Two Sol-Ark 15ks are rated for a combined 24kW to AC loads (100A @ 240V). More than what a lot of people need. But if you are using heatpumps, electric water heaters, electric ovens, and electric dryers, you can get up their quick. Say 9kW for an oven, 4.5kW for a water heater, 5kW for a dryer, several kW for an air conditioner, plus pumps all the smaller stuff. Combined, these two Sol-Arks can't run the on-demand hot-water heater in that house.

EMP hardening is cute. I love extra engineering and new product categories like you said BUT if the customer thinks this will let them shrug off some sort of nuclear event they’re out to lunch. Apparently they couldn’t even address a bee problem! In my mind a solution to truly be prepared for an event where EMP is of a concern is a reserve stock of standby equipment in your bunker… even pre-nuclear Armageddon you can’t get replacement stuff promptly!

  • @greenwolf401

The chance that an EMP will damage it is like 10 gazillion to 1. Fact is, IF you actually do the research an EMP attack won't do jack to 99.9% of the electronics that the fear mongers think. Many scientists have already proven this but people seem drawn to the fear mongers than real facts. This so called EMP shield is just a waste of money.

Yea that on demand unit is not cost or energy effe tive trying to go solar and battery. Sol ark already has smart load circuit for heating water during the day. Scratc h and dent water heaters are cheap and easy to reconfigure with smaller elements and put them in series. Then add a hybrid unit at the end running hot all the time. I do thos with 4-50gal water heaters with the final in series being hybrid. Easy and cheap and runs mostly during the day with a few days storage.

@engineer775, nice looking install!! I would love to know more about the EMP protections built in, and what did they build into the batteries for this? Did they just use relay traps? And, who did the testing? You need about 1 to 2 nanosecond (or less) shunt to ground every 250' of wiring upon over voltage pulse (via DOD specs). You have some long runs there, but's it's not easy to know the true distance of the panels to the controller/inverter panel from the video. Then, you have a long run to the barn from system and first breaker box. And, I'm not sure how long the run is to the secondary house breaker panel. There are products that can be used to help shunt to ground EMP on the ends of extended wiring runs, due to DC resistance in wire. You don't want to slow down the effective shunt time on product plugged into distances over 250'. Just a brainstorm here, but I would add an EMP Shield DC unit at the panels, and connect the green ground wire to your separate earth ground you set there. I would also add one of their 2 faze AC home units into the barn's breaker box. And, if the house's secondary breaker box has wire runs extending the whole run from main in to end of that breaker's wiring to over 250', another home unit can be added at that second home breaker box. This will help protect all assets plugged into the whole electrical system. Just a thought. ;)

Very nice setup. I'm in the process of putting in a 6kWh split controller/inverter with 5.4kWh of solar with 20kWh of EG4 LiFePo4 batteries with a couple of transfer switches. Offgrid until I connect on. I have a feeling that the system you set up there cost a wee bit more than mine. What is your take on the hardening? If an EMP went off over the US, could that system actually stay up and running, or is it still a tossup? You have a lot of wire attached.
