The Fall of Disney Parks (Complete)| Disney Genie and the Rise of the Universal Experience

Ойын-сауық

This is the complete version of what was a two part video essay.
For so long, Disney has stood as the leader of the theme park industry. I'm going to be breaking down the history of Disney fastpass and how Disney Genie further destroys the guest satisfaction of the already poor Disney experience. From there, I'll move on to other anti-consumer policies of the Walt Disney Company, as well as break down how Universal parks will rise to set the new industry standard for exceptional theme parks.

When my son asked about going to Disney World in March 2021 I couldn’t justify the price. Out of curiosity I looked into Universal and was shocked at the price difference. We drove down the next month, left with annual passes and returned for another week in August… we now have a third surprise trip in June for my son’s birthday. He had such an amazing time and I didn’t have to plan anything! I have no desire to even consider a Disney trip in the future.

That's what i think as well. Personally, I think they should call it Star Wars/Marvel-Land, but Avarice-Land would be good too. FYI Avarice means the insatiable desire for wealth. Avarice is also a great description for the current times and generation. They say the 1980s were about greed, and perhaps they're right, but at least people were willing to work for it. Now people want everything they see and feel entitled to just, because they exist. So it doesn't surprise me that a company like Disney and its wokeness want people to pay more and give less. You're just supposed to pay more for the privilege of breathing Disney rarefied air at their theme parks!

I think the two of you are p dumb. Imagine you make something, even if altered it’s still yours. It’s his company and he passed, he can’t guide them but they still acknowledge that it’s WALT’S Disney not theirs. Do I disagree that they strayed? No. But his name should never be erased. That is his legacy, every bit of it. The good and the bad unfortunately. And ppl forget Walt wasn’t perfect. Walt was extremely racist and loved smoking cigars (which were removed in all imagery later but you can see him doing the two finger point, even on the statue at the park. Quick google shows that they all had cigars. Disney rebranded it when smoking was bad all of a sudden

In all fairness, Walt would have long shook his head at Disney Parks long before now and even long before the Disney Renaissance. Lest we all forget the original intended vision of E.P.C.O.T. It needs be said that Walt’s vision was not without its problems but the lesson that can be learned from him is that you build exceptional experiences and not marketing monoliths.

I have been saying for the last several years that Disney is hurting its own future by out pricing families. Disney has always marketed on nostalgia, but will they still be able to do that in ten or twenty years when kids today weren't taken there by their parents? My generation was able to go to a Disney park, then we grew up wanting to take our children. But a much smaller number of this generation of kids are actually getting to go to a Disney park at all! I'm a school bus driver and a couple years ago, I polled 50 kids on my bus, asking if any of them had been to a Disney park. Three hands went up. How can Disney hope to continue marketing based on a generation's memory of going to a Disney park when so few of this generation actually got to go? And the ones that did were more likely to have had a negative experience. It amazes me how many people reject my theory about Disney future marketing problem when I tell it to them. Yet they all know me as a guy who loved going to Disney and are surprised when I tell them I don't really have a desire to go back because the Disney trend is now pay more, get less. Disney is severely damaging their brand and I definitely see Universal taking their place as an industry leader.

I think that's an interesting anecdote. Not only because Disney is isolating a potential market, but your story is a common one that I continue to hear. If even the biggest Disney fans, the people who their friends and family come to consult when it's time to plan a trip, are telling them that it's no longer worth it, then where does that leave Disney? A trip to Walt Disney World is a cultural milestone for the American family, creating a reliable consumer base for Disney's parks. When the people who only casually engage with the parks are being told to stay home or even to go to Universal instead, I can quickly see Disney losing a large chunk of people that it's taking for granted. People often point out that the parks are more crowded than ever, and that's certainly true. However, I think that people who are currently visiting are actively having poor experiences, and we will start to see a rapid decline sometime over the next five years or so.

Disney is also losing a lot of nostalgic ground to other media nowdays. When i grew up there where A LOT less things competing with disney. And their content also had some exclusivity about it in a way. It was mostly the full release movies back then and some shorts and magazines. Back then those movies where something special. Now they bombard kids with so much mediocre stuff, i bet by most kids nowdays disney isn't percieved as more special as things like hello kitty, mario or whatever their prefered game character is, harry potter etc. I don't think disney is making that strong an impression on kids anymore as they used to. I think you're pretty spot on.

