The Extraordinary And Untold Life Of Sir Christopher Lee
Away from his acting career, Sir Christopher Lee led a remarkable life. From witnessing the last public execution in France, to serving in the SOE in WW2, and even recording and releasing his own heavy metla albums, he managed to pack a lot into his life apart from starring in 220 feature films!

Death came to Sir Christopher Lee at the end and with a bow said, "Sir Lee, it is time." Sir Lee turned to the ghost in black robes and with a returned bow answered, "Yes, I know, oddly, i have always been a fan of yours." Death let a gin spread across his face and if one could look upon this meeting, they would swear they could see the skeleton blush. "As I have been a fan of yours Sir." As the two walked down the tunnel to the Gates of Saint Peter, Sir Christopher Lee turned to the Reaper and asked, "By any chance, does the Angelic Choir play Metal?" The old ghost turned and replied, "They do now, my friend, they do now."

I saw an interview with someone famous (I can’t remeber who) asking Lee about his work as a spy during WW2. Lee replied: ”Can you keep a secret?” To which the person answered ”Yes” on which Lee leaned forward and said softely in his ear ”So can I”. And that was that.
Sir Lee lived his life at 100% percent. Did everything he thought he should not what he must.

When someone makes a Biography for Christopher Lee, they should just list the three or four things he *hasn't* done. Because if they listed all of his achievements, the book would require three follow-up albums and an extended edition to list everything accurately.

G'day Matt, Thank you so much for this video. In 1994 I was a newspaper and radio film reviewer ‘stringing’ for a few Australian publications at the Cannes film festival. Before lunch one day I physically, literally, bumped into Christopher Lee as he was coming out of a Tabacs and I was rushing in. I'm a solid bloke but I was almost bowled over by Mr Lee, despite his age he was in good shape. He actually grabbed my arm to stop me from falling. Although it was clearly my fault for rushing across the road bang into Mr Lee, he couldn't have been more apologetic. I had been interviewing celebrities, stars and directors all week and I didn't even know Christopher Lee was in town. Of course, I had to ask him for a quick interview. He ever so politely declined and then surprised me by inviting me to a pre-lunch drink at the 'Petite Carlton' bar. I spent the next hour or so in the company of someone I thought at the time, and still consider, to be the politest, cultured, witty man I'd ever met. He began by reminding me that anything we said was off the record. Of course, I agreed. We talked on a couple of topics, then he mentioned he'd noticed my RAAF lapel badge the moment we met. He became even more friendly and relaxed with me. In fact he said he was no longer talking to a journalist. I had done no research on Mr Lee, never expecting to meet him, however, I was pretty well up to speed on his film career. When he asked me what I wanted to do with my journalism I told him I had gone to university as a mature age student and that I wanted to become a military historian - which I have been for many years. Upon hearing this, he pulled out from a little leather folder a simple, old round metal disc that had a two-digit number on it; nothing else. He told me that it was his SOE number. He said he'd be thankful if I didn't divulge the number; and I never have. By the way, years later, at a Battle of Britain dinner in Hobart, Tasmania, where I lived, I met an older gentleman who had been in the RAF, the RAAF and also SOE. He too, showed me his simple metal disc telling me this was his SOE number. When I said, yes, I know it is; he seemed genuinely shocked. I just winked at him and said I'd once met one of his 'mates'. Anyway, my chance meeting with Christopher Lee was one of the true highlights of my life; even though I earned my living for quite some time talking with international film stars. I was not easily 'star struck' (with the exception of Audrey Hepburn who I met, 'smuggled' cigarettes to and, later that day actually danced with at a UNICEF function, but that's a story for my autobiography). Sir Christopher Lee was a true gentleman in every sense of the word and I think he actually blushed ever so slightly when I told him, quite truthfully, that his character in 'The Wicker Man' was the last time I was genuinely disturbed and scared by any movie, along with the help of the 'star' Edward Woodward (who I had met in 1979/80 I can't recall exactly, he had just finished shooting ‘Breaker Morant’ in South Australia.) It was Mr Woodward who told me 'Wicker Man' was his favourite film and that although he couldn't be certain, he was pretty sure Christopher had refused any fee. It was a tight budget but Mr Lee loved the part so much he thought nothing of doing it just for out of pocket expenses. Sir Christopher said that this film was 'very dear' to him and immediately gave all the credit for the success of that movie to Mr Woodward. No mention at all about a fee. So typical of Sir Christopher. What a mammoth pity he could not write his memoirs. At least a third of his long life was, and probably still is, classified. Lastly, he gave me some advice. He said, "Do become an historian; history is so important. Always be fair and always get it right, there are so many stories of good and bad people that need to be told." He had a luncheon engagement so we parted, we exchanged cards but, sadly, we never met again. When he passed, I was back in Europe and read about his death while in Paris. My wife and I ordered a bottle of bubbly and toasted Sir Christopher Lee. What a man, what a life! Sometimes, just sometimes 'bumping into someone' can be a life-changing experience. Because of him I had a new found eagerness to know more about this unique man and what he, and his chums, did in the war that finally convinced me to do the job I'm still doing today. VALE and thank you, Sir Christopher. BH P.S. My dear wife, Jo, was my accredited photographer at Cannes that year. While I was having a magnificent time with Christopher Lee, Jo had been wasting it on a beach for 2 hours, with all the other media, waiting for Mickey Rourke to show up. (All these years later that sounds really silly doesn't it.) What I wouldn't give now for just one photo of Sir Christopher and me.

