The Extreme Fight that Mentors Hate - The Mad Mentor #07

Ойындар

It was only a matter of time before we got an extreme trial. Does The Great Hunt REALLY count as an extreme, though? Well, this week in Final Fantasy XIV my mentor roulettes took me to some interesting places. I got a few fun things for the first time, and some familiar places too...

Another thing about the "healer strike" is that a strike only works if it has specific, meetable demands upon which it will end. "We're on strike indefinitely cause shit sucks" just isn't enough.

The only "demands" I've seen boil down to "take all the non-healer healing away and make healers do more damage." While I agree that a lot of the tank self heals are getting out of control (War Main here) I think more heal checks and varied mechanics would serve better than trying to nerf or remove things.

  • @Rotaretilbo

It also really tickles me that the vague demands we do get are things like "give healers more DPS", a thing they are already doing and have expressed interest in continuing to do, and "make content harder", a thing that YoshiP has already explicitly said they're going to spend this expansion working on. Like, what a time to decide to hold this stupid strike, ahead of the expac that is already doing half the things they were demanding in the first place. I'm reminded of an anecdote I heard, that YoshiP apparently asked a group of people, presumably at one of the 2016 FanFests, to raise their hand if they wanted harder content in Stormblood, and most of them raised their hand. Then he asked people to put their hands down if they hadn't completed the Midas (Savage) tier, and almost all the hands went down. Probably apocryphal, but I do think a lot of the people saying things like "savage can be trivially solo-healed" (a real thing I did see posted in the healer strike thread) or gesturing vaguely at the fact that highly organized statics of some of the best players in the game have managed to clear ultimates without healers (another thing I saw posted in the healer strike thread), probably have no idea what they're talking about, when it actually comes to game balance and difficulty.

The craziest thing to me is that this started because Xeno and his friends (known endgame players) cleared a dungeon at the media tour. I'll forever say this, endgame players are a different breed of player compared to players like me (I aspire to be a good endgame player though. It'll bring back fond memories of my Destiny 1 years. I still remember two-manning Crota with a friend back in middle school). I'm definitely down for harder dungeons so long as it doesn't interfere with story progression. The strike to me at this point though just feels like these players are more jealous of the endgame players and so are trying to get classes like Warrior nerfed. A friend of mine who I told about this said it best: "Why the hell are those on strike demanding the skill removal of a class's kit? That seems incredibly counter intuitive and will only harm the game's health in the long run."

the only issue with roulettes is one you cant really solve: over-saturation of ARR content. just due to the fact that there will always be more new free trial players doing ARR stuff and the significant portion of those players who dont really continue passed heavensward due to burn out/ lack of interest generated. if every new player did actually play through the full msq then repeating ARR content wouldnt be as big of an issue. however there really isnt a way to guarantee people continue with the full game

The thing about the healer strike (imo as a tank main) is it's a strike in protest: meaning that its goal isn't having demands met so much as bringing attention to an issue. In that sense it's working (without even being executed) because people are talking about it. Of course the no-healer dungeon run as a spark is a silly spark because it's a dungeon and they're presumably gearcapped, this is not in any way indicative of how endgame Dawntrail will feel for healers. Gear is actually a huge part of the problem for healers (and to a lesser extent tanks) because at level cap it seems to scale up at a faster rate than the incoming damage (in casual content anyway) (Smiletron, the Dead Ends and the Stigma Dreamscape were way more challenging and fun when they were the expert roulette than Aetherfont and Lunar Subterae are now). I wonder if there's room in the game for straightforward tank and spank fights that have casual level mechanics but consistent high incoming damage for both the party as a whole and the tank especially.

26:50 - Fun fact. in FFXI, Ninja’s are tanks. they use consumable items to blink tank with the subjob of WAR set to provoke. The consumables allows mobs to ‘miss’ up to 3 single attacks if i recall correctly. and the blinks will all be used up in the presence of an aoe. It’s been so long, I forgot the specifics, but blink tanking was a thing for Ninja’s in a party/group.

  • @OBXandos

    @OBXandos

    12 күн бұрын

Ninja tanks were so broken when they first appeared. In XI when a mob hit you it lowered your threat, that is why tanks needed to keep their damage up and constantly had to use Provoke. Since Ninja's never actually got hit their threat was never reduced. Your DPS could go ham and never rip the mob off of the tank. Once your Ninja got high enough level to have both Utsusemi Ichi and Ni they could rotate shadows to the point of invincibility. Eventually Square gave in and said Ninja tanking was real tanking and acceptable, but also nerfed them pretty hard to not completely outclass all of the other tank types. That's when things like removing shadows lowered your threat and AoEs removing all shadows were introduced into the game. Ninjas had to work a little harder on their threat and mitigation. They were still highly sought after tanks but Paladins and Warriors were still acceptable to have as well.

