The fascinating history of wigs in Africa - BBC Africa

Wigs have been present in African society for centuries and, for almost as long, the relationship between black people and wigs has been complicated.
But where did it all begin, and how are opinions changing in today’s society?

When the young lady said "there are some places that you can not take your natural hair... Artificial hair will make you more beautiful" how heartbreaking, to view your hair as unworthy and not beautiful enough for any and every place or occasion. It is this very colonial mentality that leads young African ladies to buying wigs and straightening their hair in order to be regarded as competent or beautiful. Wigs are not bad, when worn with the right mentality.

It's because black culture made natural hair poverty. Same thing with the rest of American culture if you weren't born with it you get it to look rich. Example: 1)Small lips - Big lips 2)Big lips - Small lips 3)Curly hair - Straight hair 4)Straight hair - Curly hair 5)White Skin - Tan Skin 6)Dark Skin - Light Skin 7)Natural Beauty - Makeup 8)Small Physical assets - Big ones 9)Big Physical assets - Small ones 10)Common Clothes - Fancy Clothes 11)Human Odor - Perfume 12) Fat - Skinny 13)Old - Young And The Beauty Standards Go On For Every Race And Culture. 🙄

@@65150s that is beautiful. I am over age 40 and I wear my natural hair as well, and I do notice it’s fragile . So what I do is moisturize my hair and oil and massage my scalp. I two strand and Or three strand brand my hair. I wear it under a beautiful head wrap or a wig from time to time. My hair at my age has changed so I protect it more now. People can judge me for wearing headwraps , hats, or wigs . I don’t care because people that know me at work and in my family have seen my natural hair and say they seen me wear it with pride. But now I have to protect it or shave it all off.

From my own personal observation, I tend to find that women who embrace and rock their natural hair tend to have higher self esteem when compared to wig wearers. Now I'm not trying to tear anyone down but it's just my personal observation which could be biased since I'm a natural myself. But what I can say for sure is that hair really has a huge impact on us black woman, more than we care to admit

I wear wigs because i have a medical condition that took out my natural hair and I’m more insecure without my hair and I feel more secure with a wig on. I think it’s disgusting for anybody especially a man to tell a woman what to do with her own head. We trade goods and services with other countries all the time so there’s nothing wrong with buying wigs from other races of people but let’s be clear black women make their own wigs. Did you people not watch the video? That black woman was making and selling her own wigs. But even still people will judge you for wearing a wig if you made the damn thing yourself smh at the end of the day keep your mouth shut about what a black woman chooses to do with her hair! Obviously black men and other men love it because a woman with a wig on will get more attention then a woman wearing her natural hair. Wigs have been around since the beginning of time and you people still act like people just started wearing wigs smh the ignorance in these comments are amazing and how you try to sugar coat your ignorance is disgusting! The assumption that everyone who wears a wig hates their natural hair is yet another situation where [Black] judge quickly without the facts. Just like assuming that someone who chooses not to marry or have kids has issues...etc. People will have something to say no matter what you do. Newsflash: ALOPECIA is real and not something anyone chooses to suffer from. So I will not walk about with unsightly bald patches in the name of trying to prove that I'm proud of my natural hair. The bald look is not for me either. So wigs are my SOLUTION and peace of mind. Even white and Asian women wear wigs and extensions so stop putting down Black women who do. If it's not your preference, jog on! - Live and let live. I love my natural hair and miss not being able to wear it out any more. So I mainly go for wig textures that mimic afro hair... but will rock whatever I feel good in too. 💃🏾❤