People knowing that you went to disney becomming more important then the actually experience of being there. Their general marketing has been pushing that way as well. Probably also the reason why they switched to so heavilly relying on current popular ip to attract a wider more casual audience. My wife and I used to drive 10 hours, one way, twice a year for a 7 day trip to Disney. We did this 6 straight years up to 2020, two trips a year. We absolutely loved our Disney vacations! We stayed on the resort, used all the transportation options and always had a blast. However, as you stated, we slowly watched as all the perks we enjoyed for being on the resort and going to the parks were taken away. We had a vacation booked and paid for this past October and then, Genie was announced. We looked at the cost, compared it to what we used to get, what we were getting now and decided to cancel. We hated it but it was the right choice. The "magic" of being there is gone. You literally feel like you pay for every little thing. Each trip would run us around 4000-5000$ included all we spent on resort, tickets, food, drinks, etc. We enjoyed it so much, we were happy to pay that twice a year. We saved up every year for it but they will not be getting that from us anymore. I am sure they will not miss it but they lost some loyal fans of the Disney resorts.

Out of the way but not in a ‘proper’ rest place. I was soon asked to put my mask back on (no one around-why I chose there) and to move. Explained my medical condition with proof. We ended up doing two rides in 5 hours at Toy Story Land, unbelievable. They also somehow overbooked our fast pass for a show at Hollywood Studios and we were shut out. We spoke with customer service and she offered us a lunch reservation at a nearby restaurant, we accepted. We ate a modest lunch and were offered a $500.00 bill. Spoke with customer service again, who said the compensation was the reservation itself, not the meal. The restaurant manager couldn't believe it and said the meal was free. Aside from Epcot and Animal Kingdom we couldn't walk through the park without another person being an arm's length away. Too much stress, anxiety and waiting for us.

Even DCA for as terrible as it was, had some strong ideas behind it that could have been great with the right budget. I have to admit that Hong Kong Disneyland is pretty terrible, and it still hasn't really been redeemed under Iger and Chapek either. @@PoseidonEntertainment Not just when you bleed the whales dry, the Western world is going through some unprecedented wealth inequality not seen since the 1920's with an ever-shrinking middle class. At a certain point you will be pricing out people in professions, trades, and especially lower level white and blue collar jobs. Companies seem to think the stream of people with absurd amounts of disposable income will never end but many of those whales will visit once, drop $20k+ on a vacation staying in a Polynesian Bungalow, and then never return for the rest of their life. It is indescribably short-sighted on the part of Chapek and company and at a certain point will come crashing down on them if the current economic projections continue the path they're going on now. It's a shame honestly, especially being someone who grew up with Disney, worked for Disney, and still have family with the company. Some of my favorite experiences were saving up to spend my vacation time at AKL Club Level, having the dining plan, and being able to enjoy the parks at my own leisure. Club Level used to have absolutely phenomenal food which was often brought up from the best restaurants of their respective hotels (in this case both Boma and Sanaa depending on which cordial time it was) and you had perfect service on the part of the cast members. Cast members are on a whole new level, and their theming is absolutely spectacular, particularly, DisneySea. Many of their attractions are really well kept and in working order, and they use more animatronics for their attractions rather than screens (like the Pooh's Hunny hunt ride) if you haven't checked out how it's done. Can say that the 2017 trip felt like a shadow of the 1998-2005 trips. Anything new is connected to intellectual properties and lacks originality. I’m like if people want to go to a park that requires familiarity with IP franchises to enjoy, they go to Universal. Disney was about originality but isn’t anymore.

Having just found your channel, I couldn't agree more with your commentary on Disney World and Universal Studios. While we were not the biggest theme park fans, I brought my family to Disney World a handful of times simply because it seemed like the only theme park worth spending the money on. But it always felt damn expensive and it never seemed like we actually had fun. From the huge crowds, the long lines, and all the planning that needs to go into the trip, it was always extremely stressful. Plus, staying on-Property always felt prohibitively expensive, requiring to stay at another hotel. When we first explored going to Universal, it was simply because of Harry Potter and my daughter's love for it. The price wasn't too bad either amounting for hotel and entrance passes. We were really sold on Universal once we arrived. The experience was simply less stressful and we genuinely had fun. And the look on my daughter's face when we entered Diagon Alley was unforgettable. Never saw that face when we went to Disney World. On that same trip we became annual pass holders and have gone back 3 times already. Can't wait for Epic Universe to open.

