I personally diagnosed him with what I call 'Happily Ever After Disorder', which is a Protagonist specific form of PTSD. Symptoms: - Obsession over personally confronting conflicts (regardless of how unimportant or unrelated to him the conflict is) - Clings to consistency (Hence him insisting Lars and Sadie stay in Beach City) - No coping mechanism for small stress and emotional problems (as mentioned in Growing Pains. Likely because he's used to external conflicts or issues) - Depression (How lost he feels when he isn't helping someone else, which is the only thing that reminds him of his life before the end of the show. Steven is frankly an important case to understand the dangers of growing up as a protagonist and not a person: Once the Story ends he has no skills, no familiarity with the quiet moments in life so he's conditioned to seek conflict, to seek a problem to solve no matter how little he understands the problem nor how much people insist that he isn't needed in it. I personally wish I could enter this show just to cut the plot off at Growing Pains and take him straight to therapy.

So, I'm not transgender, but that moment where Steven was separated from his gem half by White Diamond and looked so ill before he finally embraced himself joyfully still hit me hard. I'm autistic and I grew up with a lot of anger, resentment, and outright denial over my condition due to a lot of bullying and gaslighting when I was growing up. I'd had relatives who denied my condition even existed, much like how White Diamond basically treats Steven like he's going through a "phase" he'll grow out of. I've even had people ask me if I could just try NOT being autistic. Then my whole life would be so much easier. Seeing Steven reconcile with his gem half felt so relatable to my struggles to reconcile with my autism and the fact it's not an accessory I have. It's me. :') I loved this damn show.

You have no way to know if they have a diagnosis or not (which they probably do btw, but as I said: you don’t know them, I don’t know them) so why do you assume they don’t have any? Besides the comment on top of me already said it, but gaslighting them after they’ve told you a lot of people in their life has been doing the same thing is just plain shitty. As someone who already got/gets gaslighted a lot, I can assure you that this do not make people’s mental health better. It makes you wonder if what you feel is actually true, or if you’re just lying for whatever reason your brain can think about (for attention, to put yourself as a victim and get people’s pity, etc). After that you start to question everything you feel, and you stop taking your legitimate problems seriously, thinking that you’re just getting offensed over nothing when it’s not the case. I genuinely can’t say how many times family members have been telling me, "You’re oversensitive" or "I never said/did that, you’re just imagining things" and now my mental health is fucked-up. That ended up way too long but c’mon, gaslighting is shitty in general and it’s even worse in this case.

@@carolcamara2387, since you seem like you were wondering, yes, I was diagnosed as a kid. Got shoved into a special ed class in 3rd grade with kids with things like celebral palsy, Down's Syndrome, etc. (because apparently all disorders and handicaps are the same, I guess *sarcasm*) that didn't actually help me but put a target on my back for neurotypical kids. It didn't help that my own teacher called me the R-word, on top of the other kids using it regularly. I tried disassociating myself from my condition for much of my teen years, thinking maybe the doctors made a mistake. When I graduated high school, I was struggling to find a job because (surprise) autistic people are terrible at job interviews. Shaking hands, looking people in the eye, nonverbal communication, etc. All of that disadvantaged me and I got demoralized enough to seek help from an organization that helps disabled people get jobs. I got an appointment with a psychologist or neurologist (I forget which) and he diagnosed me with Asperger Syndrome (this was before that diagnosis with merged into Autism Spectrum Disorder in 2013), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The second diagnosis was pretty freeing, actually. It erased a lot of doubts I'd had and I was able to actually get help finding work so I could live independently.

I adored future. It’s not a popular opinion, but as someone who has mental health issues very similar to Steven, I so appreciated how they handled ptsd. For those of you who didn’t like how the conflict ended with a hug, you’re missing what the characters conflicts were through future.Steven, while in his frantic state, had an issue accepted or asking for love, while the other characters already saw him so high on a pedestal that they didn’t push to show love when they noticed signs of his deterioration. The “hug” didn’t solve anything long term, but in that moment, it was about showing up and supporting someone who was looked over to the point of breakdown. So powerful.