For the future, in Tam-Tara (Hard), Paiyo's actual health doesn't *really* matter. Every time he takes damage, the boss gets bigger. When Paiyo has taken an amount of damage equal to or greater than his max HP, regardless of any healing, the boss enrages. Since each big orb hits for about half Paiyo's HP, then two big orbs is enough to instantly trigger enrage, even if you technically keep Paiyo alive with healing.

Tanks, which can be just as obsolete with how op the healers are, at least have real dps rotations that make their job fun still even when the extent of tanking is just make sure the autos are on you.

I'm absolutely fine with casual content not really needing all of the roles. My gripe with Healers, which I've been harping on about since Heavensward, is that they just keep giving us more and more healing abilities and strip away our other stuff. Either make me heal more (and make healing fun to do, with like a healing rotation or something), or keep it as it is where I spend all my time dealing damage *but make dealing damage fun.* As it is, neither part of the kit is *fun* in the way DPS' rotations are just intrinsically fun to execute, and also the part they want me to use all the time isn't necessary 90% of the time. I think the Healer Strike is misguided because people keep saying "We're not needed" and "You don't make us heal enough" but that's missing the point. The point is that Healers constantly get the short end of the stick. If you have to heal a lot, you're spamming one-note healing skills and throwing out oGCDs. If you never have to heal, you're pressing one-note damage skills and throwing out oGCDs. Neither of these is fun. So: Give Healers a rotation. It doesn't matter whether it's for restoring or removing health.

The healer strike is a little more than just about healers not being needed in dungeons. Even in challenging content they're resident sleepers. Also, 3 DPS 1 tank is optimal in dungeons, not 4 healers, and neither the standard comp, which is another issue. It was a lot harder to pull no healer dungeons runs before, and people just went through dungeons just fine.

You bring up a good point about the Healer Strike, a misconception that is missed is the IL of character at the start of an expansion. Lv 70 gear, Omega, IL 400, 405 for weapon. So by level 76 you are finally getting crafted gear that outclasses it at 409 which means for those first 75 levels you are over the IL cap to take on those dungeons, so of course they tend to be easier. Rather than a healer strike, I feel what could be done is perhaps offering an incentive to have a queue option of people playing at IL, where maybe certain drops like minion/scrolls/cards will have a higher drop rate by doing the content at level rather than overpowered. Take Holminster Switch for example, at Level Sync a Warrior has 26522 HP, with IL sync it's 22853 HP, that 3,669(nice) difference does make a huge difference in terms of surviving certain pulls and the need for a healer So I think the proper route that players could take is suggesting to offer in-game perks for doing content at a higher difficulty aka less IL so that a healer is more needed for that content. Granted that's an issue with leveling dungeons as a whole, the whole concept behind them is do fast, get tomes, so speed is always key, unless SE added a reason to challenge the content at less IL people will always use the path of least resistance and if that means steamrolling content with 1 tank and 3 DPS, that's what they will do.

The thing about healer-less dungeon runs isn't that it's possible to do. It's that it is the optimal way to run them because they aren't dangerous at all. 1 tank, 3 DPS are able to clear an expert roulette dungeon in less than 12 minutes (pushing 10 depending on DPS) with no issues. Having the extra DPS means you burn through trash/bosses so quickly that your buffs might not even come back in time

It is funny that, when I meet people, they always have some kind of magical answer to solve my situation of working at a factory: "why didn't you move to the capital?" "¿Why don't you charge for making portraits?" "¿Why are you not a tatoo artist?". They just see the success, but ignore how hard is to rent a decen place at the capital while getting a gig or that only 1% of the population want to actually pay for a portrair or that getting adecent place for a tatoo studio is expensive

When I do play healer I am usually not terribly needed unless someone just decides to not move. Which is fine. keeps me busy. But when I have people on we usually go 3DPS and 1Healer and just do tank pulls. Very engaging for the healer with the constantly shifting aggro and the DPS having to actually engage a brain'cell to mitigate and/or know when to single target if they get overwhelmed. We call it the Squishy Tank Game because that's what the DPS are. Squishy tanks. I am slowly spreading STG to the masses... I think Sage and Scholar do it best because they can buff people with extra HP in the form of shields, but it is super fun to just test your limits with Astro and WHM too. Keeps you looking at who pulls hardest and makes you pay attention to who gets into the most trouble.

