The Female Bare-Knuckle Prizefighters Of Georgian London | Fight Club | Absolute History

Actor Sean Bean narrates this four-part documentary, which focuses on the history of one-on-one combat and how people have used organised fighting - to gamble, aid diplomatic relations, settle scores and protect personal honour, for example - throughout the ages. Four eras of fighting are covered in the series - Victorian, Georgian, Elizabethan and Tudor - and each hour-long episode brings to life the duels, the pugilism and the fascination Britain has had with this grim form of entertainment. Witness the rise of female warriors, including Britain's first prizefighter superstar Elizabeth Wilkinson Stokes, plus the impact of Charles Dickens and the evolution of combat rules, marking a transformative era in London's tumultuous past.

Grew up watching my dad bare knuckle fight. By the time he was 40, he could hardly write. Lucky my mom was a nurse practitioner and I believe that kept him fighting longer than most. He passed away in 2021 from alcoholic cirrhosis. He wasnt a great dad most of the time but he was a good boxer.

I had no idea that women were involved in bare-knuckle boxing in Georgian London. It’s amazing how they defied the social norms and expectations of their time and fought for their own survival and dignity. I admire their courage and skill.

Women bare-knuckle street fighting for their survival and dignity? Errm, what they were doing was and is a total indignity for women. And lots of poor women survived without becoming a boxer or a prostitute. Particularly if they relied on God. There's no genuine excuse for certain professions.
