Fantastic show guys. Always enjoyed Tom's work with DHP in MFM& PFM. I think that Tom is the guy that the Angling Trust needs at the Top to address the points he made. Just look at his Diawa pfmasters from its inception. That was a big game changer for me. Thanks Matt, & Guru for this great podcast. Slide On brother

The problem is that professional sports are generally driven by spectators who are in essence a sponsors market place it's always going to be difficult to have live events and get interest from outside angling because of the nature of the sport..I totally agree with Tom that now a massive amount of effort and expense has little or no reward in the big events .great podcast fellas.

The point about the Angling Trust needing show leadership [in match fishing] is a topic that could fill a whole podcast by itself. Broadly speaking, the governing body does not have the resources or the membership levels that perhaps we would like it to have. Therefore it looks to the government for funding in some form or another, including taking on some of the Environment Agency's work.

Sport England specify where their funding has to be utilised and so we have the ridiculous situation where our international teams are part sponsored and have to pay out of their own pocket the difference and this may also entail taking extended leave if employed or not getting monies in if self employed. Yes there is prestige in winning medals but little or no financial reward. I do think that the Angling Trust should employ specialists to film and transmit some of the England team in action and results (including Ladies) by way of news to BBC, ITN and Sky as one way of raising the profile of the sport. OK, coverage won't be to the level of the Lionesses but we must try. Sadly many local rags have disappeared and the national media no longer carry angling columns. This has got to change as written media will remain for quite a while yet., I fear it would take an extraordinary revolution in social media to raise the sport's profile. There appears to be no suitable international venue in England - many will remember the farces at the Warwickshire Avon and Holme Pierrepont, though the latter or a similar water if run by anglers could be a suitable place. However it would cost a lot of money constructing it to meet requirements and you would need the backing of a huge organisation or indeed a country of dubious values. Turning to the big Commercial events, are they not funded mostly by the angler paying entry fees with projected payouts being dependent on full entries? Should there be dedicated match angler's governing body? I believe there was a relatively short-lived organisation and probably would fail as it wouldn't be recognised by Sport England - unless funded to a fantastic level by outsiders. By the way, please check out the Angling Trust accounts (and even the NFA before them) the cost of running the Nationals, they had to cover admin costs and expenses but they do so diligently and fairly.

Tom - with regards to having a greater focus on “getting the best from your peg” and removing what Matt said about “best angler in the world aint gonna win from that peg..” I think the solution is an easy one and based on a mathematical formula (bear with me lol). If each peg was graded, based on historical weighs and match results, you could then theoretically apply weight handicaps to pegs. The flier may have a handicap of 50lb so in theory you start that peg on -50lb and thus the shit peg is now statically on par. Its hard to get the % bang on as fish move etc BUT its not beyond the wit of man.

I think natural venue matches will just deteriorate. What young angler wants to fish a big res and get no recognition when they can go catch f1s at partridge and get so much more recognition for it.

Fully agree that event organisers should take some money. Back in the day clubs made money by taking £1 "pegging fee" for running matches on the "free" Lower Thames and it was made clear by way of a balance sheet. Even so people moaned!

48:12..yes you can because theres so much that is free of charge on here that people will just find a video that is free of charge..lets face it ,its not that important watching fishing videos and its been an overkill ..too many of the bloody things on here...for the match angler, the only thing that really matters is getting out on the bank and fishing..
