We have an 8 year old tiny dog who has been rehomed. She is very fearful of everything! She lived with 4 other small dominant dogs in her prior home. She seems to have no dog skills. She does not know how to play. She is not food motivated. She has been with us for a week. She is not housetrained. How can we help this? Poor little dog?

So many of us trying to do the right thing by "adopting not shopping", only to inherit a "problem child". Wishing success to all.

I've owned dogs for over 30 years and have 4 right now: two German Shepherds, two Boston Terriers. I've gone the champion breeder route and the rescue route. Shelter / rescue is not for everyone, and people severely underestimate what is involved in a shelter dog. Right now, one of my Shepherds, now 18 months old, I purchased at him 9 mons, from an owner who was in over his head. Turns out I became the 4th owner in 7 months. Why? Because three people were in over their heads, with the breed, and with all the work and time a dog takes. I wish you patience, and lots of it, because when you finally establish that bond and train the problem child, you will have a friend for life.

I work with kids as well and I was just thinking "i do very similar things with toddlers I work with" re: name training lol..... I mean we ARE all mammals.....I only play my favorite podcasts when I clean so now I get excited to clean. Its all 'training' :)

they are the smartest dog, but you have to train to phase out the heel nipping. I have a border collie/ blue heeler mix and it was easy after THAT phase.

Smartest?? These dogs are bred to work and hence are very agile and willing to follow commands. I DO NOT think working dogs are smart. They are just more trainable if you start training them at a very young age to do some routines that are natural to and inherent in their genes. But they are severely fear aggressive, hyperactive, hypersensitive, ... When it comes to more complex situations, relations, cause and effects, these working dogs really are NOT smart. My old mix dog is smarter than my newly adopted Australian shepherd.

The part about walking away from your dog instead of chasing them is so true, when I was a kid the only way our family dog would come back to me over a long distance was if I started running away. Even if she was ignoring my calls, she was still watching me enough to see if I was leaving 😅

I so needed this! I've just adopted a dog from Romania and he's never had a home before, so it's hard to know how to train him.

This video is great!! I got a rescue senior dog couple of days ago and he's such quick learner. He has very minimal training. its been about 48 hours, and unless I say "YES!"-- he wont eat. He sits before I can even say "yes!". He learned "stay, wait, come, sit, outside, no-no, ok c'mon!". He caught on his new name within 3 hours. I've now transitioned to calling his name, and saying "yes good boy!" without a treat. And he loves the attention nonetheless. Right now, he wont even take a treat from my open hand, unless I say "yes good boy!!". Your videos have been super informative and I'm a first time dog-owner!

They learn fast, but they are so high energy and clever that training can be difficult to initiate. We rescued an adult lab collie mix and it took weeks to get her to sit or do anything still, but 30 seconds to jump over obsitcals. She is also capable of endless games of fetch

Excellent, clear video! I often dog-sit, and occasionally foster short-term. Your tips on getting a new, unknown dog to focus on you are very helpful. I've found this video because I'm due to get a new foster dog who may be pretty untrained. It's easy to forget that our own dog's obedience was established over many hours of patient training, and expect new dogs to arrive automatically being as obedient. Nope!

I just adopted a dog from a shelter. He's smart as a whip...I think he's a runner. He's 65lbs. When in the yard he pushes his body against the fence. I think he was looking for weakness in the fence. When his mind is made up about something, he refuses treats. Yesterday, he rolled his back on the ground until the leash unclaimed from the harness Today he tried it again but I knew what he was doing. At this point we are playing a waiting game. If I'm not going in the direction he wants, he just sits. I think I need a longer collar.

"if I'm not going in the direction he wants..." This is something I'm dealing with with my 5 year old female GSD (shelter rescue), that I've had for 3 months now. Because she was/is fearful, I thought that she saw something that concerned her. At times, I know when it's something she's concerned about, but I now know that she's also blowing me off. I structure the walk, she doesn't get to explore until I say so. Her stopping, is her way of saying "no, I want to do this". Clearly you can't just drag the dog, but you also can't let them tell you what to do. So yes, it's a waiting game. I stay calm. I try going in another direction, and return to the direction I want to go in. Sometimes it works, but sometimes it takes quite a few repetitions (and a lot of deep breaths). If I do get her going, she is still pretty much dragging her feet. When she's scared, I don't keep constant pressure on the leash. I kind of use the same "pressure and release" that you would use with horses. Pressure, takes a step, immediately release the pressure...rinse, and repeat. There are a lot of other issues with my rescue, and for me personally, especially because of her breed, I may be in over my head, and will be consulting a trainer soon. Bottom line, the stopping thing is that they are testing us, blowing us off, etc.

I got my dog when I was 14. She was a puppy, but I had no idea how to train a dog and my parents didn't help me. So my dog is kind of wild, she sits and stays. But that's it, and she can't be outside off a leash because she runs. She's six now and I'm hoping I can help her by training her.

The kibble and the bed activity is great. I could see the dog thinking about what he should do!

I have a white and tan Border Collie who I have trained. I have looked at many training videos and disagree with most. I was so surprised and glad to find yours, I've trained my dog exactly in most of these ways and have always made everything as fun and positive as I can. I'm currently training her for Brace and Mobility.

A few months ago I adopted a 1/2 Retriever & 1/2 Australian shepherd, a Liver /Red Merle about 10 months old then. I'd seen a rehoming ad for him and then 3 days later he'd been dumped on a busy highway.... He had the good sense to hide in a large culvert which saved his life from the traffic.... After all that he trusted me enough to come to me, but yelped when I reached to pet him. I named him Remmington, and he will never be homeless again.

