The great Arnold Palmer was a two-time Open Champion, a hero to many and a player who drew crowds whenever he stepped onto the course.
A true trailblazer in making golf an international sport, Palmer made his Open Championship debut in 1960. He finished runner-up at St Andrews, losing to Kel Nagle by just one shot.
Palmer’s appearance at the championship was significant to the legacy of The Open. His participation started to attract more American players to compete in golf's original championship.
One year later, he won his first Claret Jug. Then in 1962, he successfully defended his Open title, cementing him as one of the greatest The Open had ever seen.
The American made 23 appearances at The Open from 1960 until his final appearance in 1995.
His farewell to The Open took place during The 124th Championship - at the course he first competed at, St Andrews. It was here that the crowds gathered to witness a golfing icon wave goodbye on the Swilcan Bridge in an emotional moment for Palmer and fans alike.

It’s impossible to not miss this man!! A legend on and off the golf course!!
I'm sure there were others but Arnold Palmer was the first BIG golfer to bring the sport to "Lower class/Lower income" golfers. If it weren't for him I would have never picked up golf. One Arnold Palmer tea and a google search later the next day I'm playing my first round. Don't let stereotypes change your view on things. I grew up not having much, but when I started playing golf I realized just what a beautiful and humbling sport it is. Let the greats continue to be examples... anyone can do it. anyone has the talent.. anyone can be great.. you just have to be positive and work at it. Thank you Arnold for all that you've done for the game. From one person in a town in Minnesota, THANK YOU.

@@robbie192 Obviously, you either are young and have no recollection of Palmer, or you know very little about golf, or both.
I love his spirit, he didn't want to stop and pose for a photo yet, he wanted to *play some damn golf!* Even though everyone knew what a special and final occasion it was, he made sure to leave EVERY drop of competitive juice on the golf course.
