The f3 Anti-Grünfeld - Smash the Grünfeld Before it Starts!

The Anti-Grünfeld is an extremely sharp opening which gets black out of his normal Grünfeld comfort zone and theory. White has one strategy when he employs it; checkmate!
If you are struggling against the Grünfeld defense and don’t have a variation you know well and like playing, the f3 madness might be just what you were looking for. The opening is very aggressive and simple to learn. It’s a setup for white, rather than a series of moves you have to learn. White develops and castles queenside. And tries to checkmate. It’s as simple as that!
Black, on the other hand, has a plan similar to what he does in the Dragon Sicilian, a queenside counter attack. Both kings are unsafe. Both flanks usually get blown open. There is no time to waste, and whoever is faster wins. A fun opening to play in which a draw is highly unlikely to happen.
If you are looking for a dangerous weapon to add to your d4 repertoire, the f3 Anti-Grünfeld is perfect.
A thing to keep in mind is that you could enter the Samisch King’s Indian Defense if black plays Bg7 instead of d5. Be prepared for that and study the theory in the variation. That is the only deviation you could face after 3. f3. Good luck playing the Anti-Grünfeld!

Ironically i actually got caught in this line in a classical over the board game playing the grunweld myself and literally found the first 7 moves of this line with no prep however instead 8.Nc6 I played played e5 immediately (which is the top engine move) as i couldn't see the knight development idea but after 9.d4 thought the white pawn structure very vulnerable then played 9.f5 alongside it although looking insane made whites pawn structure ridiculously vulnerable (yes this was a mistake however it's only a mistake with either h4 or a4 as responses turns out) which my already down time opponent didn't find instead playing Bd3 at which point i played 10.c6 and then he played Bh6 which blundered the bishop and i eventually managed to win like i actually ironically suspect he was in this prep as i thought that this position looked absolutely stupid like who plays f3 in the opening tbh. Admittedly I also will say having an black player experienced in Alekhine's defence is likely to be a bad opponent to play this against aswell because its part of why i found this position quite comfortable with black as I felt i could take a similar approach of immediately attacking the centre pawns. I will note aswell the argument that this is better for white at lower levels is just wrong there's a reason why you don't play f3 in the opening and sub 1800 players will usually not castle fast enough and blunder some check due to it in my opinion

Will look up the theory regarding structure on this f3 anti-grunfeld. Find it hard to believe that white has delayed the development of bishop and knight on f1/g1, and black has both knights on b6/c6 which slows down the chance of a rapid attack on white's queen side.
I hate playing Grunfeld against much stronger players or players who understand that opening well. Basically the whole game I am fighting for my life. But when I play it against equal players,no matter if they know it or not,I play it with great success. But I gave up on it because I never wanted to waist my time on something I don't like actually. Its a nice surprise weapon. Kings Indian has much more potential it seems. Even the freaking neural network engines couldn't play it with great success

Adnan The kings indian is a very fine option, but there has been several gms leaving it in the recent times, such as kasparov himself, who gave up on the opening. I myself loved the KID, but i will change it in favor of the grunfeld i think.

I absolutely would play an early c5 as black, probably going into The Modern Benoni where white has played the not so impressive f3. KI Saemisch is also not that dangerous for black I think so that´s also ok with some preparation. 😊

Hello Stefan, is it possible after f3 to essentially treat the position like a Benoni with c5? The engine recommends this and says that the best course of action is to reach an improved Benoni which is close to equal instead of the normal +1.
Umm... how does Kf7 not just lose to Nxe7? I don't see a forced mate after Nex7 or a forced way for black to regain the queen or a forced way to compensate for this queen sack. It just looks like you might have gotten confused about the position or I am missing some insane computer move that you did not show us. (24:35)
