I was super surprised with the quality coming out from the iPhone 15 Pro Max during my Camino de Santiago trip last week. But, still can't beat the details from Sony a7IV and the stabilisation coming out from GoPro 11. Other than that, iP15PM is a great travel companion.

My set up for recording log footage with the iPhone 15 Pro is a Crucial X9 4 TB SSD connected over USB-C via a Duttek USB-C to USB-C male-to-male adapter. The adapter is only about one inch long. The SSD is super light and compact. There is no stress on the connector due to the low weight of the SSD.

Great video, really enjoyed it! It's only going to be a few years until you can fully replace a dedicated camera kit with a smartphone for almost anything. Once they can get the high megapixel sensor working with all the lenses and get better low light performance, game over.

Cell Phone cameras are mainly good enough if you're viewing the content on a........cell phone Otherwise they're not good enough HOWEVER...they're super important when you consider you're cellphone camera is the only camera you have in many situations

@@nonamenosurname8516 I have the newest iPhone 📱 and get the newest one annually. Al though a great camera for a phone it still is only a .6” sensor. cameras are kind of like a golf club driver. A 50 dollar driver can produce the same result as 400 dollar driver in some situations. However over the course of several use cases You will see the difference in results. I do however agree with you that the gap is closing. Especially with video with the new Apple ProRes Log. At this point I don’t understand why Apple doesn’t just have their own camera with a larger sensor like an APSC. I know I’d be interested.

Hey Jason, please tell me which travel gimbal is best Crane M3 or DJI RS3 mini.....??

The 1.28 type sensor on the latest iPhone is good enough for all needs (my Android phone Xiaomi 13t uses a sensor of a similar size), at least up to ISO 1600 without crop because currently the AI denoise feature on Adobe Camera Raw is quite perfect. Unfortunately, now smartphone manufacturers choose 24mm as the main camera. If only the main camera on a smartphone uses a longer focal length such as 35mm. Or at least between 28-35mm. As someone who has been too used to using the 35mm lens on the original Fujifilm X100 for the last 8 years, 24mm is definitely too wide for my taste. Yes, you can crop, but it doesn't take advantage of the entire camera sensor.

On the iPhone 15 Pro I’m able to switch it to 35mm and still take 24MP photos, Yes it’s technically a crop but unlike all other iPhones it preserves the details, For example on the regular 15 if I did 35mm in would only do 12MP photos,

Thanks for the detailed video, this made me to decide to go ahead with my iPhone 15 Pro Max (from IPhone X Max) instead of Sony A74 (currently having old Nikon D5500)..the good part with IPhone is versatile and easy access..also the storage space improved in the new iPhone..the issue with the any Pro camera is that the expensive lenses and it’s need different lenses for different setups..so I will stick with my iPhone upgrade..

For people who want to shoot KZread vids, social media content, travel, vlogging, fitness shots, etc, iPhone 15 pro is perfect for the job and very portable. Phone cameras have come a long way and will only continue to get better. But yeah for pro work obviously you would need an actual camera with lenses

thanks to iPhone 15pro (not max), I finally have my first own background on 4k monitor - its a portrait of my dog standing on the rock. It looks really nice ! iPhone or any cellphone has its limits compare to actual camera. But I love how big cellphones companies are pushing it. Quality gets better and better every year. Who would dare to say to compare actual camera to cellphone 3years ago? I cant wait to use iPhone 20pro.

I ended up sticking to the iPhone Pro even though I did enjoy the 5x on the Max! Battery life can drain fairly quickly with ProRes Shooting

How would one use an external mic and external HD at the same time?

You can already turn off the camera stabilizer on the 15 pro max, I think by being able to turn it off and use a gimbal you could have even more resolution.

As soon as you go in the evening anywhere eg restaurants with low light the quality on smartphones, just is bad when you watch back on a large 4k tv amout of noise is ridiculous compared with a mirriorless or larger sensor camera

Are you going to try the Pocket 3? I think you’d be surprised how much of an upgrade it is over the Pocket 2… it now has a sensor twice the size of the 15 Pro’s main camera. It would be cool to see your opinion of it!

The major downside to the Pocket 3 is you only have one 20mm lens which is far too wide unless all you do is film yourself talking to a camera and taking selfies. If it had crop options, it might be pretty good.

@@michaelbell75 they have a magnetic 0.75x lens attachment to make it even wider… I really wish they would release a magnetic 2x lens too. Maybe Moment could release something like that.

How much iPhone 16 will be different in terms on camera?

I want to be completely transparent and hopefully it helps my frustration. So I bought a $5,000 Sony A7 IV & lens setup, but I’m a novice in the realm of photography and videography. I’m completely regretting buying that equipment to still suck at photography and videography. I can 110% saying it is the knowledge of the individual behind the camera… oh and EDITING, you get someone with skill in Lightroom and photoshop and the creation goes into another dimension. I bought an iPhone 15 Pro Max today for giggles and damn am I contemplating selling my camera. My hope is that one day I acquire the skill to actually be good enough to actually seek the benefits of the Sony setup, but I’m afraid by then my equipment will be outdated. Am I the only one who might’ve jumped out of my abilities thinking the equipment makes the biggest difference?