When my sister and I went in mid 2021 when there was no current fast pass system, we honestly thought it was better without them. Everyone was equal, and though the standby lines were physically long, they were relatively brisk because there was no constant pausing to let in fast pass holders. We were able to get on more rides then than we ever had been able to before even with fast passes. I honestly wouldn’t mind if they got rid of the whole system entirely, because overall the experience is better without them (also no stress about having to get back in time for your boarding slot). And of course the new Genie system is just the worst of both world and a parody of capitalist greed nickel and diming people for an overall worse experience. We visited Orlando for 2 weeks this Christmas, visiting both parks. We stayed in a villa for Disney, and spent 2 days in Universal's Portofino Bay. My experience as someone from the UK who only visits 3-5 years: As magical as Disney was with the anniversary, many things didn't feel right - like the fact Epcot just looks like a giant construction site and is difficult to navigate with walls practically everywhere - did they not think that the anniversary, US borders reopening and the holidays would be drawing in much larger crowds and think to maybe work on opening it up a little in that park? it was extremely disappointing and killed the magic quite a bit. the parks did also just feel extremely bare - our last visit was in Spring 2018 and Hollywood Studios honestly felt more bare this time than it did back then, despite the Toy Story and Galaxy's Edge additions. GE as lovely as it is just doesn't have the same nuance as Universal's Harry Potter offerings as mentioned in the video either - Smuggler's Run definitely disappoints and without Savi's Workshop (which wasn't at all cheap either) and ROTR, i honestly don't think i would have enjoyed it as much. Animal Kingdom is also extremely lacking in attractions, resulting in huge queues for the few available. Magic Kingdom is just lacking anything new, and both Tron and Guardians are taking way too long to develop - especially considering Universal built the whole Velocicoaster during the pandemic! Remy's virtual queue was insanely and unnecessarily stressful, as opening it at 1pm means everyone will be trying, causing problems. Luckily there were 5 of us trying, so we managed to get a slot, but in the process 2 of our phones crashed and one kept bringing up a connection error despite trying both wifi and mobile data. It definitely disappointed as a ride too. Disney's parks also reached the point over Christmas where they just completely ran out of ILL passes, so it wasn't even an option. We tried Genie+ for one day and it was absolutely the biggest waste of money - so many attractions would just be unavailable or be hours into the future, meaning you couldn't choose your second until you used that, and having to juggle around the few available was no fun at all. You also only get 2 selections, which honestly feels like a bit of a robbery. Not to mention we had a lot of issues with standby queues - there was a cast member at the Jungle Cruise who was definitely not following the 10:1 ratio and sending 1-2 full boats of Lightning Lane, with around 2-3 parties (depending on size) being allowed to squeeze onto boats in between. We also had an issue with Splash Mountain's Lightning Lane, with it being advertised as a 70 minute wait - it took us almost 3 hours to ride! (We did actually bring this up with Guest Relations in the nicest way possible, who did give us one free Lightning Lane entry each). Now over to Universal. Since 2018, both Hagrid and Velocicoaster have been built and opened, and honestly, they are the two best rides I have ever experienced in my life. Velocicoaster had me out of my seat the whole time, and Hagrid's was so wonderfully immersive, full of lots of surprises - as a Potter fan, I absolutely loved it! Of course, attractions like that may be a little extreme for Disney, but there's absolutely nothing stopping them making similar attractions that are a little more tame, but still full of excitement. We have also been staying on site at Universal despite having a villa since our 2013 trip, moving to 2018 and now 2021. We've stayed at the Royal Pacific twice, and Portofino once, and their pricing and offerings are amazing in comparison to Disney's pricing and have so much more to offer! In 2013/18, we paid around $400 for one room for a family of 5 for 2 nights, this time paying around $800 for the same (which is understandable as it was Christmas), and included in that was the unlimited express pass, which is at least $100 per person regardless - having it for 3 days for 5 of us just for staying on site is a huge saving, and makes our experience even more enjoyable at the parks - less time in the queues, more time in the day and less rushing around feeling stressed, and most importantly not leaving full of regret or thinking "I wish I'd done this", and it's kept us going back to their resorts for the past 8 years! Sorry for the long comment haha, just thought I'd share my thoughts and experiences over the holidays as someone who hasn't visited and likely won't visit for another few years - things definitely resonate with you a lot when it's something you pay so much for in the first place, and don't get to experience all the time! I really hope Disney take more pages out of Universal's book and take a good hard look at their cost cutting strategies.

