The Fantastic Powers of Hades and Persephone

Queen of the Dead is a pretty cool title though. Hades used an invisibility *helmet, not a shield.
Hosted by Dr. Moiya McTier & Dr. Emily Zarka, FATE & FABLED explores the stories and characters of mythologies from all around the world - why they came to be and how they impact us still today.
Fate & Fabled is produced by Spotzen for PBS Digital Studios.

I personally love Hades and Persephone more than other Greek Gods. At least in the version I know in general, they don't do many bad things to mortals like the Mythological Nightmare that is known as the Olympians, and Persephone shares equal power and authority with Hades. They never cheat on each other.

The Andorran progressive death metal band Persefone's second album Core is a concept album all about the story of Persephone. The Swedish progressive metal band Opeth has a song called Persephone too. And not about Persephone: Symphony X tackle a lot of mythological themes in their music. A lot of their albums are concept albums based on classic texts like Paradise Lost and The Odyssey. Haken have a few songs from their album The Mountain that are inspired by mythology. Atlas Stone obviously being about Atlas, and Falling Back To Earth has references to Icarus. Periphery have a couple songs inspired by Icarus too. Icarus Lives is the obvious one, but Wax Wings from their newest album has plenty of references too.

Technically it was less of a kidnapping and more of an arranged marraige, approved and ordered by Zeus (the father of Persephone). Persephones own opinion on this differs from myth to myth. But in the end Persephone did get a queen title and a pretty faithful husband (more faithful than Zeus and Posedien) who loves her, not to mention every mortal becomes her subject eventually, so she got a pretty sweet deal at least.

She may have misspoken in sating plagues, but yes, Persephone's name was inscribed on curse tablets, the queen of the netherworld was invoked by mortals to bring down curses upon others. Simple, Persephone wasn’t mortal. She was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, and in many myths it was actually Zeus’s idea for him to kidnap her. This means she was always a goddess and also Hades’ niece.

  • @inkynewt

Persephone was always a deity. She's the daughter of Demeter and Zeus. Full deity blood, not even a demigod like a lot of heroes. It's thought this may be a holdover from older myths being smashed into the Persephone myth-most likely those of a no longer extant flower maiden goddess.

@@inkynewt Ah, I see. My hopes of being made into a deity are again dashed to the rocks (though note that my hopes were never very high to begin with). These days, the most exalted people on the planet are those who surgically transition from one gender to another. One who does so will be an instant celebrity: featured on the covers of magazines, being interviewed by the mainstream media, and given VIP treatment everywhere. Such "transitioning" is probably the closest that we mortals can come to being turned into a deity in our lifetimes, I suppose. It won't make us immortal, but it will give us superhuman allure.
