    Suits aren’t “phasing out”, everyone used to wear a suit to work in the 50s and 60s because you would wear a suit out in public in general around then. Since about the 80s suits are mainly for executives or people that have an important or high level meeting or interview. I don’t feel like it’s changed too much in the last 30 years. What has changed is that piercings and tattoos are now allowed

    I live in Russia, it's pretty cold in winter and hot in summer. Wearing a suit is impractical in both seasons. In winter you have to put on a winter coat over your suit - that's hot and cumbersome, layers of clothes make it hard to move. A suit that is comfortable to wear at least in one of the seasons costs pretty much to buy and look after. Why spend time and money on something so useless when a pair of jeans and a shirt will always do? Unless you have a highly formal occasion every once in a while.

    Say what you want, business suits went out as wages stagnated. Workers can't even afford to buy 5 days worth of business suits, simply not in the budget anymore. That's not even the only consideration; wages stagnated, apartments got smaller and cost more....I don't have enough closet space to own a full set of business suits on top of normal casual clothes....and to have a dry cleaning budget on top? I barely have laundry mat money.

I worked at Wal-Mart and Homedepot, both were absolutely terrified of unions, and had decent benefits for those that stuck around. Sure, the starting wage wasn't livable if I was on my own, but I honestly think it's a pretty entitled view to think you should, when just starting somewhere, be able to afford living arrangements on your own. I'd guess mass production of clothes made to standard measurements rather than being tailored to the user, made suits really uncomfortable compared to more stretchy mass-produced casual wear. Also if you use a mass-produced suit that is loose enough to be comfortable, it really doesn't look much better than any other clothing. It's natural that after a few generations growing up with seeing suits as something either ill fitting or uncomfortable or both, not really worn for any other reason than being traditional, it makes sense that people would just stop making ugly suits mandatory and just let people wear something just as good looking (or even better looking) casual wear.

  • @SteinGauslaaStrindhaug

    @SteinGauslaaStrindhaug

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Prince of Logic I just mentioned another possible reason for suits dwindling popularity, nothing about whether it's appropriate or not. But if we're going to talk about how appropriate it is: appropriateness is just based on what we're used to. Say, if in the future suits were only used for formal parties and certain national holidays, a suit in a courtroom would also feel inappropriate since it would seem like showing up party clothing in a serious setting. Heck if nudism was the norm everywhere as long as it's warm enough, showing up dressed in clothing in summer would seem inappropriate (you'd probably wonder if they have a fever since they appear to be dressed for cold weather).

  • @SteinGauslaaStrindhaug

    @SteinGauslaaStrindhaug

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Lord Farquaad because that was the hypothetical premise: IF suits were ONLY used in party settings, wearing it in other contexts would be inappropriate. My point is there's nothing inherently appropriate about a suit, it's only a learned social norm. It's not even that hypothetical... a suit used to be appropriate in almost any setting (unless it was too informal) a hundred years ago; but if you show up in a suit today at the beach or when hiking in the mountains, etc you will get weird looks.

I have been wearing suits all this time. I had the opportunity to work for other industries, and depending on the industry, it can go from "only management wear suits" to "nobody wears suits, not even the boss". I still have a more formal, business-like clothing style when I go to work. Because that's my work-self and not my leisure-time self. I know some cannot understand this but for me it's easier to let the job be the job, it makes it easier for me to switch off. Plus it makes shopping easier.

    As a kid in the 90s I was looking forward to being an adult, the whole atmosphere of an office and a suit looked so appealing. Now instead of that idealized goal I’m dressing much like I did as a kid and I work in a big room with a dozen other people when we would’ve all had our own little room. I’m sure the modern ways work for the majority in 2020, but feeling like a perpetual teenager isn’t what I was hoping for.

