Here's the thing about money: it has basically three jobs. First, it has to be acceptable for trade. Second, it should be hard (ideally impossible) to fake. And third, it needs to be a stable store of value. Centralizing the currency under the Empire handles the first role, because people seem willing to accept and spend Imperial credits. Presumably they have ways to spot counterfeits - I'd be surprised if Imperial Center didn't have an entire bureau specially dedicated to that - which takes care of the second requirement. But the third? If Coruscant thinks it can solve all its budget problems by endlessly printing cash? That's a big, fat *FAIL* for the third requirement. Every new credit that gets "printed" for quick government cash chips away at the value of all the other credits already in circulation. That is, if all you do is double the number of credits overnight, the value of each one is cut in half. That's bad news for anyone who has credits in hand: you had a hundred yesterday, but that hundred credits will only buy half the amount of stuff today. Fortunately, any parallels to real-world monetary policies are, I'm sure, pure coincidence. Star Wars is fiction, and real leaders would _never_ be so foolish to think they could just paper their way out of budget problems, right? Right...? ...Oh, dear.

In some of the legends stuff, Palpatine was going the mercantile route, by doing things like granting special charters to the "reformed" Seperatist-allied corporations and granting them "pillage rights" to thousands of "mostly unpopulated" planets the Republic once had in protectorate status. The Corporate Sector Authority could exploit and strip mine to their heart's content and exercise legal authority (under an Imperial Advisor) there, as long as they coughed up an huge amount of tax revenue back to the Empire's coffers. We also get a hint of that kind of exploitation in the Imperial-chartered Mining Guild, which provided vast quantities of raw materials for Imperial war production, in exchange for their leaders getting a nice "skim" as long as the minerals kept flowing. Interruptions might bring a visit from the guy in the black cape with respiratory issues, so enthusiasm was maintained. As we see with China today, that kind of mercantilist system can last a long time, and Palpatine wasn't worried about the very long-term consequences, as long as he could maintain a Starfleet and later, the Death Star, to graphically demonstrate what happened to planets that tried to defy the Empire, or it's taxation policies. How many devotees of Adam Smith or Milton Friedman are permitted to chime in on their opinions of the Chinese Communist Party's economic policies, do you think?

Printing money works as long as the people believe in its value.

If Palpatine wasn't a power hungry Sith lord, he could've easily made the Galactic empire light years better than the Republic that preceded it. Giving everybody a chain code could potentially reduce crime and make those who earn a living off of it(Bounty hunters) a LOT better, him creating imperial academies to give more people the chance to earn a living, nationalization of the credit banking system for a better economy. All great ideas, but they were not great because the empire was ultimately lying to it's populous in the end.

During times of war even the most libertarian democracy institutes some level of press censorship, for security if nothing else. Given the course the clone wars took, and the changes we see in the senate and republic in that time, I wouldn’t be surprised to find much of the press under state control quite early in the conflict.

Same tactic was used after WW1 during Germany's reconstruction period to pay off war debt. Which caused major inflation and starvation of the people. Stupid Allied Forces of that era. Also in WW2 funny money was printed by Germany and Annis Power to disrupt Allied econemy.

True, but today it’s done not as a result of an evil dictatorship, and instead it’s to help create one by destroying our country and it’s economy, as they want people desperate enough to support anything, for example, the left’s push to replace our democratic republic that operates a capitalist economy to a authoritarian dictatorship under a communist control, similar to that how our current President’s owners in the CCP control China. I’m sorry, but anyone that doesn’t recognize that all of these actions, each of which make things worse, are intentional, have obviously drank to much of the commie Kool-Aid and can’t see reality anymore. Just look at how they stretched out the 3xtra unemployment payments, knowing it was keeping a significant number of people from working, but within a couple days of it ending, Biden announced he as forcing the vaccine mandate on companies and their employees, which of course keeps a large batch of people from working, further extending the damage he’s already done. As OAC mistakenly admitted once, “we don’t necessarily want your money, we just want the power that comes with it, so just give us the power we want and we can fix everything.” Sadly this was met my applause.

