There was a time, right before he became everyone's favorite sheriff in Mayberry, that Andy Griffith made a film that bombed so badly he wondered if his career was over. Then, another choice he made caused his phone to stop ringing with offers for one year.

I saw "Onionhead" on TV 50 years ago, but I don't remember anything about it; thanks for reminding me.

After seeing A Face in the Crowd, several times, and catching No Time for Sergeants as well, I wondered why he didn't make a real career in feature films. Okay, now we know why. Hey, All those years on TV didn't do his bank account any harm.

Very interesting content. I remember seeing Mr. Griffith as an Air Force pilot. I just didn't know what the movie was. Thanks for filling in the blanks there. Thanks for posting it. Have a great day everyone

Thank you for this info. I remember as a kid on the Saturday night movies back in the '60s is the first time I saw no time for sergeants on TV. I love that movie. Of course I know all about The Andy Griffith show but I didn't know about the movie onion head. Never seen it but thank you for the info anyway.

My Dad bought a copy of "What it Was Was Football." I still remember the episode of I Love Lucy that introduced Andy Taylor and Mayberry. Desi & Lucy were on a road trip vacation in their white T-Bird convertible and they get pulled over by Andy, who was the Sheriff, the Justice of the Peace, and every other official of Mayberry governance. No Time For Sergeants is widely recognized as an outstanding, classic picture. A later film Griffith was good in was Hearts of the West, where he played a crusty old cowboy stuntman in 2-reelers. He was also exceptionally chilling in his villain roles.

It was Danny Thomas who introduced the Andy Taylor character.

I watched Onionhead on TCM and remember thinking it was a dark comedy.

We enjoyed it. Strange how you'll like a particular film, then hear how bad it's supposed to be. Another example is Good Neighbor Sam. Most Lemmon fans rate this entertaining movie up there with The Odd Couple, etc. However, it was panned even by Lemmon, whose performance was in fact wonderful.