    I think work attire is getting a bit too informal and casual for my liking, especially when it becomes too sloppy. I’m not an oldhead either; I’m only 26. Sure, certain professions shouldn’t require a three-piece suit, but t-shirts and jeans is too informal in certain settings, imo. At least wear a long-sleeve. I also dislike when people wear ill-fitting suits. A lot of men these days don’t know what a tailor is, have never used one, and simply buy off the rack and never get the suit tailored to their proportions. It doesn’t matter if you’re super obese or super skinny, a tailor can do amazing work to make you look like a million bucks. Personally, I don’t own any suits because my current occupation and economical position doesn’t allow or call for one, but in a couple of years I plan to buy at least 7 suits, all custom-tailored and wear a nice-fitting suit everyday of the week. I don’t care if I’m going to McDonald’s, Walmart, In-N-Out, or some fancy function or restaurant, I want to look my best.

    I've been working in offices since 2005 or so and I've never seen a dress code. People wear sweat pants, t-shirts, cargo shorts, sandals, etc. Even the executives often dress like that. Others wear more formal clothing. It's all down to personal preference. Not sure how the clothes people wear would have any impact on their job if they aren't customer facing. It's only company expectations that would cause any issues with clothing choice. Of course I may be a little biased working in tech on the west coast. WFH during the pandemic so my work clothing is now PJs.

Even in a casual work environment, people should still take pride in their appearance. I've seen people that look great in casual attire, and some people don't look good in a suit. It's not just what you wear, but how you wear it. Also, men should be required to wear socks.

    Related to this.... I worked for JP Morgan Chase when I lived in Phoenix several years ago. One of the things there was that there was an official exemption from the standard dress code implemented for the employees at the Phoenix office after the executives from New York came to the city and realized how impractical it is to insist people show up to work in suit coats and panty hose as was the requirements for the offices in the north-east. So I would wonder if the explosion of population in the warmer areas of the country also wasn't an influence on loosening dress codes similarly to the initial history you mentioned in Hawaii.....

We simply have more expenses like electricity, transportation costs, and insurance to worry about. That’s why formal dress will stay a class designation in the modern workplace.

    I graduated uni in the summer of '07 and started working there in April '08, when I started there as an IT tech they didn't have workplace guidance for how to dress other than (and I quote) "No BDSM wear and not indecently underdressed" (FYI, "indecently underdressed" was there to limit naturism). The university once tried to get ALL staff to wear business attire, it backfired with the Estates and Facilities Management department being builders that had to wear PPE... Business wear doesn't allow for Rush 511 tactical pants, steel-toed workboots and ties tend to get caught in power tools. Plus we IT techs raised hell, ties getting caught in printers and photocopiers, and white full-length shirt sleeves getting trashed by exploded ink cartridges. So they dropped the dress code for all except teaching staff, especially after H&S complaints to governmental regulatory bodies and labour unions. Since then, I have worked for educational charities ... and I love it, I've turned up to work looking like an extra from The Matrix or Sons of Anarchy, and nobody bats an eyelid! My advice for those that want flexible working is to get good at what you do, then work for small (in size) but influential (in market share) organisations in a niche sector, then you are almost at liberty to dictate your terms of employment!

    I have often wondered what happened to dressing up for work. I didn't realize the last legions in industry (Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan) now allow casual work attire. I don't think it's necessary to wear a three piece suit for success or respect in the workplace. However, looking like you rolled out of bed or a yoga class is completely inappropriate too! I think it would be fun to instill Formal Work Wear Fridays since no one dresses up for work anymore. 👩‍💼👩‍⚖️

    Back in the early 2000's I was talking to my uncle who lives in Albuquerque and said nobody where's suits there, it's too hot. Maybe a decade later my dad's office in Pennsylvania stopped wearing them.

    I've always called them "Hawaiian shirts" and so has everyone I know. I wonder when the term changed?

    Well they aren't very Hawaiian, honestly. They have nothing to do with pre-annexation Hawaiian culture, and everything to do with the post-annexation American culture that was forced onto the residents of Hawaii. It doesn't make sense to call them Hawaiian.

    @@tissuepaper9962 Fair enough. I didn't say anything about it making sense, semantically, just that I've literally only ever heard people call them Hawaiian shirts. That's all.

    Why would I wear a business suit when I am working from home? If someone calls you into a Skype meeting they are not seeing my sweat pants, lol.
