The Female Bare-Knuckle Prizefighters Of Georgian London | Fight Club | Absolute History
Actor Sean Bean narrates this four-part documentary, which focuses on the history of one-on-one combat and how people have used organised fighting - to gamble, aid diplomatic relations, settle scores and protect personal honour, for example - throughout the ages. Four eras of fighting are covered in the series - Victorian, Georgian, Elizabethan and Tudor - and each hour-long episode brings to life the duels, the pugilism and the fascination Britain has had with this grim form of entertainment. Witness the rise of female warriors, including Britain's first prizefighter superstar Elizabeth Wilkinson Stokes, plus the impact of Charles Dickens and the evolution of combat rules, marking a transformative era in London's tumultuous past.

Lol I just came to the comments after hitting the 44 min mark and thinking it was ending. Then I realized it was 3 hours. I ain't mad about it... but I am presently surprised.
The Georgian period was nuts, way out there in both social custom and in sports interest. Just about anything went!
That library is INCREDIBLE!❤
Grew up watching my dad bare knuckle fight. By the time he was 40, he could hardly write. Lucky my mom was a nurse practitioner and I believe that kept him fighting longer than most. He passed away in 2021 from alcoholic cirrhosis. He wasnt a great dad most of the time but he was a good boxer.
I would know that fellow Yorkshire accent anywhere! Mr Sean Bean, hello!😂✌️💜🇬🇧

Is that the great Sean Beans' Voice.
I had no idea that women were involved in bare-knuckle boxing in Georgian London. It’s amazing how they defied the social norms and expectations of their time and fought for their own survival and dignity. I admire their courage and skill.

Women bare-knuckle street fighting for their survival and dignity? Errm, what they were doing was and is a total indignity for women. And lots of poor women survived without becoming a boxer or a prostitute. Particularly if they relied on God. There's no genuine excuse for certain professions.

Ah, yeah, but if men defied societal norms.. How dare he? It looks special because it's women, but I bet one modern transwoman would crush them.
Excited for this!

History repeats itself if left unchecked...Great expansion and constant war existed all over the globe during the Georgian period and the gap between fabulous wealth and extreme poverty had never been wider --- until now!?!? Yikes.

Cecily Fay! Always love to see her crop up in documentary historical recreations.

I'm not surprised. There were female gladiators.
Could you add time stamps in the description so we know when each chapter starts?

Reminds me of Assassins Creed Syndicate where you can play as a woman and fight opponents.

The BBC series only first hour is about women.
The thing I 'love' about the 'UK', is that all the 'experts' are upper middle class with zero idea of poverty even through acquaintances. Don't they see the irony in this? Especially as we move towards Victorian (not Georgian times, yet) again?

@@willtubman6674he has a point. Female gladiators in ancient Rome were essentially considered goofy comedy acts to warm up the audience before the main show began, essentially making them antiquity's version of the Looney Tunes shorts that used to be played in cinemas ahead of the feature film.

After watching the 1st part of this documentary... I know you didn't watch even 15 minutes of it. It has absolutely nothing to do with the current wokeness. The name of this is called Fight Club.
