically, as people generate more of their own power, utility companies will be forced to raise their prices to maintain a profit. People who cannot generate their own electricity because of location or investment costs will lose out.

Sad but true, however, think in this way. Imagine you are part of the people that will lose out. for how long you going to be 'lose out'? forever? not in logical sense right. Somehow this shifting process will eventually force out people to be aware and take action. But most importantly they learn a bit or two on how to self sustain. That's the ultimate picture.

Those didn't come out of any freaking laptop and they wouldn't power a home unless you're home consists of Two 40 watt light bulbs and a tablet to charge up.

if their power is out? If there was a natural disaster where the station is/was? You only have to partition your electric into primary and secondary. Use the secondary til you wake up in your hotel room and your primary is restored.

Charge at home, fully charge when you wake up. People don't even fully use up the EV batteries energy by the end of the day, sitting inside and using an electric car long enough that it would run out of energy isn't healthy. I don't even go anywhere beyond 1km of my house.

I came here _from_ Jehu Garcia's video on making solar/battery power supplies for Puerto Rico. That idea has potential, providing that enough volunteers to supply the parts can be found, and that the completed devices, which will be made on that island, can be shipped efficiently to those that need them.

  • @heinzkunz5975

The production of electric energy is harmful to the environment. No way around that. So called renewable energy production harms the environment in different ways then say coal gas or oil. Experience gained in the last few decades suggests that solar energy is least harmfull, since the lifecycle of cells seems to be way above the 25-30 years stated by manufacturers. When talking about batteries the answer can only be. It depends. Which kind do you mean. I'm assuming Li-Ion, which is one of the most harmful types of batteries. Production plus recycling uses a lot of power and is, when looking at the not so long lifecycle of a battery, not a very efficient use of energy. Cars that use batteries to store energy, which don't use at least 90% renewable energy to recharge and are not being driven a certain mileage every day are actually more harmfull to the environment then using a car that runs on gas. Always remember, car batteries have to be replaced at least every 5 years. Batteries in cars also pose a high security risk. As long as there are only a few percent of those on the street, risks at an accident aren't very high, but when every car uses them and there is an accident involving lots of cars and some catch fire, the situation can turn really ugly really fast. Batteries in cars is just a short term solution, one might even call it a fad. We can only hope that fuel cells become mass market ready soon.