I’ve been loving the Bad Batch, for many reasons, but one big one is that we’re finally getting to see some of the early days of the Empire, I just hope they don’t rush through this time period, and instead take 5heir time so we can see the empire consolidate it’s hold on the galaxy, the planets in it, and the people on those planets. It’s also great to see Clone Force 99, have to learn to manage and survive on their own, without the support of the republic or anyone else, all while getting used to having a child with them.

What would have been cool is if Palp's had a unit of storm troopers that were trained to use the fallen Jedi's lightsabers rather than just destroy them, it'd be a special unit similar to death troopers and dark troopers, he could have the inquisitors bleed them to have an army kitted out with red sabers. any ideas on what to call then?

Heck, they could have an inquisitor or two in charge of each unit, the main job being hunting down Jedi, then doing all the big jobs that require killing enemies of the empire in a quick & efficient manner.

@@davidordaz5251 Well not quite, as Christopher puts it mass producing weapons as the Vong were a threat to his power in the EU, but here's something that's true to both versions as he wasn't quite done yet even though he had most of the galaxy in his iron grip. His own personal Dark Side projects that he could pursue without the only real threat to him to oppose him anymore; the Jedi. The Empire was just a shell to surround himself with and once it can take care of itself without his involvement, he can endlessly devote himself and the corrupted Chosen One Darth Vader to further explore the depths of the Dark Side of the Force. I think his endgame goal was to further the ambitions of his late master Plageuis into becoming a god with a capital G with complete control over everything, including the Force itself. TLDR, becoming the Dark Side itself.

Mace Windu formed the Jedi League of Shadows and trained a group of vigilante Jedi Knights to protect the galaxy against corruption. Over the years their methods became more sophisticated. During the days of the Old Republic they had loaded Federation ships with battle droids. Sacked the Tusken camps. They attempted to assassinate the Chancellor, knowing full well it would lead to the Empire which would end Republic corruption. When it reached the pinnacle of decadence and wasted its resources on futile Death Stars, the Jedi League burned the Homestead to the ground leading to the rise of a New Hope, a young Skywalker who would bring the complacent Emperor to his end. When the Galactic Triumvate lost its way, the Jedi League instigated the One Sith and kept its operative Darth Talon at its heart to monitor events.

Hey Alan, I have a question for you. When I think about the galactic Civil War and the clone wars I realized that there was a lot of cool military resources in the clone wars from both the republic and separatist sides and then I thought what would've Palpatine done differently than scraping so much to fuel his regime? I mean yeah the b1 Droid clearly had some faulty programming and the only advantage they had was their numbers and cost only a fraction of what the clones did but we see plenty of examples where they run ship operations more effectively than organics. and considering the tie fighter's lack if hyperactive and shield, they would have been better off if Palpatine kept most of the venator class star ships and deployed them through that instead of the destroyer. Hmmm, as a future dictator myself I'd do a few things different. 1. No central bank 2. Low rate flat tax on all citizens 3. Install planetary governers based on merit 4. Institute PDF(Planetary Defense Force) and SDF(System Defense Fleet) standards 5. Install Thrawn as head of training and doctrine at Imperial Command 6. Enact charter of Imperial Rights for citizens and path to citizenship 7. Enact Base Delta Zero on Sith 'homeworld' of Korriban 8. Declare war on the Hutts. Massive militarization, construction of a more practical fleet(though with similar numbers), no Sith influence on culture or military doctrine, freedom and prosperity to make my people stronger for the coming conflicts. I think this would help prepare my Galaxy for the inevitable invasion of the WAAAAAGH!

The entire Jedi Order temple was refurbished and sections of it lay in ruin to remind the Empire of the Republic's corruption and collusion with the Jedi. In the canon storyline, the Imperial Palace was the refurbished Jedi Order's Temple.

