One of my favourite things about the show is how Luffy doesn't care who you are as long as you do what you want to do. Like with Nami, Luffy wants to know if Nami wants to be part of the fish gang. What is important to him isn't that she does what he wants but does what she wants to do. It's taking the idea, "Follow your dreams," to its logical conclusion. The first guy Luffy meets wants to become a marine. An enemy of pirates. But Luffy doesn't care. All that matters is that becoming a marine is his dream. Which is honestly such a good lesson and understanding of the idea. Great video as always.

Very good point. That's what you'd call a true leader, for leadership imposed, it's earned. And acting in the interest of those you would like to lead is how you get them to follow you.

@@CynicalWarlock exactly. It's why Luffy is such a great captain and character. He doesn't want to force anyone to be who he wants them to be. He just them to be who they want to be.

Hehe, I had a blast watching your vid - really made me laugh a few times and obvs, really appreciate the analysis of the characters, plot, music and the adaptation question. I'm now actually pretty keen to see it and will use your vid to sell it to my two One Piece anime fan kids. Together, they've been watching it forever on the bus to school but have recently stalled because they have new friends on the morning bus. The 15 y/o saw a trailer but was not so keen to watch because "it seems like Cosplay". I reckon there quite a bit to the show though, snd will try to give it a go - your recommendations haven't failed me yet! As usual, thanks for you excellent vid Cynical. I'm currently watching the HBO miniseries 'Chernobyl' with kid 2 and 3, so this would be quite the change of pace...

Wow, Chernobyl's pretty heavy. Definitely a change of pace - from radioactive disaster to radioactive hairstyles. It definitely is 'cosplay'. Curious if the kiddies will like it. With established One Piece fans, I feel like it can swing either way: they'll either love seeing the characters and scenes coming to life, and appreciate all the nods and references.. or the very idea of live-action anime will offend them.

Huh, I never would've thought a live-action adaptation of something could ever be anything more than a pile of crap. I'm like you where I've never dared to get into the OG One Piece, cause I ain't reading ALL THAT, and I'm not a huge manga/anime fan anyways. But if this makes it bite sized, digestible and isn't a bad show... I may have to give it a watch.

  • @CynicalWarlock

It's very bite-sized, and the pacing doesn't drag much at all. It's the rare case where they tried to make an enjoyable show first, a love letter to the manga fans second, and a piece of woke garbage never.

My tiny (big) problem with this show that made me not being able to watch it: the costumes. Some shirts looked like straight up bought at H&M. Might be close to the anime, but since I was never interested in watching it, this detail really threw me off big time. I think costumes are the worst I‘ve ever seen in any adaptation. So, I cannot comment on the rest of the show so far. Might give it another go some bored afternoon based on your great video.

H&M terrible. Balenciaga better. I didn't know you had such a keen sense of fashion. That is a very.. specific reason to not watch something, but I have my own quirks, so I'm not one to judge. Some of the costumes do look kind of Netflix-y, I suppose.

@@silentrocco I know what you mean. It's standard TV show production values. Although I suspect part of it is also just the style of the manga, itself. Lotta characters seem to wear a hodgepodge of modern and vintage clothing.

By the way, this didn't fly with the kids. They watch anime in Japanese with English subtitles and even though there is a Japanese dub of the live action One-piece they were not interested in this due to both the "seems like cosplay" aspect and the fact that they're only on episode 1,000 and didn't want to potentially spoil any plot points.

*Only* 1000 episodes, huh? That part is probably fine - as I understand it, the show adapts the first 50 or so episodes? But I get their argument, especially if they're part of the "sub-only" community.

this is the 3rd video i watch (in a row) your channel seems to be amazing. and too good for so short views. and about the show... for me is away better than the anime. cause it has the same good characther presentation and development, and none of the drag and terrible pacing of east blue saga. the anime gets better after this point tho. that little boy you said it might be zeff is actually smoker. one of the antagonist of second season when it comes out.

Oh ok, thanks for clearing that up. Think you're the only person I've met, thus far, who prefers the show to the anime, for the reason I suspected - anime just has too much to slog through. In a weird way, this might be the optimal way to watch One Piece - start with the show, get up to speed on the main characters and events, then transition to the anime. Glad you're enjoying the videos. Nice to know they have 'binge' potential.

@@CynicalWarlock yeah... People are too much nostalgical. Its like a deadly sin to say you like something new more than something old. But if stop to think, there is nothing better in the anime. The anime has a terrible pace. Shitty graphics...(dragon ball is older, and still way better) and what the anime does great, the series does too. The only thing we lost is a characther called hachi, that is kinda important in the future, and he was cut out of budget...cause he is a walking octopus.

@@Mundo_do_Ray It is tough for a long-running show like One Piece and Naruto to keep up the quality, because of animation time, having to wait for the manga, things like that, so I feel them, in that regard. That said, I'm sure Netflix One Piece made plenty of people curious to take the anime out for a spin.