@@bestofboth7707 And all that just went to Steven at the right time? "Right" for the plot, we alredy seen ptsd from past seasons where it was much better done, not only in way of reality, but also in the show itself making sense. In SU Future we don't even have a conclusion of this ptsd because of lazy writing, we also have this ptsd out of nowhere, unfinished arcs (Pink Pearl, etc), random new powers for Steven, no explanation to any remains, etc. Also, they made Steven stupid, here one example: Connie's plot part, she didn't say "No", she said "not now". And a lot of stuff, also, Steven almost kills his own dad and Greg's response is... "Well done kiddo"? They made everyone stupid, not only the diamonds, even Spinell... I agree that it wasn't as bad like Star's ending, but it was close. Also, i love how Rebbeca said "I didn't show Steven going through theraphy because it was an invasion of privacy" or something close to that, that's just lazy writing again. Again, people like Future because of "hitting" close to home, because they can relate. Or they just ignore the writing.

@@idk-ye7ur you can have whatever opinion you want, but please don’t make me feel bad for appreciating what the show did. Some of the things you said are right (diamonds and spinel being worse, unfinished arcs, etc) but some of the things you said were wrong. For one, his ptsd wasn’t out of nowhere. It’s a very complex disorder and can hit people at different stages of their life. Most often, ptsd symptoms show up when the person who experienced trauma has stopped fighting their battle, or exits the realm of being traumatized. For this, that’s exactly what future did. Steven has trauma in his life before, but it only got bad when he stopped working at the school, stopped fighting the diamonds, and finally had some down time for his brain to process. They didn’t nail everything, which I will again agree with. Lots of things were left open ended. Lots of things didn’t add up. What I’m saying however is that I appreciated how they dealt with his trauma, something I relate to very personally, which made me unable to help loving it. There’s bad, there’s good, and there’s ugly. There’s things that aren’t excusable with the disorder, ie shattering Jasper, the incident with the car, yelling at Connie, etc. But it’s realistic. Those things happen. I can certainly say they happened for me. And unless you are very educated about the disorder or have it, please don’t comment on what is or isn’t true to something you don’t know about. And if you do have it, why ruin somebody else’s connection to a character? It takes less to scroll by than to comment

@@bestofboth7707 Wut... I'm not forcing you to dislike the show, if you love it then go on, i'm just saying things from a writing point of view, hell, not even that, just being logical. You're taking things the wrong way, that's not my fault. If you like the character, that's okay, since when did i said something wrong or forced you to dislike the show? If you like it, then keep linking it, wtf. Now, going back to the topic, technically the show didn't do that well, i don't have ptsd, but i can still study it and i did go through toxic problems and enviroments, i'm not talking just for talking. They have shown in the past better ptsd arcs. Here a better point of the problem, if you're going to put ptsd may as well make it work with the story, SUF fails with that because of the alredy established characters and worldbuilding, making no sense. Here some examples》Steven's ptsd goes and comes with his new powers. Wait, where did those new powers come from? Oh, "plot" and out of nowhere, early Steven at least makes more sense than now. Also, having ptsd does not makes you deaf, Spinell's character makes no sense in SUF and she has ptsd, Greg's reaction, etc. Also, there's no conclusion... They skip things and ended the season with a hug, that's not a good way to show ptsd.

Pink Diamond/Rose's problem was she was a person who had a wildly disproportionate amount of power and authority compared to her maturity and ethical understanding. It *is* telling that she constantly strove to be a better person, and *did* do better, but ultimately, it doesn't mean she *didn't* do truly terrible, awful things, and that Steven doesn't deserve to have to deal with them. This whole show felt like it was great at building up arcs and storylines, but can easily mess up in execution a lot. The only arcs that I felt worked completely from beginning to end was the Jailbreak arc and the Zoo arc. Change Your Mind just emphasized how much this show could fail at wrapping up arcs, mostly because of how rushed it all felt. I wonder how different this show would be if it had a 22-minute runtime instead. Future seemed to tackle the loose ends of the rushed arcs, with many of the episodes focusing on characters that were a bit overlooked. The others have a new arc with Steven’s mental health, but it ironically falls at the end. A poetically perfect way to say goodbye to the series.

I have ptsd and I'm surprised you didn't meantion this more when talking about pink steven. It looks like a visual manifestation of being "triggered", where even though I have a reason for getting mad or upset, I go from like 6 to 11 immediately and it's really intense for everyone. And even though I got ptsd from "being too nice" and staying in bad situations for too long, now sometimes it's hard to face some of the things I've done when I'm triggered and get "too" upset. I've never physically hurt anyone, but it's still a hard thing to have to reconcile.