The first tickets were letter ones, with the higher letter being a more complex attraction. Later they switched to passes for all attractions. In those days it was still enjoyable (and afforadable) to visit, despite the crowds. I preferred it when it wasn't busy and since I lived nearby, could do so. Later when I was older, I had friends who worked there and could get comp passes and freebies. It used to be a real joy to visit Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm (old West theme park). As someone who went to Disney a lot as a kid/teen/early 20’s, the introduction of the magic band was the peek behind the curtain. Its implementation and confusing instructions on how to use was the beginning of the end for my family. One time while staying at the wilderness campground, my dad and I had to spend way too long at the customer service desk getting his magic band connected to his account and connected to his card. On top of that add the stress of having to plan your fast passes far ahead in advance only for them not to work for one or two people in your group while you walk up to the attraction. Now, all things change, and nothing stays the same forever but the attempts at magic band and fast pass plus, to be followed by the genie system, was too much too quickly. We have not been to the parks in almost over a decade, and we live relatively close. The genie system just gives me more anxiety, and the price of it is exorbitant to say the least.

And that's probably it. I was a kid who got to go every year. Now, I'm preparing myself to say goodbye. Really unfortunate that they don't care.

I’m a Universal Orlando ride operator and since moving here we’ve gotten Disney Annual passes as I’ve never been before. I enjoyed galaxy’s edge however the majority of their parks felt very dated and their rides lacking in half of the parks. The rides we found at Magic Kingdom seemed like a cheap way to sell the park on nostalgia with dark rides and unimpressive engineering. Even big thunder mountain is a let down every time I try it and my girlfriend says I have a disappointed face when on it. It’s crazy to think that our company was able to build an entire theme in Beijing and has now 2 new intamin coasters with award winning technology and theming and Disney still hasn’t finished the Tron coaster. I just have this feeling that epic universe is really going to put the hammer down on Disney unless they start to change their guest experience and maybe throw a bit of that money into steady construction.

Mario could fill an entire park by itself: you've got the main continuity of Super Mario games; the Mario Kart franchise; Mario Party; Mario Sports... The main layout of the park could be the traditional hub & spoke model, branching out to the most popular lands of the Mushroom Kingdom. Then when it comes time for expansion, you could add a Kart pavilion with various courses inspired by the games (and not like a wimpy Tomorrowland Speedway, where you putter along at the speed of a lawnmower); a Party pavilion with life sized versions of popular mini games; and finally Sports pavilion, where you can play indoor tennis, golf, soccer, and baseball (and every other year, you could do something special for the Summer and Winter Olympics). I'm A goddamn idea machine! here's what I need to see at the opening of the Classic Monsters land: 1) Ricou Browning is the Guest of Honor for the Grand Opening; he played the Gill-Man in all three Creature from the Black Lagoon movies (the swimming sequences, anyway); he's also the last living actor to have played one of the Classic Monsters 2) a larger than life statue dedicated to Lon Chaney, Jr.; not as any character, but the man himself. He was in 10 UCM movies, more than any other actor -- five as Larry Talbot, the Wolf Man; once as Frankenstein's Monster; three times as Kharis, the Mummy; and once as Count Dracula (technically his son, but the title was passed down). He's the only actor to have played all of the "Big Four" monsters 3) a smaller statue dedicated to Dwight Frye, to serve as a tribute to the various character actors who played supporting roles across multiple movies; he's most famous as Renfield in "Dracula" and Fritz in "Frankenstein", but he also had an uncredited role as a reporter in "The Invisible Man", and bit parts in four of the Frankenstein sequels (two of which were just uncredited villagers) 4) Franchises and characters that need to be represented: Dracula -- Count Dracula (both Bela Lugosi and John Carradine), Professor van Helsing; Frankenstein -- The Monster (both Boris Karloff and Glenn Strange), Henry Frankenstein, Ygor; The Mummy -- Kharis, Andoheb (Egyptian mystic turned High Priest of Karnak/Arkam and Kharis' handler), Stephen Banning & Babe Jenson (twice defeated Kharis & Andoheb); The Invisible Man -- Geoffrey Radcliffe (I know that Jack Griffin/Claude Rains was the original, but Vincent Price just has a much more recognizable voice); The Wolfman --Larry Talbot, Maleva the gypsy woman; The Creature from the Black Lagoon -- the Gill-Man, Captain Lucas. 5) even though he was overshadowed by Talbot, some recognition should go to Dr. Wilfred Glendon from "Werewolf of London" 6) if the Phantom of the Opera is included, it should alternate between the original B&W silent version starring Lon Chaney, and the Technicolor remake starring Claude Rains (the only UCM film to win any Academy Awards)

