If anyone missed it, the song titles are all names of International military jet display teams. Blue Angels and Thunderbirds from the US, Red Arrows from the UK, Frecce Tricolori from Italy, Snowbirds from Canada, and Patrouille de France from France. ✈ Fearless flyers indeed.

Spacing
@jameswebster2605
3 ай бұрын
He sits right up on the beat, if you listen carefully to the snare he puts it just ahead of the hi hats, not enough so it’s on a different beat, but just enough to make it pop. Steve Gadd does the same thing. Dilla would create beats that did it to a ludicrous degree, but this is so subtle it’s hard to pick what it is if you don’t know what to look for. Hope that helps :)
@bailzzzzzz
3 ай бұрын
@@jameswebster2605feels to me like for the first couple of tracks the kick and snare are clockwork, with a really subtle drag on the hats. That dilla behind the beat 'drunk' thing is way more evident in track three, but do you think in the other tracks there's still a push or drag on the kick/snare? Interested to know, I'm not a drummer
@arthurmilano2920
3 ай бұрын
I feel like Nate’s style is to put most of his accenting notes in the ghost notes just outside of the 4 on floor beat, it’s perfectly peppered around. Much better sounding than somebody who just floods beats with unnecessary fills
@jas_bataille
3 ай бұрын
@@bailzzzzzz It feels square but it isn't. It like a hand drawn square with nice rounded edges VS a perfect 90 degree square like a metronome. Billie Jean is the best example of this : you think it's perfectly square. But I guarantee to you it's not even close. A Casio is perfectly square : there is the same exact spacing behind every beat. Sounds horrible. Only a robotic movement can have the same exact space between the hit and when you *lift* the stick, so drumming is like a dance! Any groove breathes. Pictures a swing : 4 on the floor only move the swing a little and it comes back quickly, but the spacing is not the same between every note. A swing feel is perfectly clearly showing that effect, and a J-Dilla beat is pushing it even further, to the point where the mechanism of the swing creaks and jam a little before going to the other beat. Does that make sense?! That's why it's called a backbeat when you the snare, and that's why swing is called... swing! You can make a physical movement reference for any beat. As a drum teacher this is my secret weapon lol
17:27 The first nerd to transcribe this solo deserves a medal. Nate Smith is the ace of aces.

This is so funky. Easily the grooviest FF album yet.
Great to see musicians at the top of their game, playing music that they themselves like.
Vulfpeck and these guys are the new ambassadors of funk music.
In tunderbirds the last track Marcs solo!!! 😮 i love how Joe stares at him the whole time almost in disbelief and laughing! Almost as if hes winging it and trying to find the right note or something, you can see the bewilderment in his face as joe just grins like a cheshire cat like GO IN THEN BROTHER! Then that last part where he stomps on the pedal and takes off! Oh my days what a performance
some of this are instant classics... but thunderbirds is one of those that grow on you, and they keep growing with each listen. Mark's solo on that one broke my brain i will never be the same

im convinced that you could give nate smith a rock and he’d use his drum wizardry to make that thing sound like a full kit, he is hands down one of the best to ever do it
Watching peoples heads snap back and forth at 6:00, going from the cool bass riff, to nates drumming, to the guitar lick, to nates solo, must have caused whiplash
Cory's eyebrow raise at the end of Snowbirds. The cat knows he nailed it!
I feel like the flyer's composition skill really shine in this album
21:54 to 22:08 WTF MAN?!! Just so damn funky Nate! Supporting solos like that wish such groove, funk, tension and release? Just masterclass and only one moment in time!! 👏👏👏
That is some black magic stuff from Cory Wong with that Patrouille de France solo.