For people who are dissappointed that we never got to see Steven's Road to Recovery apart from "he's seeing a therapist now" in the last episode: The Road to Recovery for some people can take their entire lives. As someone with childhood trauma, you only learn to deal with it better, it never truly goes away even with years of therapy. I'm content with this because there is no realistic scenario where anyone with any kind of PTSD or trauma is completely 100% "cured". The best we can do is keep on moving and do our best to work on ourselves, sometimes with the help of a therapist if necessary. This is exactly what steven does and I fucking love the show for it. He's out there, somewhere...discovering himself, learning to deal with things and discovering the beauty of life all over again as his own person, with all the ups and downs that entails. We don't have to see that journey because it might never end. Also rebecca sugar said she wanted to "set steven free" at the end. I think this is what she meant. I still relapse and get nightmares about my trauma even though I've gone to therapy for a while and dealt with most stuff but shows like Steven Universe remind me why I chose to keep living. To experience stories and experiences as brilliant as Steven Universe, that give me such an incredible amount of hope and inspire me to create.

I personally disagree with this notion that "all of the show's critics are just jumping on the hate train (or the "hate dogpile, as you've put it) and doing it for views and attention." Most of the people I've seen criticize SU are actually former fans that loved it in it's earlier seasons and believe the show decreased in quality during its later seasons. Yes, some of the hate is overblown, there's no denying that. But many of the common points of criticism against this show are actually quite valid and reasonable, and I think the fanbase needs to stop treating critics like they're the bad guys. Yes, I’m sick of people dropping points from their overall rating for the show because kaiju Steven never had an epic battle or because the show didn’t explain every little thing about who White Diamond is and how she changed so quickly. If the failure of the Han Solo movie taught us anything, outside of management drama, it’s that fans don’t actually want a rational explanation to things that were previously only implied or referenced; you have to leave room for imagination.

The entire point of the climax is about emotional sincerity. Anyone who calls it cheesy or stupid is not engaging with it. And again, his monster form was not a direct threat, just a potential one. The rest of the characters cared more about getting him back to his human self than "defeating" him. Maybe they understood all of these things and still found it cheesy, but I think that even if one didn't connect with that climax emotionally, it's still a good piece of writing that shows how Steven's compassion and love for his family/friends payed off, as they were there for him just like how he was there for them.

  • @CreepECrawlyMan

    @CreepECrawlyMan

My issue with Monster Steven is that it’s ironically one of the few moments in the series in which we don’t actually follow Steven’s POV....during the one time it would have been interesting to see his perspective while he’s acting like a monster. We focus on everything which falls into the problem of everyone crying and sobbing over how much they fucked up in not caring about Steven’s suffering. Which....yeah....that’s the issue! Like the comment I made before, the characters are written to be complete ignorant and passive over Steven’s plight and ONLY engage with him until he’s gotten worse. Even Connie, despite her speech, isn’t any better because in the episode where Steven tries to propose to her, she just leaves because her 15 minutes are up. I get she’s got school to worry about but her boyfriend is literally going through a mental breakdown; she could hold off her studying for something more important than that. The Diamonds of course are the sole exception since they’re pretty one-dimensional anyway and literally could not have shown up at all. So it comes off as everyone coming in way too late to engage with Steven and shift things from “Steven feels like a monster because of how he acted and what he’s done” and became “Everyone didn’t think about his feelings until too late and decide to coddle and hug him to calm him down”. I don’t even feel like they seemingly understand the feelings Steven was going through and thus the hug feels disarmingly shallow.

I actually really liked the ending it was truly a more heartfelt moment of acceptance of who he is and him finally setting out on his own own path and finally ending his adventure where as he says his last goodbyes to the crystal gems to me is kinda heartbreaking cuz after years of watching this show you start to realize its know comeing to a end but yet a happy end where Steven can make his own path instead of mainly being in his moms path to fix her mistakes, and those hugs at the end just shows how much he has developed and how all the characters that he had influenced developed and how they have seemed to accept, love and care for him in his time of need, and that the crystal gems do understand that he is leaving but trys to hold back there tears to make him not feel like hes makeing a bad decision to leave and embark on his own journey to find who he truly is and what he wants to do and feel like there holding him back, but as Steven cant take that they arnt seeming sad about him leaving it kinda makes him scared or sad? (Idk the correct word) so he turns around where as then its ended with a hug and tears. But that's just my view on it idk a out the rest of y'all :>