I would get into the park early in the morning, only to find that the next available times for attractions like Mission: Breakout or Radiator Springs Racers had already been taken up, with the earliest available times around 6PM. But they have taken away all the spontaneity from a visit. I mean who wants to plan out every meal of the day months in advance. We used to buy 10-Day No Expiration Park Hopper Tickets. And use a couple of days here and there with any Florida Trip. But now I feel like when we use up the few days we have left on our current tickets we wont be back. And we have been to Disney at least twice a year over the past 7 years. (yes even in the pandemic). Also because of the declining Disney Experience for the past few years we have purchased Dollywood season passes. And our time up there have been far more enjoyable that our Disney Trips. And at a fraction of the costs. I just feel like if you have to plan for an Experience. Then it is not truly an Experience.

It's shocking to me that Disney is _still_ trying to replicate Universal's Wizarding World. Objectively, WW isn't this earth-shattering revolution in theme park design. It's just well-built, with an emphasis on details and screen accuracy, small but intimate/memorable interactions for audiences, and rides that make sense within the theme. Once I heard that you could buy a Jedi robe in Galaxy's Edge but _were forbidden from wearing it in the actual land itself,_ I knew Disney had zero clue how to replicate something so simple. I can't wait to see how badly Epic Universe ends up blowing WDW out of the park.

  • @fourlittlebirds6166

    @fourlittlebirds6166

    2 жыл бұрын

One reason why the WW at universal has done so well is that JK Rowling has had such a tight fist on it with her “creations” being implemented and branded. And all of that control that she has refused to give up has only BENEFITTED the universal parks in being a totally immersive experience. The one thing that Disney has ALWAYS (without fail) been good at is stealing other peoples ideas and marketing them themselves. Especially if those ideas make lots of money. There is NO WAY that had they bought the rights to Harry Potter, that Disney would not have immediately ousted Rowling and changed everything about the books to their own liking. Which is why she went with universal instead. And total props to her for that choice. Bottom line; Disney steals and destroys ideas from those people who are truly creative. If they can’t steal it, they buy it, and completely retrofit everything about what made it a great concept. If you do basic history searches on each one of their “classic” magic kingdom rides, you will find that they copied or stole, or purchased every single one of the stories and ideas.

I very much agree with this. As someone who has visited the Disney properties for decades now, it is heartbreaking to see the the egregious use of IP taking the place of high quality as the defining characteristic of the parks. I suspect that one big reason for this is that Disney grew so used to having corporations pay for high-profile exhibits that they almost considered it a birthright. Universal has an easier time because they didn't have such expectations.

  • @PoseidonEntertainment

I agree that Galaxy's Edge is lacking. I believe that part of the issue is because its attractions underwhelm, with the rest of the land feeling like an excuse to place in expensive shopping. I don't care at all for Smuggler's Run and I think a decent chunk of people agree. I also feel that Rise of the Resistance is just "okay" against the unanimous praise is seems to get. Perhaps people love it now, but I have a feeling it won't age particularly well after the first few years of hype dies down. It continues to feel "meh" on subsequent re-rides for me, after the novelties have worn off. I will say that Galaxy's Edge fails to understand what makes the Wizarding World so successful though. People buy the robes, the wands, the candy and various other items because they want to be immersed in that setting and world. Galaxy's Edge though? What would I do with a metal Count Dooku bust? Perhaps the lightsaber experience is cool, but it's hidden behind a significant paywall. The droids will lose their novelty after you take them home. It's just "buy Star Wars merch for the sake of buying Star Wars merch" and not doing anything to immerse you into the world being built. Even then, it's not a particularly exciting world to be immersed in. Batuu is neither iconic, nor interesting.

