Every industry has there scary stories. Looking clean and sober are the 2 of them that hit most. I have been told on deliveries that some people are just sketchy and don't hold themselves up as honest or honorable. I have been told that other guys look like they are on something. I have been given the complement of "its nice to meet someone thats not on something" and makes me feel great and said at the same time. But when they need wood again they will remember me over the other guy..

Hi John - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. Very true words you write there. The only college I went to was the University of Life. I learnt early on that I didn't have to have any more ability than the next man, just a different attitude. If a colleague was prepared to go at 5mph I would do 10mph. If somebody was asked to do 10 miles I would volunteer 20. The only difference needed was drive and enthusiasm. Likewise, in business that little bit of extra effort is rewarded ten fold, the week passes quicker and growth has the best opportunity.

From a guy who was a fellow Ohio resident, born and raised, I'm 6' 4", 240 lbs and bullet proof, at least I was 30 years ago. What I've learned since then is once you reach a certain age you have to take care of your back. Bending over to pickup then bending over to stack, will take its toll. First suggestion is getting a motorized wheel barrow or cart. Drive it up on a platform in your truck hitch just like a wheelchair ramp.

Would you let us know what percentage of your income is generated by your sales to restaurants? I'm just curious because here in Germany we're in our second hard lock down (including all restaurants) for almost 4 weeks by 10th January, and it definitely will be extended. Some of the restaurants switched to delivery or 'to go' services, however, most of them are completely closed.

Hi Brian - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I used to split approx 150 cords p.a. for a company and moved all my bucked logs with a large capacity double wheeled barrow. It was functional but required a certain technique, particularly when steering but it worked good in open spaces. I found that when fully loaded it was pushing my limits of stamina, but that's probably my age! The downside to them is their restricted manoeuvrability in tight situations and their increased weight and bulk for loading onto a truck as Joe did in this video. The same issues would probably afflict electric models, plus of course the increased capital expenditure. It's hard to beat a good old fashioned single pneumatic wheeled barrow for overall versatility. Keep on Splitting!

Heat wise, my records indicate that it provides 2400 kWhs at 30% moisture content per cubic metre. By way of comparison Ash is 2600 and Beach is 2700. At the same moisture content Sycamore weights 700kgs compared to Ash 757 and Beach 786. Compared to the rubbish I have to process, if I only had Sycamore to split I would be in splitting heaven!

I think a lot of people get hung up on the retail price of firewood. I call it "commodity price." That is the price you can buy it any day of the year. I even buy it at the price and resell it. Also, a 1/4 cord is NOT worth a 1/4 cord. If you can sell a cord for $400 that does not mean a 1/4 cord is worth $100. A 1/4 cord is worth much more. Just like a 20oz Dr Pepper costs more than a 2 liter bottle. Delivery is a fee, stacking is a fee. For me I stay away from the home heating market bc those customers are looking for cheap firewood. I sell to people who only burn occasionally and will pay a value to have clean, seasoned firewood. I made a vid back in the summer call "value added firewood. I think I explained it better there than I did in this response. LOL. Thanks for watching Bill. Joe

So put an advertisement on the newspaper bags or an insert wrapping the paper on a select route of firewood. My thinking is basically brainstorming. The idea is to get customers close to your business and deliver on a route like the paper. Maybe the paper-route has marketing info about home values and you can target your potential customers better. Also for marketing, you have your t-shirts and could give away coupons to that restaurant that cooks with your wood. Heck partner with them on the advertisement in the paper.