Ok so, I was washing the bathroom today, and I have a little tradition where I listen to one of Cellspex’s videos while I clean. I was planning to just listen to an older episode, but lo and behold, she’d finally posted a new one, and it’s about Steven. I could go on and on about Cellspex’s summary in this video, my feelings on this show and how it ended, or even my thoughts on possible spinoffs. But I think I want to focus on why it means so much to me. I discovered SU years ago when I played “Attack the Light” on my phone. I was a new summer camp counselor and I wanted something fun to play on the app store. I knew nothing about the show, but the game seemed cool so I downloaded it. Then I checked out clips of the show on KZread. And I was hooked. I bought episodes on iTunes and every break I had, I drove to McDonalds and watched them. The show got me through a difficult time in my life, and the more I saw, the more I fell in love. The thing is...if I’m being honest, there are themes in SU that conflict with my personal religious and worldview beliefs. But even so, I kept coming back. And I realized that the reason was the show’s overall message regarding redemption. No matter how bad a person is, they can be forgiven, and they can grow. I know people give the show flack for this, but it really meant a lot to me. I’ll just drop the bomb now: I’m an evangelical Christian. Part of my belief system is that anyone can be redeemed and forgiven of their sins. And it really touched my heart how often Steven was willing to forgive even the worst people and bring the best out of them, which is what I believe Jesus does. Now I don’t believe Steven is Jesus, but I agree with Cellspex that there are parallels. Anyway...I love this show. I love these flawed but growing characters. I love the music, I love the art, I love the sci-fi aspects. I love Steven Universe and feel very blessed that I got to experience it.

I really like SU Fututre. A lot of the themes and ideas hit a little too close to home so I was consistently devastated and that’s great. Since the show is about empathy and love and overcoming trauma, it made sense to me that the final arc is about letting the emotional center of the story get back the emotional effort he’s put in. He put a lot of effort into helping his family and friends become more balanced, happy people, and they are going to do the same for him if it kills them. I like that Steven’s a stubborn brat whose impulses are getting the better of him bc the coping mechanisms that kept him alive before are backfiring on him and he doesn’t know what to do about. I just like Future a lot, even if it’s not perfect. I like the whole show, flaws and all. The finale is one of my favorite episodes, bc I don’t mind that White Diamond’s ‘redemption’ is rushed. It’s not a redemption, it’s a chance. WD is your grandma whose always made fun of you for being chubby and says all the queers go to hell. So to me, the finale is going ‘hey I love you but I’m exactly the person you talk shit about, could you please maybe listen to me instead of never talking to me again?’ And then they DO. It’s a show about acceptance, so the finale is the fantasy that even your worst relative will accept you, and I think that’s very rad.

It's basically like growing up being told how gifted you are and how you're going to do big things...always being thrust into the forefront of people's expectations and attention whether you wanted to or not? Yeah. It touched some close to home territory for me. Sadly, I didn't get to feel right with myself until I was much, much older than Steven was. It's got it's flaws. I'm a little saddened the show ends with Steven not reconciling his feelings regarding his mother though. She was just as flawed as him. If Steven found out gems he barely knew were putting him on a pedestal and construing some of his low moments as something toer than what they were, I bet he'd have a problem with it when the truth is so much murkier. I imagine for Pink/Rose, it was the same exact thing.

I was going through the brute force of depression and beginning to seek help and therapy during the airing of Steven Universe future. I honestly have trouble going back to watch it, because the final season just stirs up a lot of difficult emotions and reminds me of how helpless and hopeless I was feeling. Steven Universe came out when I was in middle school, and so I grew up with Steven the way many grew up with Harry Potter. It was one of the shows that helped me realize I wanted to work in animation. Steven Universe Future felt so personal to me, and it made me cry to see how much he was suffering. But it made me feel heard. I wasn’t the only one suffering. Even a magical boy with extraordinary powers could feel just as helpless as me. Steven Universe helped me accept my bisexuality. It helped me become passionate about art. It helped me learn to embrace empathy and diplomacy. And while the show wasn’t always perfect, it will always be very dear to me.

Future was one of my favorite seasons because of how relatable it was for me. I usually am the person trying to help everyone I can, adding problem after problem onto my list, without ever taking a moment to focus on myself. A problem with me is that when I start helping someone with a mental health issue for example, I get in this overly selfless mindset where the only person that matters is the one I'm helping, and I matter least. It led to a LOT of problems earlier this year that this season touched on, every episode surprising me with how relatable it was. While I still struggle with that too-selfless mindset right now, I am beginning to learn to balance my mental health while helping others(').

To me, Steven Universe Future was a sign that Steven would have to leave eventually and eventually end, the kid had already been through a lot of trauma growing up in a supernatural environment to the point that certain things that he would need, like healthy relationships and environments, those went out of the window for him. If he continued to stay he wouldn't be able to find himself as a human, in fact he would continue to suffer. He would need time to grow out of that, and staying in Beach City just wouldn't make that happen.