Thanks for this! I'm bringing home a 5 yr old Weimaraner tomorrow who was initially house trained, but has been living outside for the last 4 years on a farm. He had a nice outdoor shelter and another dog for company, and was well cared for. But now he'll have to get re-adjusted to living inside a house with humans, and not always having free run. It's been a long time since I trained my first Weimaraner, so I'm trying to refresh my memory, as well as pick up some tips on training an adult dog vs. a puppy. This is a great place to start. I especially loved the suggestion to train him to respond to his name, and getting hold of the collar. Excellent and very simple basic starting point.

I'm completely wheelchair bound and I want to train my dogs. What training techniques would you recommend for me?

Teach to help retrieve objects dropped or to pull a wheelchair or to brace to help u transfer from the bed to the chair these are service dog task

Look up service dog training around wheel chairs. Dogs and wheelchairs are there! Those dogs are suppose to be very attentive to you and what’s around them so the training is solid and useful even if that’s not the purpose of your dog.

id honestly take him to service dog training. they can open the fridge, open doors and make your life alot easier.

What would you say is the difference between a wait, stay, and emergency stop? Could you use one command for all? Or do you think there is a benefit to having different commands with slightly different meanings?

What a good video! We adopted a 1-year-old girl from a shelter, she needs all of these basics. We'll begin today.

"25' line. We gotta get one!" said my wife with great urgency. We don't have a dog, or ANY pet! I've been trying to convince her to get a dog, for about a year. She never had a dog, or a pet as a child. I'm still hopeful. UPDATE: We got an adult dog (miniature pinscher/chihuahua) AND it came with a 16' retractable leash!! Trained, quiet yet alert and perfect. 😆

I'm getting a year old GSD next week, my first time taking in an adult dog. I'm a bit nervous.

I like the video. Most dog training videos or tips I found were about training a new puppy or emphasize that training since they are still puppies are the best way to train without even mention about training adult/rescued/re-home dogs. This video hit the right spot on the most important part; to not emphasize just "training had to start since they are puppies". I do believe (and have seen) that there are some people give an excuse of not training their dog because "their dog is no longer a puppy" when they adopt a dog instead of bying them or simply didn't train them since they were puppies (either don't know how to train/don't even bother/ just believe they are dogs they will know; it is in their blood - the last one is kind of bad but I had met and live with someone who believe that. The experience was not fun. Lucikly they were tiny dogs so the major damange was barking excessively - we have a yard for them to go outside and pee) until they are adult. When their bad behavior remained, they said it is too late to train. Keep up with this kind of videos. I think it will encourage people to adopt more adult/rescued/re-home dogs and reassure them that those adult/rescued/re-home dogs are trainable and can be their good pets/companions just like the one they buy since they are puppies. Some people would just buy them believing that it is the only way to get a trainable dog (especially a new owner who does some reasearch about dog training - maybe they haven't done enough or maybe it is really difficult to find any dog training tips that focus on not-trained-since-puppy). Admittedly I was once thought that too, except I haven't buy any at the moment of writing this comment.

Good luck. You got this. Remember, sometimes you need to provide open and gentle love. Other times, you need to be a bit tougher on them. Through and through, know that communication is key. Be their leader, teach them to trust in you, and learn to listen. I'm going through this journey as well, but i just wanted to share with a first time owner. Again, good luck. You got this.

Please do not take advice from these people there methods are well and truly outdated reward based training teaches your dog nothing they won't listen with out it a clicker is far better method and positive reinforcement that all the worlds best trainers use do you see ceaser cramming treats down a dogs throat do you see doggy Dan doing this no and why because they know how to train dogs properly

I Am about to adopt a 1 yr old Beagle mix puppy who has been rehomed a couple times due to excessive barking. his current people dont want him, and I want to take over and give him the life he really deserves because his caregiver (who happens to be a Vet student and is the one that truly know him) Told me he is a really sweet dog and I believe her. This is my first time adopting a dog on my own, and I just subbed to the channel because I feel like I am going to need a lot of help with him but I am sure that with some love, patience and practice, he will become the greatest dog that those people really wish they had!.

We are going to bring home our first dog is a few weeks, he’s a challenge but the shelter thinks that we are ready for him. Hes a dog whos rescued from a horrible breeder who had all of his dogs locked op, with dirty water, kennels and food. He is a super sweet dog, but he is scared of a lot of things. Sudden movements or noises are scary and the whole outside world is extremely scary. We now are going to the shelter to visit him once or twice a week so we can bond and train with him before bringing him home. The trainers and behavior therapist there are amazing and helping our so much.

I have 2 questions and would appreciate your answer. 1. Dog is still engaging only when our other dog is around, not when its just 2 of us. Will that change over time or should i stop using other dog for engagement? 2. After i train these excersises should continue with our walk or should this be only training time and after the training when i call him this way should i always reward him with treats or verbal and touch reward are enough? Adopted a GSD and she’s got great training - but there’s a lot to do to make her a solid dog. I have had her less than a day - so I’m in the decompression stages

We rescued a 2 year old husky/Shepard/lab mix 7 months ago. He is a beautiful and loving dog. We are having lots of success with our training. One thing I cannot find any info on is that he will not do his business in our yard, which is large. Even though he shows us that he needs to go out, it usually takes 20 minutes of walking before he urinates and more like 45 minutes for the other. Sometimes we need him to do his business quickly. Occasionally he has done his business in our basement in the middle of the night even though we had a long walk around 8pm. We trained our previous family dog from a pup and taught him to 'get busy' to do his business. Any tips?

I just adopted a fearful dog, 6 years as a breeder. She is a medium size dog and when I want her to go outside to go to the bathroom, I have had to pick her up and carry her outside. I hope I can get her to get up and walk after me. I need help. I've been picking her up and carrying her everywhere, whether I want her to move from one room to the next or outside.
