The Film ARG/Viral Marketing Iceberg Explained

Фильм және анимация

I've come back once again to another iceberg, but for good reason. Everyone and their grandmothers have covered ARGs (alternate reality games) on the Internet because everyone and their grandmother have MADE ARGs on the Internet. However, strangely enough, ARGs made by big budget marketing companies have rarely gotten coverage, until now. Today, I'm gonna be looking at some of the most interesting ARGs and viral marketing stunts made to promote movies.

I think my favorite “viral marketing” stunt was when for Aqua Teen Hunger Force they put up super sketchy looking Light Bright like devices, yet people in Boston thought they were bombs leading to the whole city getting shut down. Just simple yet funny

The Detective Pikachu fake leak stunt and the Magnolia hotline ad are ingenious, definitely my two favorite examples on the whole iceberg (with an honorable mention to the Psycho campaign, especially for how ahead of its time it was)

Genuinely don't know how I had never heard of the Dark Knight "Why So Serious" campaign until now. So much marketing stuff is wiped away and only left behind through word of mouth and reputation only. Thank you for another excellent video, Zelcher! Also, top-notch music selection for this video as usual.

Viral marketing is always really kinda neat because something about it just feels more passionate and interested in the media they've made. I'm glad so many of these have been able to be archived to some degree.

Yeah I’ve always found these marketing campaigns cool, especially ARGs. I knew of the main ones like Cloverfield and Batman but i was genuinely surprised to learn about the args for Spider-Man and Men in Black. They seem to be forgotten to time now so hopefully this video brings some attention to their existence.

Blair Witch had a great viral marketing stunt. The movie was initially marketed as a movie called The Woods (I'm pretty sure) with that even being the title in the first trailer and when it was first screened early at comic con it was revealed to be a Blair Witch movie. Even while it was first being shown, outside teh screening room the posters for it were being replaced with posters that had the Blair Witch title. One of the greatest marketing stunts I know of. I hope you talk about it if you do a part two

Oh and The Batman had an ARG too that was pretty similar to The Dark Knight ARG just on a much smaller scale. Alien: Covenant also similar to Prometheus had many short films that gave extra character development and filled in some of the gaps in between the events of Alien: Covenant and Prometheus. There was also a website where you could ask questions and I think there some Blade Runner easter eggs on the site too if I'm remembering correctly

I really wish I got to experience some of those ARG's/marketing stuff for movies in the late 2000's and early 2010's because they looked like they took the dedication to building this second story for the film to 1000%. Especially the Dark Knight and Cloverfield one. With experimental marketing now it's always "here's reference to upcoming movie. Be sure to watch it on this date". But like you said with the Dark Knight, it was a full year on game to uncover secrets and clues for this game to market the film but it seemed much than that and involved so many different websites and actual meet ups at conventions. They just don't make em like they used to.

Wow, I'll be honest didn't think you'd make one of these again after the last one, didn't really think there was that much to explore, I always liked the intrigue of these videos, theres always an element of unease to them, not something like horror, but somthing among the type of vibe that usual iceberg videos have, but it's aleays a treat to see one of the OG's post somehting like this.