By the way it's good your wigs are afro, cos Caucasians wear wigs but don't try to imitate other races the way our women try to imitate Caucasians. You may not know me, but I know everything about you (Psalm 139:1). I know when you sit down and when you rise up (Psalm 139:2). I am familiar with all of your ways (Psalm 139:3). Even the very hairs on your head are numbered (Matthew 10:29-31). For you were made in my image (Genesis 1:27). In me you live and move and have your being (Acts 17:28). For you are my offspring (Acts 17:28). I knew you even before you were conceived (Jeremiah 1:4-5). I chose you when I planned creation (Ephesians 1:11-12). You were not a mistake, for all your days are written in my book (Psalm 139:15-16). I determined the exact time of your birth and where you would live (Acts 17:26). You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). I knit you together in your mother's womb (Psalm 139:13) and brought you forth on the day that you were born (Psalm 71:6). I have been misrepresented by those who don't know me (John 8:41-44). I am not distant and angry, but am the complete expression of love (1 John 4:16). And it is my desire to lavish my love on you (1 John 3:1) simply because you are my child and I am your Father (1 John 3:1). I offer you more than your earthly father ever could (Matthew 7:11). I am the perfect Father (Matthew 5:48). Every good gift that you receive comes from my hand (James 1:17). For I am your provider and I meet all of your needs (Matthew 6:31-33). My plan for your future has always been filled with hope (Jeremiah 29:11) because I love you with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3). My thoughts towards you are countless as the sand on the seashore (Psalm 139:17-18). I rejoice over you with singing (Zephaniah 3:17). I will never stop doing good to you (Jeremiah 32:40). For you are my treasured possession (Exodus 19:5). I desire to establish you with all of my heart and all of my soul (Jeremiah 32:41) and I want to show you great and marvelous things (Jeremiah 33:3). If you seek me with all of your heart, you will find me (Deuteronomy 4:29). Delight in me and I will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). For it is I who gave you those desires (Philippians 2:13). I am able to do more for you than you could possibly imagine (Ephesians 3:20). For I am your greatest encourager (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17). I am also the Father who comforts you in all of your troubles (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). When you are brokenhearted, I am close to you (Psalm 34:18). As a shepherd carries a lamb, I have carried you close to my heart (Isaiah 40:11). I will wipe away every tear from your eyes (Revelation 21:3-4) and I will take away all of the pain you have suffered on this earth (Revelation 21:3-4). I am your Father, and I love you (John 17:23). My love for you is revealed in Jesus (John 17:26). I am for you, not against you (Romans 8:31). He died so that you and I could be reconciled (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). He died so that righteousness could live in and through you (2 Corinthians 5:21) as well as to take away your sins (John 8:36). I do this by putting my spirit within you and through my spirit, you live righteously (Ezekiel 11:19-21). Jesus' death was the ultimate expression of my love for you (1 John 4:10). I gave up everything I loved that I might gain your love (Romans 8:31-32). If you receive the gift of my Son Jesus, you receive me (1 John 2:23). No one and nothing can separate you from me, as long as you abide in me (Romans 8:38-39). A huge party is thrown in Heaven for each one of you who repents for your sins and believes in me (Luke 15:7). I am your Father (Ephesians 3:14-15). My question is… Will you be my child (John 1:12-13)? I'm waiting for you (Luke 15:11-32). Believe in Jesus, study and believe His Word - the New Testament, and be baptized (Matthew 28:18-20, John 5:24). ❤️

Not braid wigs or 3d lace human hair wigs. I like the 4c hair wigs. I suck styling my hair in any style that's not natural so a wig is my solution vs $200 for a salon

I believe black men are waking up and realizing that these wigs do not originate from our women. The modern wigs today come from India, Malaysia, Cambodia, and China. The point I'm trying to establish is do you really see African women shaving their heads bald and reselling their hair on a global Mass scale to the world? No..

Right! People are making it out to look like only black women wear wigs and that’s incorrect! White women are the ones who brought wigs and hair extensions to the West! They still wear those things as of today! They are the biggest buyer of wigs and hair extensions! I love wearing wigs and nothing nobody says will make me change my mind about wearing them because I know my history and the history of wigs! I also have a medical problem that took out my hair and previous to that happening I still wore hair extensions and wigs because you can do many more styles then just with your natural hair. Nobody should be telling anybody what to do with their hair. People really should just keep their mouth shut!
