THE FANTASY ART OF ARTHUR RACKHAM

I've been a huge admirer of Arthur Rackham's work ever since I first encountered it in my late teens.
And although he's featured briefly in other videos I figured he was worth a video to himself.
This isn't any kind of biography but more a review of what I think are highlights from his long career.
If you want to see more there are many books and a massive web presence.

    Rackham was the first artist I saw as a child that made my brain dance. I would look at his illustrations for hours and think "how does he do that?" Everything was so unreal, and so stunningly lifelike - my little mind could barely take it. His hands have a personality all their own.

    My favorite book as a child was '''Wind in the Willows'' which was the Arthur Rackham illustrated edition. When I first started my illustrated book collecting I started with Rackham's works and was always impressed with his line work and expressive renderings. The Siegfried legends are worthy of any art gallery expo. I have seen modern gallery sales of his originals now priced in the stratosphere. Pete Beard once again does his duty and delivers a fascinating and informative look at a great illustrator. I've been a fan of Rackham even since I read his Alice book back in elementary school and it is fascinating how influential he still is, which may be why his illustrations has aged so well. Two current illustrators that I immediately spotted his influence in is Keith Thompson and Tony diTerlizzi.

    Thank you. This brought back many memories of being read to by my grandmother, and eventually reading on my own, many books and tales. I instantly remembered the art work and how fascinated I was with each drawing. I miss books with illustrations such as his. I do not believe anyone prints such beautiful art in their novels, short stories, and tall tales today. I wish they did for these illustrations brought so much more to each story. One could actually see what the author had in mind when writing.

    Hello and thanks for your comments and favourable reponse to the channel. The Dulac/McCay connection is interesting but sadly unlikely. McCay was a couple of decades older than Dulac, but I agree that there are common threads between them as there are with many of the fantasy based illustrators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They all wanted to create impossible worlds of great beauty.

  • @petebeard

    @petebeard

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello again and I've been lucky enough to see a couple of original Rackham paintings in my time, and what you refer to as a blurred effect is undoubtedly and unfortunately the consequence of relatively imprecise full colour printing, and the fact that most of what is shown is not only taken from the printed versions but has also been scanned for digital display by people who are frequently not up to the task. It's not ideal but it's better than not seeing them at all as most of his originals are in the hands of private collectors.

    My grandmother came here from Sweden. She taught me to read when I was five, in English and Swedish. Every children's book of hers that I remember had this style of illustration. I recognize the Alice in Wonderland book illustrated by Rackham and remember his goblin book, too, and there may have been others. Most of the children's books my grandmother gave me to read were grim, indeed - or maybe these are just the ones that got imprinted on my mind... trolls under bridges, gargoyle-looking goblins, children abducted and eaten by monsters... all kinds of strange and threatening worlds. And yet, beautiful in an ugly way. The creepy illustrations always seemed more alive than conventional illustrations in children's books I'd find in the library, for example. As an adult, I spent most of my working life as a reporter and took my own B&W photos (and for a long time, developed and printed them, myself). I got pretty good at capturing a sense of people and situations in their complicated and sometimes not so lovely aspects. Oddly enough, people usually liked their "complicated" portraits - faces full of wrinkles and etched with shadows and set in busy or stark backgrounds also full of shadows -- and sometimes I'd run into a friend or relation of my subject who would exclaim over how I'd captured the person's true nature! Hmmmmm. I have to wonder if being exposed to "ugly" fantasy images like Rackham's from such a young age (although some are also quite beautiful and angelic) shaped the way I see people and things, which was then reflected in my photographs? (I also took a lot of almost documentary-style photos beginning when I was 8 and my mother gave me an Agfa camera.) During this pandemic, I am forced to stay by myself in my home pretty much 24/7 because of health issues. In order to not go insane, I've been re-discovering areas that I was always interested in but let fall by the wayside when I was working 50-60 hour weeks (which contributed to my health issues, by the way -- little sleep and a lot of unhealthy eating and ridiculous levels of stress). So now I am drawing and painting and making collages that are full of imaginary worlds and populated by wise animals and teeny froglike aliens and giant insects, monsterous adults, creepy fish, children shooting lasers from their chests and so on... all probably inspired at their root by these books of my grandmother's! (And 10 months of isolation!)

    Hello to you and thanks for your absorbing comment. Rackham is easily one of the most profoundly influential illustrators of all time and that there isn't a Rackham museum in Britain is a disgrace. But I'm glad to hear that your own childrens stories and pictures are helping you through these wretched times. I just had my first vaccination and when I've had the second I'll be making up for lost time, which at my age I can ill afford. Keep drawing!

    @@petebeard I don't know how old you are but I am 66 and much to my surprise, this pandemic has ended up having its silver lining because I am not really allowed to go anywhere, so I have more freedom in many ways and much more unscheduled time than I've ever had in my entire life... luckily, I also got rid of a toxic boyfriend a few months before the pandemic began, so I didn't get stuck having to quarantine with him! Just a heads up about the vaccine -- my sister and a couple of friends who work in the healthcare field have had both of their shots now and they all got flu-like yucky symptoms after the second one, which means the vaccine is working because the immune system kicked in. They all felt better after about 3 days. So, it's good to prepare for that, like have some cans of soup on hand and saltine crackers, and Tylenol or aspirin for the aches and pains, and lots of things to drink (of course, water is best). I am looking forward to being able to see my friends in person sometime soon - I am in the next phase, so probably in about a month or so. BTW, I shared your KZread channel and this video in particular in a Facebook group of local artists that I was invited to join a few months ago, after sharing my artwork on my own page. The folks in this group live in or around my town, so I have made several new "virtual" friends that I look forward to meeting in person one day. (We have Zoom get togethers, now.) They really liked your Rackham video and I hope they enjoy some of your others. I know that I will be watching some. Thank you!
