Rented a plate packer and ran out of diesel. Rental company said that the whole fuel system has to come apart to get the engine started again. Tried this trick and started immediately. Saved myself several hundred $$ in “repairs” by the rental company! Thank you for this video!

Tried this method on my Kubota MX5200 as a last ditch effort before disassembling the tractor to access the injectors. Had to use a little starting fluid in combination with the fuel spray bottle but it worked long enough for the injector pump to purge the air from the fuel system.... thanks for the great idea. mardyn

Thank you very much for sharing! Worked great on a forklift I changed fuel filters on and lost all pressure to the fuel system. Even after filling the filters with diesel and trying starting fluid it wouldn’t start. This worked after I took the intake tube and sprayed diesel down the intake with the spray bottle. Also full fuel tank and charges batteries make a huge difference!

Thank you for sharing this video - it was a real life saver. After 3 days of failed attempts to get my old Ford Backhoe running I was pulling my hair out, but this did the trick. I did find it easier to use a portable air compressor and a 'spray gun' usually used for cleaning - but filled with diesel it put out a fine spray, and I was able to keep the engine running for approx. a minute until the air was bled from the system, and it has been running since.

Well that does look a shortcut, but it must depend somewhat on how much air is in the system, there is only so much the engine can pull to clear all the voids. This looks like a good thing to try after getting rid of most of the air, and pull the rest through.

I've been cussing my 1840 out all afternoon. The only good thing is that if ran out of fuel in my shop. 38 and raining here in Iowa today so at least I was working out of the rain. I've bled it half a dozen times, sacrificed at least one 14mm wrench to the black hole, ran the battery dead and it's still not showing any signs of life. If this method works for me tomorrow I am driving to your house and giving you a big man hug.

My first attempt, using your trick on my IH 364, didn't work. Removing the air cleaner still left a long tube to the intake. No diesel mist reached the engine. After removing the hood and air intake hose between the air cleaner and engine, the engine started. It seems you have to be very close to the engine intake for it to work. It does take 2 people, but is a tremendous time-saver.

Nice trick! I wish I would've known about this trick when I ran my 2001 dodge ram 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins out of fuel. The fuel guage was reading 1/8 of a tank so at the time I didn't realize it was actually out of fuel. After a shop charged me $2300 to change out the injection pump, I once again ran out of fuel thinking the guage was accurate and that's when I finally put 2 and 2 together.

I followed your advice in starting up our Ford 420 tractor after the fuel pump was rebuilt. Like a number of other commenters on this video, I had to use some ether to initially get it going. I sprayed shorts bursts of ether and diesel alternately until it took off. I'm not sure why the diesel alone did not work (I tried this first). Do you know why the diesel alone would not do it?--Thanks for this video!

  • @carquestions

TS - I think the intake tract of some diesels is shaped in such a way that little spray gets to the cylinder - the ether is more atomized and explosive so it does make it in - but you don't want to keep spraying it any longer than you have to. Cheers from Canada!

Shouldn't use either. The diesel should be fine. Might want to wipe it done inside after your done to prevent debris from collecting in the system. Ether can really damage your diesel engine. A lot of diesel engines tend to have issues that stem from improper use causing wet stacking to the exhaust system. You typically want to use them at a minimum of 60% torque ratio. Even if you don't have a dpf your engine still needs to meet this. If your engine is running in idle for more than 10 minutes you are hurting it. This will lead to the exhaust to start to back up in the system, and you'll notice the soot building in your pipes when you remove the exhaust from the manifold. It with make its way more in-depth, and start breaking down the system. Not all ports of your glow plugs are large enough to get a borescope into, but if you can get one in there you can start to realise the damage that is being done.

WD40 is easier on the engine than starting fluid. Key to it is easy on the fluid. Another way is to take cheese cloth and spray a small amount of gasoline on it while the rag is covering the intake opening. Only gas vapor will be drawn in. Learned that 40years ago from an old time heavy equipment field mechanic. Used this method many times over 4 decades with no issues.

The fuel systems are supposed to be self priming to some extent but most don't do it it well at cranking speeds - if you can get the engine running at higher speeds and for a couple of minutes then the fuel pump most times will suck in enough fuel and purge the air itself and you're off to the races

You got away with it because it's an old indirect injection non-turbo. Do that on a modern common rail, you might hydro lock the engine = busted piston or bent rod, or burn up high pressure pump due to no lubrication.

does it hurt the turbo? or supposed to unhook stuff and go on back side of it? my 6.5 Detroit is not running more than five seconds has relocated Pmd, new filters, screen, lift pump, purged return line to bubble thru tank, no explanation other than bad IP. but runs great when it starts for five seconds then stall and wait few hours starts again. if your idea keeps it running then I have a fuel problem, not an IP prob....I was ready to order IP until this video. I tried this myself and still stalled, but when I get a second person to crank, going to try again, here's to hoping. but I can't spray before the turbo? it's ez to spray in with air filter removed, but needs some tools involved if have to avoid turbo

Terrible idea. A diesel is supposed to have hot compressed air and be timed by the start of injection. This is providing fuel and letting it ignite whenever compression is high enough. No control over timing. Easier way - crack your bleeder, take the fuel return line off somewhere, crack the bleeder and shoot a small amount of compressed air into the tank return fitting with a portable tank and a blow gun, then put your finger over it. Not a lot, just enough that there is a small amount of residual pressure in the tank. Too much and you can rupture the tank. Keep going until steady fuel comes out of the bleeder, then tighten the bleeder and hook the vent back up. If you didn't crank it too much and get air in the injector hard lines it will probably fire instantly.
