There's a whole genre of modern trashy Russian literature called "попаданцы" ("accidentally-ended-up-ers") that more closely match this version of issekai. It's usually about middle-aged ultranationalistic dudes with military background accidentally ending up in important periods of Russian history and changing them "for the better". I.e. there are the historic events that the ultranationalists are still salty about, see them as humiliating, and really want to see them play out differently, and here they get to experience this fantasy.

@@Based_Gigachad_001 Not necessarily cringe if you are actually looking for good anime. Stories like Mob Psycho 100 are profound works of art in my opinion. There are certain genres of anime that (subjectively) some may consider more cringe than others, but anime is quite literally just shorthand for Japanese animation; it's a very diverse art form.

Note about Alexandre Dumas' dad: he was Haitian so not only was he from a poor background and worked his way up to general under Napoleon and one of the great powerful people in France, but he was also black and descended from slaves. It was repeatedly brought up during Dumas' lifetime, as you can expect he clashes with a lot of people over his heritage. A lot of historians concur his public experiences of being mixed race in the 1800s coloured the anti aristocrat vibes in his works

There was a point of course in the gun vs sword debate where it was more of an even fight, because guns were unreliable but swords were at their best. Even in the time of the musketeers the muskets were mostly used situationally. Luckily for the protagonist of this book, he was born at a time when guns were useful and he knew how to construct them!

This is a really good review for a book that always left a sour taste in my mouth. I read it as a kid and ended up hating the main character because of how condescending he was and - in the end - left the world a much worse place in no small part due to his introduction of advanced technology (there's that bit where he causes the black plague at the end for example). Later, I found out that Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) ended up in crippling debt due to his investments in new technology that never panned out. I want to say that it was 'steam powered weaving machines' but I can't remember. I think the CT Yankee in King Arthur's Court reflects that disillusionment with the idea of technological progress saving the world. The author had lived through the American Civil war which was a major demonstration of how horrifying war on an industrial scale could be - the battle of Vicksburg, for example, was basically a trial run for trench warfare.

While the book was funny, I dislikiked that it fo heavily uses and perpetuates the myth of our ancesters being stupid and the "enlightened" modern man. We are not in any way smarter then our ancestors thousands if years ago, we just have a larger body of knowledge and a higher level of technology to work with. The people who invented wheels and boatmaking were the same kinds of geniuses that invented cars, planes and rockets. Complex Economies existed since the invention of writing and monarchies weren't a fact of nature either, repuclics and communes existed in different forms long before men put on crowns, and kingdoms have been plagued by peasant revolts for their entire history. Ancient people were not stupid, modern people are just arrogant.
