For centuries, the walls of Constantinople seemed invincible. But when the city finally fell, it brought the end of the Byzantine Empire and took the Ottoman Empire to new heights. In this episode of Perspectives, three experts discuss what made Constantinople so hard to conquer and how the Ottomans finally succeeded, plus the ways they changed the world in the aftermath.

This video overstates the effectiveness of the cannons on the fall of the city. The defenders were able to create effective defenses from the rubble. The Ottomans simply wore down the defenders overtime and were able to enter the city thru a gate that was left open.

Thank you! I was just coming in here to say the same thing. Granted, they were only plugging the gaps in the wall from the cannon so it could have gotten the job done eventually. It was really amusing listening the video go into copious detail and then suddenly say, "So yeah the Janissaries just went in and opened the gates." Definitely killed the pacing.

I'm British but Turk origin was born in Istanbul came to the UK in the 60's as a baby. I was curious about my real origins considering there are very few real Turkic people in Turkiye they would be oriental looking people like Mongol/chinese. They were a controlling elite force. It turns out that even though all my know relatives are Turks my dna says I'm Macedonian, Greek and Irish. So I guess my great great parents would have been assimilated as Turks. I bet dna results for people in Istanbul could be very diverse everyone looks so different. I can understand my results after some searching as my family both sides come from the Trakya (Thrace) area.

Interesting how the conquest of a land and the imposition of an alien religion on its inhabitants is described as 'adding to the diversity of the region'. I wonder if the same terminology would be used if it were Christians doing the conquering.

I think your map at timestamp 5:40 is wrong, very wrong. It shows Constantinople as covering all the land down to the Dardenelles, and a large part of the Black Sea coast. I'm no scholar, but I think this needs looking into.
