Asian glow technically isn't considered an "allergy." When we think of the prototypical allergic reaction, it's a Type I hypersensitivity reaction that causes the release of a ton of histamine (and other stuff) that causes hives, swelling, etc. With Asian glow, it's from the build-up of acetaldehyde, a byproduct of ethanol (due to people making it too fast and/or not breaking it down fast enough). People probably take Pepcid before drinking to reduce Asian glow because it's an antihistamine (H2 blocker), which supposedly slows down the enzyme responsible for breaking down ethanol (alcohol dehydrogenase, which is overactive in like 80% of East Asians). If you do this, just be wary that you're probably drunker than you realize, because your blood alcohol concentration can be raised by as much as 30%+ than if you didn't take Pepcid or Zantac.

OMG!!! Thank you guys for making this Lunch Break episode!!! This was such a fun episode to listen to, mainly because I'm an aspiring mixologist and bartender, so this topic goes into my passion! When I was in college, I didn't drink as much because I felt I didn't need alcohol to have fun. Life happened and I played a video game that inspired me to start mixing drinks at home! I started attending classes on bartending, reading books on cocktail history, and watching loads of videos. 7 years later, I now own too many bottles of alcohol at home, that I use to host parties for friends, inviting them all to try my new creations from time to time. I hope to one day continue this trend and maybe mix for you guys :) Thank you Wongfu, been a fan since your Yellow Fever days!!! I always look forward to your videos.

Same, Jenn. I just turned 30 and I've only ever had a few sips of alcohol in my life, mostly because, to me, it smells and tastes absolutely *terrible*. In college most of what I saw were kids going crazy and making bad decisions, rather than consuming responsibly. That loss of control freaked me out enough (especially as I'm the size of an average 13yo girl) that I never tried to get over the bad taste. lol

I think it's cool that folks like Jen are fine and fun without drinking; personally there's always a time and place (e.g. if you're at a party and want to be a little more relaxed it's not a bad idea, and if you're unable to chill then it's good to enjoy the good times once in awhile). Anyone else agree?

  • @Chaosflyex98

I'm with you, Jen. I had my first legal drink when I turned 21, which was a Moscow Mule. It wasn't bad, and I wasn't peer-pressured to drink on my birthday. But since that day, I've found that I have a really tolerance. I just end up with a splitting headache and a horrible, empty feeling in my stomach...all by the time I've finished half of my drink. Oh, and I basically barfed up my entire dinner after ONE drink that night. So yeah. Vowed never to drink after that day lol I find that I can enjoy life without having to drink alcohol, and I'm honestly okay with that!

In Belgium, legal drinking age for "soft" alcohol (beer) is 16. Stronger alcohol is permitted at 18. It's very cultural because Belgium has a very strong beer culture (over a 1000 different beers for such a small country !). We have a phrase that says not to drink beer after wine, but you can drink wine after beer. We also say try not to mix too much, but if you do (you know you will!) you have to climb up in alcohol degrees ;-)

Jen! You’re not alone. I used get the same flaming feeling on my face as you described and also I would get rashes along my neck, chest, and thighs. Champagne produces the worst conditions for me. I used to get judged and questioned a lot for not drinking, but am glad that that has died down as people are beginning to realize that you don’t have to drink to have a good time. Occasionally I do still get questioned and judged but you learn to ignore it since there’s no point to associate with a person who tries to make another person feel embarrassed/bad. Being the sober friend has actually saved my friends from unwanted encounters/attention/etc. Also, I’m really glad Phil brought up the fact that he asks all his friends regardless of gender whether or not they made it home, because you can be attacked(not just sexually!) no matter your gender, size or appearance.

Going on 30 and never had alcohol. And I plan to keep it that way. What's interesting too is that my local laws used to have the drinking age at 18 but then they raised it to 21. So for my peers, we reached the age to legally drink then had it taken away for a year or two for when we had to wait to turn 21 to legally drink again. Haha. It didn't bother me because I didn't drink, but it's always funny recalling this.

Totally get what Jenn is saying. I do drink but, I always know my limit. It's best to get to a level where you enjoy your night. In my instance, when I start getting giddy, smiley, and clingy. haha I feel this responsibility to take care of people. I'm also too conscious of myself to entirely let myself lose control as a strong fear of mine is regretting something I've done; something that can never be taken back.

Alcohol makes me sleepy so I often limit myself to one cocktail on night outs. It gets annoying when people are like “just have one more!”. My intake is not stopping your please. I’ve pushed my limit 3 different times and the hangovers and puking were real! Those special occasions were worth it though.

I've never been drunk; warm and fuzzy only. I also appear to like dancing more. I don't see the appeal of drinking to that point. I also usually don't feel safe enough to do so. The chill atmosphere Jen described is ideal. I mostly dodged via me genuinely not liking the taste of most alcohol, especially beer (which is usually the easiest to get, especially in college). I like super sweet drinks. I guess my taste buds must be warped also, since even drinks that others see as sweet don't taste sweet to me. So it usually comes down to mixed drinks. Ah, I don't mind peach soju and some drink that had cranberry and vodka though. Sangria with a TON of fruit is okay too. I also never forgot the advice from an upperclassman in college: for every drink, have a cup of water in between. ....but then my bladder kicks in and usually the constant need to pee ended the night for me lol.

One thing I found interesting was drinking culture in Asia vs North America. One example: I remember seeing video clips of baseball fans in Korea having a chug-off sponsored by the alcohol companies and allowed by the professional baseball teams in-between innings during a game. Meanwhile at baseball games in Toronto a fan who pledges to be a designated driver get rewarded in a random draw.

I did an experiment with various types of wine to see whether I would like them and determined that I would be able to tolerate drinking but I do not really enjoy it. Like Jen, I do not drink.
