I think Chuck gave the best piece of advice relevant to any time: Meet people and make friendly connections.
A great musician and a true southern gentleman.
One of the pieces of advice that still applies is that it is first and foremost important that you get satisfaction from what making music means to yourself. The question is whether you achieve external (lasting) success and appreciation, while the personal satisfaction can be of lasting value. This of course also applies to other creative expressions.