Christopher Lee has got to be one of the most complete people to ever live. He did everything. He lived his life as he planned on it
I've read Lee's autobiography: "Tall, Dark and Gruesome", which is interesting -- and hilarious. Some enterprising soul should do whatever the UK equivalent of FOIA is and get his classified files, because he kinda skips over all that. Two more items: first -- he tells (the book came out in 1977) a better, earlier version of the Peter Jackson story about what people sound like when they are stabbed in the back. As an actor getting bit parts starting out in British films, Lee's characters got killed a lot -- so, naturally, he did it realistically, using his war experiences. Directors hated it, and were uninterested when he explained that's really what violent death looks like. He added something like: "Of course, each of the men I saw die for real had never died before, so their inexperience showed. Actors die all the time, so we get better at it." The other gets at Lee's many decorations from foreign governments, none quite explained in the published records of his life. The story goes that he was with the director of one of his awful Dracula movies, flying into Prague for something. They were met at the airport by a military honor guard, which flattered the director, who thought it was a good sign for the movie. Lee explained: "That's for me, dear boy. I was involved in the assassination of that bastard Heyrich." Top that.

Had the privilege of talking about the Wicker Man for 10 minutes, on the set of Star Wars Attack of The Clones with Christopher Lee, when he sat beside me in between shooting. An inspirational actor with an incredible presence even in his old age...
Wow, he really pulled up to the pearly gates in a sports car, martini in hand saying "what a ride".
I was so happy when a whole new generation of movie fans discovered him through the LoTR and Star Wars franchises. He got to finish his career with those high profile roles.
When you look up "Been there, done that" it has his picture next to it. Amazing life.
Christopher Lee needs a full documentary made of his life . Thank you for this wonderful recount of a life lived full .
Rest In Peace, Sir Christopher. You're gone, but not forgotten.
This made me cry. You did a fantastic job and showed the story of a true gentleman who lived a truly fascinating life of art and adventure.
Sir Christopher Lee, thank you For your amazing life. Now being one with the force and together with the power of the one ring, you live in our hearts forever.
My uncle once told me a very interesting theory. He believed that the moment someone becomes rich and famous, the age at which they become so, is the age they remain for the rest of their lives. I’m not targeting anyone, but leonardo dicaprio is a good example. He became rich and famous when he was a young man and as a result he is still partying in his 40s. Christopher Lee, however had already been through so much in his life, and was mature enough to handle the fame, that he remained a genuinely nice, down to earth man.
I smiled all the way through this. What an incredible man.
This world needs more men like him.
Loved watching Mr. Lee and Mr. Cushing act together. Both were outstanding actors with class.
An actor of his time like so many back then. Intelligent with a lot of class. Unlike so many actors these days. Didn't realise he was a heavy metal fan, respect.
Wow, I thought I knew a great deal about Christopher Lee… After watching your video, I find I was mistaken! Thanks for posting this story about such an extraordinary and well-lived life! RIP Christopher Lee!
I read somewhere that Lee took part in The Winter War in Finland. He wasn't allowed to go the front lines and was given guard duties instead.
Every time I saw him on screen in any capacity he just wowed me. What an amazing man!
Sir Christopher Lee was truly the last gentleman and knight considering his elegance and military prowess R.I.P you badass fucking legend
Absolute legend, I am in awe (had no idea Christopher Lee did Heavy Metal and in his 80's - just WOW). I do love Peter Cushing's reply to Christopher Lee's complaint about not having any lines in Frankenstein though "Your lucky, I read the script". So funny
Some might say, calling him "extraordinary" is an understatement. Great video.
I photograph him in early 2000 he's agent commissioned me for a book jacket, I didn't put importance on his images I wish I kept the negatives. He's a very pleasant skinny man with a great sense of humor.

One major correction to this script. Christopher Lee did _not_ have a "fascination" with magic and the occult. In point of fact, he was openly opposed to both, and warned anyone who asked against being involved with them.
This is fascinating! Thank you for sharing.
Fantastic. So well done. Thank you and looking forward to the next video!

I could wax lyrical about Lee for a long time, but I'll spend my comment on praising you instead, Matt. You deserve more subscribers than you have, and you just earned a new one in me. Your voice is just amazing.
I always thought it was either John LeMesurier or Sam Kydd who appeared in more British films than anyone else. Not so, apparently it was Christopher Lee.
As an ex Australian SASR ( SF ) What a great man . R.I.P
Great video man. I expect to see you at a few thousands subs in a matter of days. Great research, script, and voice.
From what I've seen of the man and the comments on here, I wouldn't be able to say that he's dead as that includes the entire immolation of the man. Instead, passing on would suffice as that he's passed his legacy on to us. Whether to inspire us to grander things or to stare in utter bewilderment, Sir Christopher Lee has indeed raised the bar.
Heavy Metal … would never have linked the two topics until watching this … I’m off for a deep dive. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this 100% respect
Fantastic Mark and beautifully presented !!!
this is amazing, i remember being scared of saruman when i first saw the lotr trilogy, i must have been 8 or 9 years old, but seeing the man behind the character really gives me a lot of respect for Sir Cristopher Lee, what an amazing life, so many experiences, so many places he visited, and how much he had seen, the man really lived life to it's fullest
Great video, a couple of things to add, Christopher Lee is also a decedent of the Knight Sir Humphery Lee and is a distant cousin of the Lees of Virginia which Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee who signed the Declaration of Independence and the Confederate General Robert E Lee are part of. I am a member of the Lees of Virginia and got to meet Christopher twice when I was young back in the 80s. He was a lot of fun to be around. On the note of James Bond, the name came from a soldier Ian knew who died in WW2, and when the Movie Dr. No was being produced Ian wanted Christopher to play Dr. No not James Bond but they had already done the casting he would later on star in the man with the golden gun.
Hello Matt. That was a really good story about Sir Christopher, I had already read a good biography a couple of years ago but only on the Internet. Another great actor who had a really interesting life you could do a story on is the brilliant Basil Rathbone . It would be a great read for people who only know him as a Actor. Best wishes.
