    If this race were to happen now, there would've been 8 vsc's, 6 sc's, 4 red flags, a 50,000 dollar fine for David Coulthard (for wearing the wrong helmet), death by firing squad for Ocon, and don't forget the dutch national anthem.

    Though racing under a French passport, Alesi's family has Sicilian ancestry, and he feels almost as much Italian as French. It's a big part of why he followed his heart to Ferrari in 1991 instead of taking a Williams offer (that and Williams were dicking about with contracts and Ferrari did look a good prospect at the time)

    Panis really got all the luck that day, didn't he? His team called for him to pit a few laps before the end for fuel, but he said something along the lines of "I can see Coulthard in my mirrors everywhere, if I run out of fuel, bad luck. But if I win, *we* win." And in parc fermé, there wasn't enough fuel to restart the car, but enough for samples by the officals. Phew.

    He still made four on-track overtakes (on Herbert, Brundle, Häkkinen and, less cleanly, Irvine) in order to get in that position to capitalise. Of the seven classified finishers, Panis was lowest of all on the starting grid, so he made a fair chunk of his own luck that day too.

    Given Murray's dispassionate call when Badoer's Minardi failed at the 99 European GP while in 4th place "Oh he's doing a Hakkinen" which I still feel was insensitive commentary given what those 3 points (as it was for the top 6 at the time) would have meant, just felt terribly cruel.

    People usually seem to forget that Panis had to beat Coulthard in a McLaren to win this race. Sure the attrition was off the charts, but this wasn't a steal either. He stayed consistent and fast despite the conditions, got aggressive when he needed to be, and was luckier than the others who had mechanical issues. Great video Josh !

  • @FightingTorque411

    @FightingTorque411

    When he took the lead on lap 59, there were still nine cars running, and all except Badoer had qualified ahead of Panis. In a race where (correct me if wrong) nobody else made a single on-track overtake, he made FOUR. He was also fastest in the final Sunday practice session. I think he could genuinely have finished P3 or P4 even if nobody had retired. There was some luck involved for him to win, but an awful lot of talent too, and I think Canada '97 robbed us of seeing what he could do as much as Kubica's rally crash did for him.

    Incredibly, we were two hairs' breadths from having just ONE car finish. Barrichello crashed at Rascasse not because of losing grip in the rain, but because his rear suspension broke entering the corner. It had been damaged earlier in the lap, having been rear-ended into Massenet by... David Coulthard, who somehow got away without terminal damage himself. Furthermore, after Hill's engine blew it left a stream of oil down from the tunnel into the Nouvelle chicane. Alesi negotiated it safely, but when Panis arrived, he skidded on the fluid and did a 360⁰ pirouette into the chicane run-off without touching a barrier #blessed All of which means the only person not to have ANY drama the whole race (and could have been P1 out of 1 but for narrow margins) was Johnny Herbert. I'm pretty sure he also must hold a record for most positions gained for a podium finish without overtaking a single other car.

    I think Ocon does come close for his victory in Hungary 2021. Bottas more or less took out himself and four others, Leclerc had to avoid the mayhem and was then taken out by Stroll, Gasly also had to avoid the mayhem, so by the first corner, Ocon had risen to 2nd from 8th on the grid. Then upon the restart came Hamilton's tyre blunder and since Vettel in 2nd with whom Ocon battled all along without ever being passed was disqualified, one could even say his victory wasn't even in contention. :P

    There is a bigger chance of Josh making a video about 1996 before the Monaco GP than there is a chance of a safety car in Monaco.

    Irvine got his revenge on Panis the next year, by holding him up savagely while a lap down in the Spanish GP, likely costing Panis the win.

    Problem with monaco is that for any overtaking to happen, you need a significantly faster driver to be behind a significantly slower driver. Now logically speaking if the guy is much faster, there isnt really any good reason why he wouldnt have qualified before the others. So you basically need a fast guy to e.g. have front wing damage, a puncture or something else, then he needs to make it to the pits, catch up and start overtaking. There is no way you have actual back and forth battles between faster guys. Other tracks are amazing because you get those switchbacks or you can go side by side through 3 corners and then with a smart move that lets you end up on the inside line in the 4th corner to finish the overtake. Monaco got nothing like that. The only realy overtaking opportunity is by basically sliding in your nose after the tunnel. That usually end up in some contact, then the driver you overtook cant make the corner and goes on straight, making the chasing driver superbly angry and putting the guy in the front in an awkward position, where he doesnt really know if he should or shouldnt give the position over. But thats all over with todays cars of course. Even a faster driver aint getting a nose in there.

    I'm a self-confessed Damon fangirl. This race broke my heart. At least he won the British GP, something his dad didn't do. Obviously I cried my eyes out when he won the championship! (I've been neutral since he retired. It's much easier on the blood pressure.) Murray, generally a very kind commentator, could be quite vicious when he wanted to be 😂 I'm glad Panis won, especially after what happened to him in Canada. He was, as Josh said, very talented. There was another crazy race with a similar outcome about, crumbs, 10-15 years before this one? I can't remember the year. All the leaders kept breaking down. Patresi won IIRC. (I did watch it but it's a long time ago!) It seems that roughly once a generation Monaco gives us something worth watching.

    Yea, I'm not bothering with this race weekend. I was reluctantly tuning in, but BBC have changed their radio player on the website, so can't sync with TV footage and that tipped the balance. I've always found Monaco incredibly boring, but habit's meant I've endured, but not this weekend. 🤞 I can use this to completely stop with F1 as I'm pretty tired of the whole thing at this point, but 30 years is a lot of habit to break.

    This was the race no-one wanted to finish... And the one we just had was the one no-one wanted to watch for how *boring* it was. Even compared to past Monaco GP's.