I recently watched an old home video of my family and I on a trip to Epcot in 1992. We stayed at the Contemporary. Almost to the day 30 years later I went with my wife and daughter to Epcot, and stayed at the Contemporary. While we did have a nice time, and the room at the resort was fantastic, it did make me sad when I watched what Disney was like in the 90s. Epcot was so awesome. there were a lot people, but it wasn't packed. We never had to wait in a 45 minute line to get food. You didn't have to make a reservation months in advance to eat at The Land. You had the time to see everything in one day because the lines were not that long. Every world showcase pavilion had shows and live performances. There was an event every day around noon over the lake where there would be fireworks and paragliders and each country would inflate huge balloons. And best of all, there were no drunk 20-30 year olds making dirty jokes during the sing along shows. Magic Kingdom, to me, has not changed much, except for the RIDICULOUS amounts of people. But Epcot is an entirely different experience. The food and wine festival (Which is pretty much a year round thing now), while a good idea, has backfired. How is it enjoyable to wait 45 mins in line with a bunch of drunk college students, for Poutine? Want a soda? Good luck.. I know this makes me sound like an old person, but now that I have a 5 year old daughter it makes me very sad she will not have the same experiences my brother and I had when we were kids, at Disney.

People were glued to their smartphones making reservations for a ride or dinner and simply wandering around like zombies looking at their screens. The visual magic and wonder of actually being there and enjoying the place was lost, replaced by near panic to get a time slot. Universal was superb, got fast passes and did what we wanted with little to no hassle or stress. Come on disney.. Go back to queues and fast pass style entry. Concessions for disability etc as well. Its certainly not the happiest place on earth as it used to be.

None of my local friends have interest in visiting - and my friends who work in the parks, who had once upon a time seen Disney and Disney Parks as their lifelong career, are now looking at leaving because the experience is bad for them as employees, too. Disney is relying on their name brand to keep people in, but the cracks are starting to show. It's starting with the locals but it'll spread.

Just visited Magic Kingdom and was encouraged to get Genie +. To say the least it was very confusing and I found it very discouraging that by 9:30am Jungle Cruise and Peter Pan had Lightning Lane entrance times already pushed out to 7pm. All day, the wait times were 90 minutes long. So we never experienced those attractions. Interestingly, Pirates of the Caribbean showed a wait time of 40 minutes, however we only waited 15 minutes. This also occurred at Epcot for the Soaring attraction, wait time was posted as 20 minutes, yet we just walked right in, no wait time. Magic Kingdom was so packed that it was more like cattle be herded around aimlessly bumping into one another in stark contrast to their motto as the happiest place on earth. Visited the parks for the first time in 1998, since the the guest experience has eroded and the price climbs. Went to Universal in April of 2022 and it was so much different. Disney isn't what it used to be. Great video.

If you are an annual pass holder like my wife and I, they want your money, but appear to put you last when it comes to being able to get reservations to get into the park and lose the perk of park hopping when you want, (After 2PM if you can get a reservation to the other parks before then). You pay your hard earned money to get into the park and now to get on the best attractions, (even the not the best), you have pay an additional fee if you don't want to wait over an hour on line. It seems that every new attraction is basically the same ride as all of the recent additions just a different theme. There are hotel rooms from the big brands which are actually nicer than the Disney resorts for significantly less money than what Disney gives you $400 or greater a night. They basically ruined the Polynesian Resort with their upgrades. Basically made it more cheesy and charging high prices for the experience. IMO, staying at a Disney Resort you are paying for the convivence of transportation to the parks keeping in mind that the off property hotels also offer transportation, (though not as frequent but sufficient in many cases). Universal gives you more bang for the buck and better quality then what Disney World has been throwing out lately. It is up to the person, but if you are saving up for vacation and coming to Florida, I would go to Universal and save a day for the Kennedy Space Center. For basically the same money, you can go to two great attractions. Until Disney gets back to it's roots, I would say there is hardly any value going to Disney World unless you are into the nostalgia, but I would only go the one time.

