The Falklands: A Really Dumb War

Ойын-сауық

Argentina as a country may not be in the news or in everyone's minds, but it made it's presence known in the 80's when it invaded the Falkland Islands. Argentina throughout the 20th century struggled with maintaining a stable government and economy, evidenced by its many coups and insurrections. One of the latter Junta leaders, Leopoldo Galtieri, attempted to rally support for his government by invading the Falkland Islands. The Argentinians consider the Falklands rightly theirs, so an invasion to "reclaim" land was wildly popular. Their efforts were initially successful, and motivated by a presumption the British would not try to enforce their claim of the Falkland Islands.
The British did not take well to the Argentinian's excursions. Within 10 weeks, the British completely snuffed out the Argentinian presence in their territories. This resulted in a clear British claim to the Falkland Islands, a surge in support for Margaret Thatcher, and a "vocal" response from the Argentinian people.
Shortly after the Argentinians had decisively lost, public rioting and unrest swept the capitol, and Galtieri was deposed. After a year of interim leadership, free elections were held in Argentina for the first time in around a decade, and Argentina has maintained a respectable democratic government ever since.

heyo, i'm from the falklands. great video, sums up everything pretty quickly. just one thing at the end you said the war was pointless, it was for argentina but not for the UK

Glad you liked it then man. The uselessness comment is more that it was completely and totally unnecessary. I totally understand the UK pulling up and fighting the Argentinians back to keep a region that overwhelmingly wants to be part of the UK, it just shouldn't have gotten to that point in the first place.

@@CiggySnake You can't hold elections on what country to belong to. 50 % of all European villages would create their own country and there would be 6789 countries in the west, and probably worse for the dictatorships. This is a modern myth and ofc. Russia is bowing down to the Gods of democracy every time that they can snatch another piece of land in the name of democracy, but what precedes the democratic circus is the "Rule Of Law" you know, the stuff that protects the innocent washing machines.

one thing that is never talked about in the youtube comments shitshow on all the falklands vids is that Thatcher was a hated figure in the uk that was on the way out. By invading the falklands we ended up with another 6 years of her during which she decimated the uk manufacturing base and the social welfare programs. maybe this was a mad sophisticated long range attack by argentina designed to enslave the uk population to the bankers.

English translate: You are very right because it must be said, the war was like the typical school fight where 2 people fight for the last drink in the cafeteria, unfortunately today in Argentina the British are considered as "Scum, Pirates and Assassins". Greetings from Argentina and hopefully the Malvinas/Falklands issue will be settled and we will leave the "Homeland" aside.

Thanks for the comment man. Sad to hear that the brits are painted with such a grim brush, when the politics surrounding them and the Falklands/Malvinas are, of course, much more complex. Also genuinely sad that a fairly innocuous/unimportant string of islands (no offense to the Falklanders) is a source of such tension, but hopefully said issue can be resolved in due time. Is this perception of Britain as some villainous nation something really entrenched in Argentinian society, or do you see people starting to discard such beliefs and be less concerned about the Falklands? Curious either way.

Well, in the opinion of Argentine society, anyone who smacks of the British is already a sign of contempt on many occasions, the English are rarely spoken well of, and the British are also considered, as you know, the "worst thing" that has ever happened to them. happened to Argentina which annoys me because if we had won we would continue in Dictatorship to this day and I consider the British as part Liberators because if it weren't for them I wouldn't be commenting here. The only ones who speak well of the British are the Ex-Veterans of Malvinas/Falklands and people who really know what happened in that War, in short, in conclusion: Argentine society will always hate the British just because they robbed us/ They colonized some little islands that are useless (although there are sources that say they found oil there, so I don't know if they really work, but I won't get into that much) Greetings and thanks for making this video gem that I really hope people from my country see it and say "what we were wrong about all this time".

Probably one of the dumbest wars England/UK ever fought in History!... XD I don't even know what the UK was doing on those Islands (i do but nevermind) when they're just 1.500 Kilometers away from Agentina, while the UK is like 12.000 Kilometers away!!! There is just no way anyone rational can justify such a war! What a fkn meme! XDDD