It’s not that he accepted his Diamond half, he was happy that he was himself. He had been under a constant deluge of visions, thoughts, and feelings of Pink Diamond, to the point where he wonders if he was his actual self. Him hugging himself was just acceptance of himself. Note how Pink Steven was completely emotionless until Steven touched him. The metaphorical meaning of all of that was on whether a child can ever really be anybody else but their parents child, and there’s a whole load of psychological baggage that comes with that thought. Trust me. I’ve felt that, and still feel that to this day.

I think it was because the whole time, his stressed transformation was partly due to the fact that he didn’t want people seeing his “bad side.” His family then saw Steven let loose and rampage, turning into a literal monster and they didn’t abandon him- they went to help, even when he was at his worst. Beforehand, he was still convincing himself that “everything was fine.”

  • @isaacjohnson8796

@@Phasmania Steven only convinced himself he was fine after he realized what he was doing was wrong and the attempts others made to help him weren't making him feel better. There are multiple times he reaches out for help in the story and it seems like he's making some sort of progress or has learned that he has a shoulder to lean on but either doesn't utilize these people in his life (like Peridot, Amethyst, or Pearl) or the advice he receives doesn't help him (the Diamonds, Greg, or Garnet). I think you're partially right that after he shattered Jasper Steven may have wanted to cover his tracks and convince himself he was fine and felt uncomfortable confessing his newfound issues to someone but even before that there are plenty of times gems or people try to help him or Steven tries to ask for help but nothing comes of it.

  • @Phasmania

@@isaacjohnson8796 Well things weren’t that bad before the Jasper incident. When Connie suggests to send Steven to a doctor in “Growing Pains,” he consistently says things like “I would just waste your time,” and similarly, with Peridot- he doesn’t tell her that these dreams are negatively affecting him until Peridot sees it for herself. He is thrown into situations where regardless of reaching out for help, he feels shunned or abandoned. (Situation with Lars/Sadie, Connie’s rejection, quitting Little Homeschool, etc.) He never strictly asks for help, just kind of consults his family then pushes them away. He does this consistently, and he tries to resist the hug at first in the final battle. For many people with mental illnesses, talking about them directly with people is very difficult. He even says “Its not that easy” in Everything’s Fine. It’s not a surprise that this kid who has known nothing but helping others and little of self-help can’t talk about his problems very easily.

@@Phasmania "just kind of consults his family then pushes them away" That's basically what I'm saying lol. He goes to his family, doesn't get the response he wants/needs, than pushes them away. I mean his monster hug moment was basically the same as his peridot interaction, where he's forced to lay most of his problems out to her, with peridot responding by helping Steven, just like Steven explaining his problems to the crystal gems before turning into a monster and receiving a hug. I mean obviously he didn't lay everything out to peridot or Connie/Connie's mom during their episode but he didn't explain everything before he turned into a monster either. It's a constant cycle of explaining problems, seeing he has a family willing to help him through his problems, and regressing as more issues and traumas surface leading to him becoming a monster where this cycle is broken by Steven realizing he has a family willing to help him (which is apart of the cycle if you couldn't pick up).

I think something worth noting is: Steven didn't completely forgive the Diamonds. He's cold to them in the movie, and in Future, there are signs of ptsd due to abuse. For example, especially for White, he flinches when they get close. He also actually shouts at White saying that she's actually awful, which is warranted. "I don't wanna be you! I don't wanna be anything *_like_* you!" And "This is for everything you put me through!" Really sell this. I don't know why people say Steven forgave the Diamonds at all, when he really didn't.

Thank you for covering Future in a fair and unbiased manner Cell. You have no idea how tiring it is to see fans bash it because it didn't give them what they wanted or some other petty thing. I don't think Steven Universe as a whole is perfect and there is a thread of truth in that it rushes its conclusions (mostly IMO because it prefers emotional logic as opposed to straight logic), though a lot of that is down to the studio interfering/cutting budgets yada yada yada. It's a flawed gem. *Ba dum tish*. I hope it continues some day.

I waited until the finale to watch the whole miniseries in one sitting and as it was going I started noticing that's some of the things Stevens gone through I things I've gone through. But it wasn't until the very end that it really hit me, and I really appreciate how this whole thing has been put together.

I love this video, it expressed all the feelings I have for this show in ways I couldn't articulate, and it expanded my thinking towards the show by discussing things I hadn't thought of before. A fantastic analyses, I can't wait to share this video with my friend after we finish watching both series together!
