The First Mosins, M91 & M24 - Rifles Of Finland Part I

Ғылым және технология

Finally, we begin our multi-part series looking at Finnish military issue rifles. And we hope you like Mosins, because these videos are going to have a lot of them!
In episode #1, we begin at the beginning with the very first long arms issued by the Army and Suojeluskunta (aka Civil Guard).
Featured is an original/unaltered Russian M1891, a Civil Guard rebarreld M91/24 (or just M24), and a completely Finn reworked M91.

I've got a M91/30 that the Finnish captured and stamped with 'SA', fitted with a thicker arctic burch stock.

I own a Finnish moisin 91 rework...made originally by new England Westinghouse in 1916...complete with the flaming bomb proof....i paid 100.00 bucks for it. About 25 years ago...great shooter! I love it!

@Ozark Bear Arms I picked up a Finn matched 91/24 last year at a yard sale for $100 stock was almost non existent so I threw it into a spare Mosin stock. The barrel and receiver are original Tula manufacture from 1925 Counter bored to about in front of the front sight. Funny thing too is this one is a pre 1968 import due to the lack of importer info on it. The remnant of the stock still has the brass shims in it too.

Great video, as always. The only Mosin I have is a M44 that, by the looks, saw little use. It's fun to shoot but beats the shoulder all to hell.

Thanks much for watching. Personally, my favorite Russian Mosin is the M38. Favorite Finn? I have a weird soft spot for the M27, even though I know it isn't that great of a rifle.

Hi Mishaco, Thank you for all of your time and effort that you put into your videos. Quick question about AK's. What are the differences between the Russian SGL 21 and the Bulgarian SLR 107? Other than their country of origin and that many SLR 107's are side folders, I can't seem to find any differences. Is there much difference in quality? I know that both are highly thought of by knowledgeable AK people. Thanks again!

As always, great review. A question Mishaco. When you get around to the last produced M39's, could you help explain the rifles stamped PVS (1970) and a AV1 1968? Whats up with these guys. They came with tags stating "Target". They are just beautiful and unfired. Thanks.

Sure but not a long story there. While the Valmet RK62 was adopted in 1962, it didn't actually go into full production until 1965. This meant that the FDF was still using the M/39 in some units into the early 1970s. When the RK62 was being phased in, they built up a final run of M/39s at AV1 using leftover barrels and other parts. Most (all?) were used for target/competition shooting, if that is they were used at all.

@@ozarkbeararms8840 We had a "leftover" 1973 model M39 in the Air Force in early 1980s among those the we could disassemble (all we did with them). I don't think the late arrivals were treated anything special, they were just thrown in with the rest that were repaired as per the arsenal routine.

M39, but buy fast. They're getting really expensive so buy one before they're too expensive. I got one a few years for a decent price. I don't shoot it a lot, but think of it like an investment. :) Edit: Whatever Misha says is the right answer. He knows way more than you or I could ever. ;)

I think most would say the M39 is the all-around best. However, the M28/30 is possibly a tad more accurate.

Hey misha , just an update I did pick up my first 5.45 ak! I picked up a Wasr 2. Came with 4 30 round izzy bakes. 4 all black izzy 30s, 2 45 round rpk bakes and 2 circle 10 mags. I would love to convert it to look more like a aims74 but dont really want to but a 600 dollar parts kit to do so. Do you know anywhere I can find the 22mm fsb and muzzle brake? Also sadly the gas tube locking lever was snapped but I can fix that

Adam Arens Why would a collector want a new made model when the original guns are some of the most plentiful rifles on the planet?

  • @adamarens3520

SimplyMadness that’s a fair question. I have often thought about a mosin nagant made from modern materials and manufacturing. I think In the case of the mosin, supply has created demand and everyone can’t get the best mosins made. I realize it would be expensive to offer a new production mosin but there is a large market. Think of all the after market stuff people do with mosins and even Chiappas replica guns. The market is there. Yes there are millions of mosins but the milsurp markets will eventually dry up completely and the secondary market will drive prices past the budgets of many.

Finnish almost as hard to pronounce as Chzeck names or Polish names. Polish names would probably make the TTS program cry uncle.

Finns fought not against Russia in 1917-1918. It was the Finnish Civil war. Shortly after that an ethnic cleansing happened, where ethnic Russians, Ukrainians and Poles were exterminated by White Guards (Vyborg massacre).

Appreciate and respect your comment. Of course you understand this video si on firearms. If i were to go into Finnish history, it would be at least double the length, so in the interest of sticking to the point, I simply said Finland fought for its freedom between 1917 and 1918. It was the White vs Red thing, and definitely Russia was a factor, if not directly involved like in the Winter War. You have me thinking though maybe one day I should do historical videos?

I deeply respect your knowledge and your work Misha, your channel is awesome! Not sure if your show has to be more historical though. To do that you might need to demonstrate maps, photos and other documents in the video, which will bring video editing to the next level of complexity and also will cause a holy war in the comments. Please take this opinion with a grain of salt - I may be wrong - you may be able to make it work great with just a good narration. From a big fan of your channel! You just caused me to buy an early M91 with the original Russian barrel and eschucheons, just like yours, hahaha.
