The Fighter Plane Powerful Enough to Destroy a Satellite in Space

Ойын-сауық

In the midst of the Cold War, the U.S. began to develop anti-satellite aircrafts to combat Russia's vast space expansion. This F-15 footage from 1985 is the first time they succeeded.

35000 feet? 10 second firing window? That's a leisurely walk in the park for the F-15, and pilot. The real star is that missile it's going from 35,000 feet to 300,000 feet all on a infrared seeker head.

My understanding was that the plane initiated a dive to build speed, at 35k it pulled vertical at near airframe loading limits and rode the burners until it was nearly stalled around 90k before firing. It wasn't so much flying as it was riding on the engine.

The F15 is one badass plane. I hear it will remain in service past 2024. It has a record of over 100 kills and no losses. I led a video crew to Langley AFB in Virginia in the 90s to film these planes and their pilots in takeoff and landing displays. The tarmac literally rumbles as they land and takeoff again and again. That was one of my favorite field assignments.

This solution sounds crazy but why don't we fire something magnetic into space and get as much junk to stick to it as we could and have it fly as far from earth as it could before running out of rocket fuel. Perhaps some of the junk will stick and be taken far enough out of earths gravitational pull that the pull of gravity-less space will pull it away as it drifts infinitely into the abyss.

I wonder about this… The missile only weighed 2600 pounds, a small fraction of an F-15’s ordinance capacity and similarly not a whole lot for other fighter airframes either. And it launched at just mach 1.2 at only 38,000 feet. They seem like fairly modest performance requirements for the tomcat and falcon and other aircraft.

The missile could not be fired from ground level and hit the satellite which was at 345,000 feet altitude. But...the rocket could be fired from an altitude of 35,000 feet so that it only had 310,000 feet of altitude to gain after leaving the plane. The idea that the missile could not be fired from ground level but could be fired from 35000 feet is the most interesting part of this video.
