That did look like it might have been a double bass but that style is more commonly played on the tololoche which is slightly smaller than the English double bass. The real kick is it the tololoche uses fat nylon Spanish strings that make the tone a little softer and the slap a little harder. Definitely KZread tololoche. If you liked the bad here you will love tololoche.

@@Helgrimr nobody started a race war but you since I didn't say anything depicting about any other race, but here you come to the rescue for white/western culture when nobody said anything bad about it. I just stated my opinion, and Im not even black, Im a latino with european heritage too.

Thank you for saying this. Many of us have been announcing this, but some people try to shut us up or say it's a lie. I have been echoing your sentiments, especially whenever I see discrimination against Black artists. You're a real one. Stay blessed.

when will people stop categorizing others as black, white, latino or whatever? god thats so dumb...
I've loved this song for years, but didn't know it was the first song that introduced slapping. Such a cool thing to learn
Love that double bass slap sound no cap

That did look like it might have been a double bass but that style is more commonly played on the tololoche which is slightly smaller than the English double bass. The real kick is it the tololoche uses fat nylon Spanish strings that make the tone a little softer and the slap a little harder. Definitely KZread tololoche. If you liked the bad here you will love tololoche.

And another pioneer of music which many have no idea of whom they are copying. From Sly and the Family Stone to Graham Central Station.Larry Graham forever
You have very clean technique with your fingers, thumb, a pick, and while your slapping! Much respect from my end!

I love that song, I didn’t know it was the first slap bass, not only the first but one of the best, definitely the funkiest!

Larry Graham, such a talented musician. His bass chops and feel are stunning and he also has a great singing voice.
My inner Primus comes out anytime I hear slap bass
I still don’t understand one thing guys: Is the slap bass technique literally just hitting the strings with your thumb?
@fortuneosho8137

Yes basically having a slap fight with your string

Kinda, for your thumb you move your wrist to where your thumb hits through the string and you pluck with your fingers

You make it sound as though upright basses are extinct.
Larry’s thumb goes through the string, he doesn’t “slap” - he “thumps”- his own words
There is an 80's video of Larry doing a tutorial, called something like "Right Hand Slap Bass Technique". Man, I can watch the first 30 seconds of that over and over! Cool stuff...true pioneer!
Graham's wasn't the first. However as a style, he popularized the technique so he truly deserves the title of the pioneer of slap bass.

Graham was one of the greats. I saw him with his band Graham Central Station in '75 at the Crater Festival in Honolulu. He also pioneered the use of the voice box while he was with Sly and the Family Stone.