There was an EU Force power called Force Mask. It was implied that Palps turned into a ballsack way earlier and Mace Windu's attack was the perfect time to undo it as a crocodile tears gambit. (The other known user of Force Mask was Lord Zash in SWTOR)

I thought of a topic that might be interesting: How Valkorion caused the population of Zakuul to become apathetic about their wealth and thus prevented any opposition. Compare this to Palpatine's internal politics that led to the rebellion. What would Palaptine's empire have looked like and how long it could have lasted if he had taken over Valkorion's internal politics.

hey alan, so all of those were interesting moves palpatine made but there were som mistakes he made. here'swhat id do; 1.) down-size the I.S.D. program. in a previous video you comented the isd was just a venator on steroids and i agree . but i see it more a a mobile command base than a starship. given it was the most time consuming and resource intensive ship, i wouldve used them to gaurd key hyperspace lanes, attach them to r&d facilities or military instalations. 2.) expand the roles of the inquisitors. when you comepare them to jedi or sith lords, they always fall short, but agianst PDF's or other military they'rein a leauge of their own. not to mention their training and experience centers around stealth, interrogation and tracking, it makes more sense to work more with groups like the ISB. plus weve seen in games, comics and shows they're capable of leading special projects like in jedi fallen order or the excavation of the temple on lothal. 3.) switch roles between death troopers and storm troopers. out of all the differences between the 2 is how much uncle palppy invested in. compared to death trooper armor, storm trooper armor was better equipped to handle civilian uprisings. then you have death trooper armor is just as light but much stronger, better equipped, sprayed with a special polymer which scrambles sensors not to mention the possible genetic enhancments, making them super soldiers.the storm trooper work better as the security forces for the ISB. 4.)they say cant buy loyalty but i argue that if you do it right you can. i would've taken worlds such as ryloth as an example of the old republics failure to adress and handle issues like slavery and wrongful imprisonment by offering relief packages hat came with healthcare, resources and added benefits if they joined the imperial military. the T'wileks have been invaded, raided and been fighting for generations so odds are they don't really want to concern themselves outside their system but galcticly/technologically speaking they never developed enough to come up with hyper-space travel on their own and live in a somewhat hostile environment so they'll want things they can't develop on their own advancments. this actually worked on our own planet in the 1500's when pain and portugal tried to invade Brazil. the spanish went through a brutal campaign and lost while the Portuguese used the same tactic, giving the brazillians what they couldnt have and was eventually absorbed into portugal. now thats why folks in Brazil speak Portuguese. and since im buying businesses, federilized the banking system and absorbing everything i can afford it

@@gamingandchilll3837 I mean, one could make the argument that Wilson also set the precedent for the “New Democrats” which is the philosophy biden adheres to. Not to mention the many stark parallels between palpatine and Wilson that simply can’t be ignored. Such as the creation of the fed (central banking), his revitalization of the KKK (promoting one race above all others), and increased military presence in developing nations (like in the outer rim). That said, if the empire actually lasted beyond palpatine, to a considerable measure, then we’d probably see a ruler similar to that of biden governing the empire. Essentially, a technocratic puppet - maybe similar to Clovis. But who knows, this is just my hot take.

The Empire fulfilled the 3 concepts of a galactic currency in the following manner: 1. The Empire provided a galactic currency that would be universal and accepted throughout the entire galaxy. We see a notable difference between "Republic credits are no good out here" in Episode 1 versus the accepted Imperial currency in Episode 4 of the saga. 2. The Imperial Credit would have the security and sanctity of an everlasting currency and unit of money. Thus it was accepted as a mechanism to conduct trade and commerce by all worlds, species and entities. 3. As for value, I believe the Empire had the equivalent of a gold standard. No doubt, the Emperor had the Imperial Monetary Authority abide by the Imperial Basic Law that "Nothing shall be made legal tender in the Galactic Empire except Twilek females, or a Currency fully backed and fixed to Twilek females." It is likely that the Imperial Monetary Authority on Coruscant/Imperial Center would only issue Imperial Credits in a fixed proportion to the accrued number of Twilek females being accumulated at the Imperial Vault (which the Jedi Temple was repurposed for). Imperial citizens could exchange their Credits for Twilek females at any time thus providing confidence in the value of the Imperial Credit.
