The Fight to Protect Street Food Vendors | Hungry For More

Ойын-сауық

From tacos to hot dogs, some of the most popular and iconic Los Angeles food started with street vendors. In this episode of our Emmy-nominated docuseries, Hungry For More, we highlight the stories of street vendors in Los Angeles - cooking what they love, and driven by the need to provide for their families.
Survival for street vendors in LA has gotten increasingly difficult due to strict and overly complicated permitting laws. Yet these micro-entrepreneurs continue their fight to activate spaces and provide affordable and delicious meals to their community.

@@khalilahd. If you have a health code permit, then that means you are permitted to vend. The issue is that most of these vendors are not under health codes and have not even filed the paperwork to do so. For me, I will eat anything, I don't care. However this is how the city works. I find it amusing that a lot of people won't eat at vendors unless that have at least a B, but they will go to bat for people who don't have any rating at all. There are codes for a reason, regardless if you agree with them or not. I bet you would be upset if 10 vendors set outside of your residence with no permits.

@@TheOriginalArchie health permits are incredibly hard to come by and expensive for street carts because they were made for larger vendors like food trucks. It’s a big reason why most street carts don’t have one. Wild that only now the government is looking to revise the process to make it easier for smaller street vendors to obtain a permit.

Street food vendors are a pivotal part of society. Locally and globally, they preserve food history. Introducing people to something new and giving something familiar, a taste of home, to the initiated. Some of the best food I've had has come from an abuela vendor. I understand the need for codes and having permits. I also see both sides of the story. That being said.. preserve these treasures.

The problem is that they’re immigrants who don’t know anything about laws or speaking English, and are trying to randomly sell mostly food on the streets. I’m not saying it’s right for the police to be that aggressive, but at the same time these stalls and vendors aren’t legitimate according to the standards of actually getting a license. But then again the same goes for a restaurant that also doesn’t pass an inspection or just has horrible sanitation issues. The only difference is that it’s not on the streets.

Street vendors make some of the best food you can find in many cities. (Gotta' experiment and find the best ones.) I've known friends whose entire family is supported by their street vendor business. In Portland, OR, just south of me, its gotten so difficult for people like this to ply their trade, and support their families. It's the street vendors that keep many companies employees in the city fed. And in turn, those employees support the street vendors - it's a mutually symbiotic relationship! These people deserve to be able to make their wonderful food and sell it to those who want to buy it!

@@01What10 There is plenty of real estate in this country for people to rent in order to prepare and sell food. Just watch "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives - we have more than enough restaurants in America to satisfy the demand for food. Sidewalks are meant for walking, not for operating a kitchen. Food cooked and prepared outdoors on the sidewalk without adequate access to toilets and sinks for the purpose of cleaning hands and utensils is a risk to public health. Also, people in America drive cars, so street food does is not in sync with our lifestyle.

My company has been blacklisted in the surrounding cities not for not having the proper requirements (I do custom for each city) but just because I’d take California business or facilitate food vending for Hispanics. Funny how my trailers will pass in ALL other 49 states everything as it should with everything they need but because they come from SÁNCHEZ TRAILERS in TX they are no good. You know what is even more sad, our street food would be incredible if they were just allowed to keep their carts and invest in upgrading them without fear of confiscation. Currently no one is willing to invest in their food cart and specialize it for what they want to make. They buy cheap store chips because getting a cart that they could use to make their own, fresh, is too much of a risk if it gets confiscated. Imagine if people were able to not worry and put as much money into their carts as they wanted. Imagine how incredible the food would be!

There’s gotta be a better way. I grew up with street vendors selling everything from giant pretzels to sausage bombs. At the same time, we gotta make sure food safety is in place. Where’s the middle ground? Permits and inspections while they work. Make the permits reasonable too.

I thoroughly enjoyed the content of this video because I did not know this situation until now. I am appalled at the law enforcement in Santa Monica for their actions. Those officers should be ashamed for what they are doing. I hope they pass a bill on the next election to stop the harassment and to better help with the licensing and permits for street vendors. The city charges too much!

I'm from Chicago where there's not as many street vendors and I hate that the ones in LA are getting penalized just cuz some cop is on a power trip. True Angelino cops support them.

If you visit, avoid the Santa Monica pier. If anything, but from the vendors, give them a huge tip, and go a couple miles north for better beaches.

Thank you for using your platform to highlight this issue; it is such a vital issue to be aware of. Very heartbreaking to see people being harassed and having to run from having their only means of income thrown away.

Street food is the best. It’s a shock that a place in California would be like this. Places in Texas you have to pay for a permit to have a yard sale. 🤔

As an owner of a food truck for over 30 years I've watched many videos of street vendors and there is one common denominator, every single time I see health code violations. These rules are there to protect public health

The next time you vote, think about the candidate that advocates to fix problems or the candidate who wants to get out of the way and let you fix your own problems. One persons “problem” can be another persons living. California has been “fixing” people’s problems for a while and now this is one of the results.

I remember 15 years ago 2007 right I remember coming to Coney Island in New York and I actually remember seeing Street vendors selling cotton candy and I got to buy some so even I know the importance of a street vendor. I'm glad to see that there are people who are fighting for their cause at least they're getting the help that they need and I hope no one will stop fighting for them because this is way too much it's gotten out of hand

They are forcing the city to waste three million on this plus not turning in sales tax for each item that they sell to avoid the sales tax.