I say this as someone who's been involved in the Healer Strike forum thread for a while, the main issue isn't entirely that healers aren't necessary, but Healers just don't do anything for most of all casual content. You said it yourself numerous times in your videos. you just let Selene do all the work, or let the tank heal himself. Healers might throw out the occasional oGCD heal, but just about all you're doing is just mashing Broil throughout all casual content. Even savage and ultimate has about +80% of your GCDs just be your main damage skill. Players are good at finding a problem, but not finding a solution. Tanks don't care about the lack of mitigation checks or aggro mechanics in casual content because they've got a full damage rotation to keep them occupied. If they gave that to healers, then no one would be complaining. The point of calling it a strike was to gather as many eyes on the concept as possible. Healer mains are leaving the role, and we want our complaints to actually be addressed for once. I was a Scholar main until a couple months ago when I tried out Black Mage in savage, and realized how much fun an actual DPS rotation was.

free trial players can join party finders if they're posted *but* they're still locked at 70 so they'd be carried either way. personally i kinda hated farming rath ex unsynced in shb and only tried it synced once in my stupid mentor horse journey then vowed to never do it again. it's more interesting in the sense that you have an actual kit at 70 and it's mostly a reactive fight compared to some of the spicier ARR extremes. The biggest thing is how it'll force a wipe if you hit a certain number of player deaths so you can't even safely haul a corpse through it if they keep standing up and dying. Hell, I've had 8 man rathalos runs that're about that bad, people screaming about not being healed and ignoring any attempt to explain that they need to use the duty action button and suddenly having a *very* different combat design to work with is often just overwhelming. Truly, StB had some of the most fun fight design for normal content (and not just Rathalos!) but that's also what makes it such a fucking *nightmare* in DF.

Gamers tend to evolve with difficulty, as is proven by games with actual difficulty settings, prime example i know being phasmophobia, when a new, harder difficulty drops, it feels impossible, a year later, its ez! My point here being if all healers became DPS and stuff was FORCED to be run without healers, gamers would adapt, comps would run dancer warrior monk ninja or something for dungeons, and everything would eventually be just fine. I want to strike, but i cant, ive tried to dps, cant do, ive tried to tank, too boring, i belong on heals, but if i could, i would...

As a healer main as well it's interesting because I honestly have the opposite perspective to you on this. I'd love to see SE put more work into designing content so it's interesting to heal & well balanced difficulty-wise so that new players can learn the role but it's also fun for more experienced ones. I do like playing tank and DPS as well as healer and those jobs can entertain themselves in dungeons by optimising but as healer there's just not that many decisions to make once you're spending all your GCDs in damage. On scholar your reward for not needing to spend any aetherflow on healing is a few extra single-target energy drains on a single mobs in a pack? This does not spark joy. IMO the healing range changes in 6.4 took away an element of gameplay I found really interesting, and it's a shame that lots of EXs could comfortably be solo healed in terms of damage but get run with 2 healers because it makes mechanic assignment more predictable. On the other hand... I'm not bothered at all by the no healer TOP run. Nor do I think tank mains should be bothered by tankless UCOB. Both those runs clearly took a shitload of planning and incredible execution. Can you clear TOP without healers? Yes, technically you can... but if you look at how they solved Cosmo Memory (which is designed to need healer LB3), they needed insanely precise timing to cheese it with the rezzes animation, and we are talking about something that happens 18 minutes deep into a crazy hard fight. The TOP run comes across more to me as "lets take expert healer players and have them do a ridiculous challenge run where they've gotta ply RDM, SMN, PLD, and WAR" if you look at the amount of clemency casts and people surviving on a few hundred HP.

@@Anirakira i agree with your first point and i really wanna see healers get more mandatory use, Abyssal Nox or SoS LB4 are imo great mechanics for this, the only real issue i have is when you have a static, which for most makes the game a lot more fun because of consistency, you (almost) might aswell opt to just not heal and coordinate stuff to run no healers, the fact that casual content is runnable without healers i think is even a good thing, as it lets people play healer and mess up plenty while learning, i dont believe extreme, savage, and most definetly not ultimate, should be possible without a specific role, solo heal? Fine by me, solo tank? Enjoy! 3t3h2d cuz no tight dps checks? Makes for great memes with the feeling of immortality, but being able to clear hard content with 0 of a specific role just really makes that role feel obsolete and gives no incentive to play, let alone learn the role.

Most of the time the worst I'll see is a single wipe and even then you can get away with a lot thanks to powercreep and it dies relatively fast even with new players. Phase 2 actually completely voids ALL healing. The only way to "heal" other players is with shields. As a small tip, you can keybind both Duty Action slots. They're at the bottom of the hotbars tab.

Hi, I'm the healer who's kept cure/benefic on my hotbar and will defend it. I keep 'cure 1' on 5 and 'cure 2' on 6 on my main hotbar. In calm situations i can pretty reliably hit cure 2 every single time, but in panic healing situations or under pressure it gets a bit more difficult as I am sure all of us healers know well. By keeping 'cure 1' on 5, in panic situations where I need to get the healing out NOW 'cure 1' serves as mistake a buffer for when I got for 'cure 2' and miss. It may not be optimal healing, but its still healing and more often than not it is just enough that I can follow it with a 'cure 2' and everything turns out alright. On the flip side of the coin, I find shield healers to be a bit more difficult to play as they don't have this safety buffer for high stress situations and I wind up mispressing or fat fingering buttons way more. If you are a beginner white mage, don't listen to the people telling you to take it off your bar. Place it next to 'cure 2' instead.