I bought iPhone 15pro in september, because of portrait mode could be done from live photos. My sis bought me online LrC/PS course for Xmas. During introduction I said my main camera is cellphone. Lecturer mocked me. After some time we were asked to upload some of our pics, and lecturer asked me why I wasnt uploading my cellphone pictures. I told her I was. BTW search for lenses for iPhone they improve pictures by a lot. I have Moment 58mm tele lense and its great So far cellphones are overall worse than actual camera, but there are same areas when quality is equal at least for amateur usage (own background on 4K TV).

I'm impressed that they're that high in the sky with nothing holding it recording with no fear of dropping it

We are actually tethered quite securely! I had a neckstrap on the iPhone hence why I said I didn't use the external SSD during the flight to record. Whenever we fly with any company, they are incredibly strict with harnesses for cameras.

Thanks for the excellent review of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. I have the 15 Pro Max as well, and at 11:44, just wondering, do you think future iOS updates would allow pictures taken with 3x (70mm) zoom be directly cropped from the main 48mp sensor like the 28mm (1.2x) and 35mm (1.5x) zoom (Basically have 0.5x, 1x, 1,2x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x and 5x zoom options as default), or is it a hardware issue that cannot be fixed? It’s a shame that pictures taken with 3x zoom is worse off in quality than at 5x (120mm) zoom.

@@cphotos153 I have to disagree. Yes 12MPx from actual camera is better in most situations (but at some situation its equal) than 48MPx from iPhone. I am aware of how iPhone is making those 48MPx, but its not as simple as u said. When u look at pictures on small screen it look all the same, but when you see picture on 4K TV there is huge difference between 48MPx (its really great) and 24MPx (it look wierd). Yes native 48MPx will always be better than upscaled 12MPx to 48MPx. But its way better than 24MPx. And this is 1st gen. For normal ppl who just want nice pictures to remember or post them on social networks. Cellphones will be camera they will be using. What I dont like is fact that each picture is between 60-150MB.

When not shooting RAW, do you shoot in HEIC or JPG?

Golden hour/blue hour from overlooking Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo is amazing! Did you do any interiors in Florence? We just returned from Switzerland and the Rhine River and my S23 Ultra got its fair share of use although I'm not going to ditch my A7Riv or A6700. (Although I could see an A7CR or A7RV...) I stuck to the bigger sensors for interiors. OTOH, a phone is a big part of travel for documents, organizing, mapping, etc., even without the photo/video side of things, they are great for travel.

Nothing compares to mirrorless cameras when wanting to take night photography especially Astro. Other than that the iPhone 15 pro max is great using the daylight.

It might not be in the same league, but people are getting some good results. Checkout a video for night sky photos from the 15 pro max by @ShayneMostynMobilePhotography . Sorry don't dare linking it since youtube dinged me for linking before.

I know people are saying how much better cameras are than a smartphone or iPhone 15 is but you do realize the average person can’t afford to drop 3k on a camera so a smartphone is convenient for the average person, keep in mind that the majority of my KZreads are filmed on a canon that was 800 dollars and that was the cheaper end of cameras and some of my shots come out better on iPhone 13 Pro max

I like the video coming out of the iphone 15 pro max...I will learn how to use the Black magic app soon...question...which is the "best" gimbal for the iphone 15 pro max? I see that you like the DJI Osmo mobile 6...I may attach an external SSD to it. Your travel video is awesome...viva Italia!

I would recommend using the Blackmagic app for ProRes recording when using a gimbal! Yes get the DJI Osmo 6!

I got my FX30 because you said so...and when I make videos that I need to deliver quickly I just use the standard creative style...because you said so...LOL... I have a Osmo 3 which I used with the 11pro max long ago..but now the 15 pro max is a lot better for video and for social content I would prefer to use the phone for vertical video and not crop my 4k footage from the FX30. The Osmo 6 looks good-I wish it had better battery. Even the Osmo 3 has 14 hours. Enjoy the trip!

It’s optical zoom, Yes optical. Pro Max is 120mm 5x zoom. 12mp RAW output.

@@careylymanjonesCorrect Tony Northrup has done a video on the 15 Pro max and was not impressed as you are trading quality in the mid range for quality at the longer range, yes the crop is brutal. The video shows a chart of the crop effects.

they got sticky products you can use to stick it to the back.

I have been using an iphone 15 pro max as my daily photo/video camera in japan for the past 2 months. Even shooting in H.265 in Blackmagic, videos look good provided good lighting conditions. But the iphone fails in low light conditions.

I'll stick with my fx3 for filmmaking. The lenses are better and you get all the formats with all of them. I'll take my internal h.265 4k s.Cinetone videos over any iPhone videos even if you're shooting pro res RAW.

One of the major things that make a camera system great is the lens size and I don’t think any smartphone camera system is replacing a pro camera in the near future solely ‘cos of impossibility to fit a pro camera-sized lens in a phone’s chassis

Only 15 pro max got the 5x lens. 15 pro did not

Why don't you try using the pro or manual mode to push the iphone to the edge, as the bigger cameras are manual only. This might be an interesting video

apple limits manual use to 12MPx. Everything but 48MPx looks really bad in lightroom/photoshop when u edit pictures.