We've visited Disney parks 11 times in the past 13 years, and in the past few we definitely noted a decline in service. Cast members were indifferent rather than friendly, and at our last visit we actually witnessed cast members snapping and yelling at guests who didn't move fast enough or didn't fully understand something (without having been given any prior instructions). Also, the parks weren't as clean or well kept--and now Disney wants *more* money for this experience?

The magic wears off the cast members because they have managers there who are extremely stuck up and like to antagonize cast members with strict rules. Not to mention overwork them without having a day off between 5 days. The weather. It's the work conditions that affect them. An ex cast member told me that the treatment of employed gotten worse over the years. They want to sell fantasy and a dream to guests which is understandable and correct, but employees must be treated fairly and with dignity because it is them who face and interact with guests. It's a chain reaction. An active cast member had told me that after 20 years working at the park , she is constantly being told she is being watched and will be written up for anything. Who wants to work at a job where you have to constantly look over your shoulder and get threaten with getting fired?

Your genie fast pass won't do... you gotta pay extra. I was told I couldn't eat my ice cream in their restaurant even though I bought in their park.. only to be seated outside in the sun to eat. The cast members our so rude "what do you want?" Is how i was greeted to take my order at the Bengal BBQ. The whole Disneyland park smelled like sewage. My feet ached so bad from waiting in their lines because I could only afford the genie pass for 1 of the 4 days I was there. I have never seen The Mummy, but I absolutely loved the themeing and playful spooks and narrative beats of the coaster. We ended up going on that ride 3 times that day. I went to disneyland about 2 ish years later and I dont have any ride related memories like that. All of my positive memories revolved more around the people I went to the park with rather than the themeing and artistic vision of the park itself. I find it interesting how this downfall of the Disney parks has been a long time coming. It's basically a slow burn over the past decade and a bit that is finally starting to hit consumers.

