The first faked photograph
In 1839, Hippolyte Bayard invented photography. And nobody cared.

People usually associate the birth of photography with Louis Daguerre’s Daguerreotype. His process became the first widespread method of photography after France revealed it to the world on August 19, 1839. But there were actually multiple inventors of photography, and one of them was an amateur French tinkerer named Hippolyte Bayard. Even before Daguerre’s process was revealed, Bayard had achieved photographic results.
However, François Arago, the chair of the French Academy of Sciences, overlooked Bayard’s accomplishment and elevated Daguerre’s instead. And as a protest to this perceived injustice, Bayard took a self-portrait depicting himself as an unidentified man in the Paris Morgue who took his own life. This image is not only the first staged photo, it’s also an early example of photography depicting something non-literal and symbolic, laying the groundwork for the medium to be used as a form of creative expression.

Well.. he made it, didn't he? His life and his work is being shown to audiences so large that he could have never imagined it, almost 200 years later no less.
Bayard’s method for exposing an image and developing it is more akin to the processes for film photography today, so in the long run he won I guess.
@Seele2015au
2 жыл бұрын
Unlike Talbot's process, Bayard's process did not produce a negative that can be used to produce an unlimited number of positive prints, but a direct positive process, making each picture unique. If one needed a unique picture, daguerréotype gives that extra quality, so when all is said and done, Bayard's process, like the daguerréotype, was a dead end.

I like how clickbait was invented almost as early as actual photography
How have I never heard of this guy before? Wow he may not have been credited for inventing photography but ultimately created a new form of creative expression at the time
Louis Daguerre was a French painter who created "daguerreotypes", a process that gave portraits a sharp reflective style, like a mirror. Now you're totally stuck in the Retro Zone. Sad face.

This was fascinating. I knew multiple people had played around with photography but I hadn't known anyone else was so close to introducing a method to the world. Bayard's photos also have a gorgeous clarity to them, at least sometimes. Thank you for sharing such a great photo and an interesting counter figure in early photography.

Is it just me or would anyone love to see this as a full length film of Bayards life?

Vox Darkroom is actually the best series on the channel currently. Amazing work.
Fascinating story about the intersection of art, commerce, and politics.📷
Very exciting channel, thanks !
I wish I could have met this man. Liked to garden and just take fun pictures of his stuff, and he had (what appears to me) a fantastic sense of humor. He must have been so fun to talk with. I would have loved to see his process for coming up with fun pictures in a time period where that simply was not a thing or a concept for people.
Wow! The Bayard man was a real genius (no joke).
That's really awesome. A wonderfully artistic photo. I love this kind of analysis.

darkroom is a very interesting new series that combines both technology, more specifically, film/photography with history! and you know what, I LOVE IT! both of those topics interests me
Man, thanks for bringing M. Bayard to my attention
I really liked the video and the piece of information it delivers. I have a suggestion, you could have startex the video by explaining the photograph instead of explaining it in the middle and then carrying on into the back story. Audience would see it as if they are deducing the the photograph. Just a break in the narrative.
Very educational... thank you for sharing
One of the many reasons the daguerreotype was so popular was because of its extremely high quality, unlike many others techniques that came before or after 1839.
Please keep making this Darkroom series!
This story is truly amazing!
As a fellow upcoming photographer, I can relate to this video a little further. You see, this whole commotion screams envy and resentment. It also screams an opportunistic ill minded dude. These are some of the early feelings of competition we still see in today's photography world. Many of the local togs, short for photographers, are super envious. I get that competition drives the market, but this is the personal side of it. What photographers, like me, actually experience. By the way, love the research @Vox , its phenomenal. Wish i could write like that when doing college researches haha.
Didn't expect to care so much about a damn camera. Great video!
Wow, very interesting history, thanks!
can you also do a video about the mystery photograph of the first camera?
