The Exploration of Everything # 3 Michael Groom

Over the past 40 plus years Micheal Groom has dedicated his life to Mountaineering. In this time he has ventured to some of the most remote areas on the planet and been involved in countless extraordinary adventures. He was the first Australian to climb the 6 highest peaks in the world without using supplemental oxygen. Remarkably, he climbed 5 of these 6 peaks after losing the front third of each of his feet to frostbite. In 1996 there was an infamous disaster on Mt Everest, claiming the lives of 8 mountaineers. This climbing tragedy has been immortalised in novels such as ‘Into thin Air’ by Jon Krakauer and movies including ‘Everest’ starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Mike was on this ill-fated expedition and was the only guide to make it off the mountain alive. He has also been awarded an Order of Australia by the Prime Minister for his outstanding achievements in and contribution to mountaineering. These are only a handful of the astonishing moments that have contributed to a truly remarkable life. It just so happens that Mike is an absolute gentleman and an inspirational human being as well. I hope everyone enjoys listening to Mike’s stories as much as I did. Enjoy!

Amazing interview, looking forward to reading Michaels book. I thought the Hollywood version of the 96 expedition ‘ Everest’ was complete garbage and the fact the actor playing Michael was told not to consult with him speaks volumes. A movie about Michaels life would be amazing

Everest, I mean the 2015 movie was not glorifying at all, it tried to remain respectful to all involved parties and was entertaining at the same time. It made me interested in mountaineering and I return to it from time to time. It's a dramatized story of course, because it's a film. There are other film- or documentary-versions which you can watch if you wish. The 2015 film can serve as an inspiration to inform yourself on a deeper level regarding the events depicted there and about mountaineering in general. It's a fairly good film.

In the intro to this it is stated the Groom was the only guide to make it off the mountain alive. That is not true, is it? Neal and Andrei made it off the mountain, too. Maybe you meant from Hall's team? Seems like a significant misstatement though.

He was the only guide to survive from the Adventure Consultants Guided Expedition led by Rob Hall. But it is untrue of the narrator to say he was the only guide from all of the expeditions to survive the 1996 Mt. Everest climbing disaster.

No one could have carried him even to BC 4 not even Anatoli who saved 3 others because they were capable of moving. The only reason Beck Weathes is alive is because for some odd reason he woke up and mustered enough energy to descend the mountain.

@@peteredwards5298 No, he did not. He just understands the definition and role of a guide, and that doesn't include mandatory self sacrifice. I guide is a guide, not a caretaker, not a parent, but a guide. You go up the mountain knowing that if you collapse above 8000m, it's nobody responsibility to sacrifice themselves to save you. Mike wouldn't expect that from his guides, to expect that is what is self absorbed.

Would love to see a part 2 episode for more of his stories if ever possible. I could listen to his stories all day! I’d say we need to protect this precious man at all costs, but it seems that he’s done remarkably well at surviving all these wild escapades on his own. Cool guy!

To think he did it with out oxygen , baffles the mind . In the mountains there is a phenomenon called purified air. This is the lack of oxygen in the air . It's kind of hard to breathe with out it. That's why people sit down and stop moving , another symptoms is frostbite on the extremities. Affecting the fingertips and toes. Him saying he lost his feet tells me he was awful close to the other side.

Did they agree not to talk about '96 or something? I guess he's sick of it, but he's not really newsworthy without it. All I could think when he was complaining about his frostbite was, "Was it worth it then? And, if not, don't do it!" Sounds a bit full of himself.