Long time person who lives near Disney World here: Very few changes over the years after the mid or late 2000’s was ever any good. The only, and I genuinely do mean *only* thing they did that was good that can come into my mind straight away was restoring The Enchanted Tiki Room at Magic Kingdom, but I feel that was only out of luck and because it was less expensive to do. Outside of that though, there has been a significant nose dive in terms of quality. Even a lot of the Eisner era rides were better, and that’s saying a lot since many of those were also tacky or/and replaced classics to begin with. (Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain, the original Test Track, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, etc.) There’s also Toy Story Mania I guess, but that was purely incidental luck for the Toy Story Land in Hollywood Studios as it was basically its own thing before. Beyond that though, you see a lot of ride replacements for all time classics like The Great Movie Ride, (Despite being updated a couple years earlier with a sponsor for seemingly no reason) Ellen’s Energy Adventure, (Which would’ve been smart to revert back to Universe of Energy, but of course they didn’t) Star Tours, (Again, could’ve reverted at least one of them at any of the parks, but nope) Maelstrom, Test Track again, and so many others. It’s honestly a miracle that Muppetvision and Tower of Terror both at Hollywood Studios haven’t been chopped yet, although I assume they eventually will in a few more years time under this management, especially Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster with some other IP, so while I’m sure that ride will still exist, it will probably be ruined more for something more temporary in pop culture. (Not that Aerosmith is relevant by much anymore anyways, but at least it’s unique) And even though I never grew up with rides before 1999, (Since I was born that year) I still want rides like the original Journey Into Imagination to come back. I’m not even asking for them to bring back *every* classic ride of *every* park either, just the truly special ones that stood the test of time even by today’s standards and were obviously better than whatever replaced it. Even bringing back the original Test Track would go a long way, and it wouldn’t be hard to do, especially for a company like Disney. But that’s probably not gonna happen anytime soon, and it probably never will if they’re even willing to keep butchering rides over time like Pirates of The Caribbean. If Disney parks continues on the same path like this, then in another 50 or even 20 years from now they might be mostly left unrecognizable from the 2000’s. It’s a shame too, Disney used to always been renowned for the absolute highest quality in theme parks, and while expensive, every cent was worth it, especially if said things were free like Fastpasses. Nowadays though you can’t even go on a ride without bumping into crowds with your shoulders close, relatively speaking. Even back in the early 2010’s for as busy as it was still wasn’t *nearly* as chaotic as it was later in that decade, and all for what, mostly cheap themed rides you can find at a Six Flags park? I already started to go to Universal a lot more frequently by 2014-2017, and I only stopped because of how much more difficult it is to get money, inflation, and rising prices. Had there been no problems like those though, then I would’ve still continued going to Universal parks more until 2020 for obvious reasons. I haven’t been to a park since December 2019, and it’s driving me crazy that I haven’t, but even as someone who is just observing the changes without going on anything, whatever Disney is doing now is still not good and has only gotten more downhill. I’m not saying that their reputation is irrecoverable since, duh, they’re Disney, but they have a *lot* of things to make up for now if they want my satisfaction and trust back. Movies and TV shows are one thing, that’s all up to personal preferences. Parks though should be an *experience,* not just a cheap gimmick that you won’t care to do again. There are people saving up their lifetimes worth of money not because of the brands, but because of what they used to do with or even without them to truly make something special for generations, if not forever. They have lost that specific touch for their parks for some reason in recent years, and I’m not quite sure why they think any of this is a good idea in the long run. This is the type of stuff we were fighting against for the original California Adventure all those years back, and yet it seems as if literally nobody on any side has learned those lessons. It breaks my heart, especially since I’m also a Star Wars and Marvel fan too. To see them do park lands for them so cheaply like that even makes me depressed at times since they could have *so much* more potential, the original Star Tours at MGM was a great example of this. Probably not as impressive now sure, but it sure was back then, and even without that it’s still a classic experience to this day that can’t be replicated with “The Adventures Continue”. In a perfect world, all parks can have all versions of the rides from all of those years in different spots, but that’s just unrealistic even for Disney’s standards, as they couldn’t really care less about park legacy even if they tried. Ironic that they care so much about legacy in media franchises that they own, and yet they don’t care about their own park experiences that they once put out. That’s just pure hypocrisy right there. And it’s not like I hate the Daisy parks either, I just… I just wish they would do better and not treat the guests like idiots, and if not, then at the very least at a more affordable price. Just give me a good time that’s worth the money. If it’s a lot of money, then provide better rides and experiences. If there isn’t, then make it all cheaper to go to and use to reflect that. I know this is Disney we’re talking about, but just like anyone else like Warner Bros. or Nintendo, they still aren’t indestructible if we vote with our wallets and minds, It shouldn’t be an unrealistic goal to hope for, come on guys… …Needless to say, the only Disney parks I’m willing to ever save up for in the long and distant future at this currently downward spiral rate rate is Tokyo DisneyLand and DisneySea, unless my family somehow gets more easy access to Disney World again. Let’s just hope that they don’t also ruin those hard too in another 20-50 years time eh?

Disney is absolutely too crowded now and no changes they make will be worth it if they do not address that issue. Yes, there is some room left for "people eater" attractions at Magic Kingdom, but remember that MK currently only has the one entrance that chokes itself and Main Street with people. The bypass for the nightly exit was a good touch, but still. Perhaps the hotel busses could come in at another location and perhaps a controlled walkway from the hotel side of the monorail station could route those guests to an entrance in Adventureland. But maybe they should just build a fifth gate, if Disney is still capable of large projects anymore, probably somewhere between the MK and Reedy Lake, where an expanded Ticket and Transportation Center could meet both parks' need for parking, monorail, and ferries, but a separate hotel bus station for each park. Some sort of internal park-hopping transit between the two parks, like the Hogwarts Express, could help take more pressure off the MK. Theming? No idea. Maybe something like Disney Sea, but with different attractions, as most of them already exist in Florida. Maybe some teen-targeting thrill ride park. In the end, though, I don't see a solution that doesn't involve pricing people out to some level. If that is what they want to do, fine, then be upfront about it and (re)start building attractions that are worth paying the premium price. Otherwise, they will slowly slide down into oblivion, basking in a temporary surge in profits until their customers start voting with their feet (and rental cars), and then ultimately not having the resources to fix the slide when those profits have evaporated. A pity. I always rather liked it at Disney World.
