The European State Where Women Are Outlawed

High atop a mountain, perched over the sea, nestled within the walls of secluded monasteries, lies a sanctuary of tranquillity where the only sound is the gentle whispers of the wind, soft prayers, and the melody of peaceful contemplation.
And you’re never gonna get in
This place is the Holy Mountain, Mount Athos, a self-governing state within Greece, this 10km border and fence separates this monastic state from the rest of the world.
It’s the spiritual centre of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, they’re the ones with the black robes, different crosses, and fancy icons. Athos is like an Orthodox Vatican and Tibet rolled into one.
Women have been banned from Mount Athos for a 1000 years. Athos is the only state in the world with an all male population.
So what is Mount Athos, what is life like there, and are Molotov Cocktails an ecumenical matter? Well, let’s find out!

when you mention "women are outlawed" in the title, it almost in way shows a certain level of disrespect to the monks. You need to understand that these are holy men and in order to get to a high level of spirituality, in the beginning stages they must learn to overcome temptations faced by the common man, from which lustful desires of being around women can invoke such feelings. Since the monks themselves are just human and not perfect, they must go through such rigorous amounts of discipline as they can't have any distractions leading them from their ultimate goal of getting closer to GOD. They don't do this out of hatred for women. They do it to get closer to the divine.

You see while it truly stands that there are monasteries that were originally patroned and are mainly maned by non Greeks ( Russian panteleimonos, Serbian Hilandar, Bulgarian zografou, Romanian Saint Paul's and Georgian Ibiron( Iberian)), everyone once admitted as a monk in Mount Athos receives the Greek citizenship. Just few inaccuraties, when my father and I went to Mount Athos couple years ago to visit serbian monastery Hilandar (one of the biggest and oldest one there) no we didn't needed to apply for that special visa months in advance, we got it right on the spot, the same very day in fact, only if you want to visit on great holidays like Christmas and Easter you need to apply in advance because of number of pilgrims that would flock to Holly Mountain. Nobody ask us if we are ortodox christians so technically we could be buddists (my father is not even baptised btw, grow up in communist Yugoslavia/Serbia). Not sure for numbers of people allowed but rules and regulations do differ from monastery to monastery. Only strict prerequisites is that you are a man, that you dress "modesty" - no earrings, piercings and short shorts. Oh and you can be there more than three days no problem, but you must ask monks for blessing, permission that is. There is a van ride from coast to monastery. For the actual staying there, yes as you say here you will be awaken in 3 or like in Hilandar in 4 o'clock in the morning and you would be expected to come to liturgy (holly mass in ortodoxy). You are not allowed to take photos of monks (only if they give you explicit permission). It is quite calm there as I remember. And yes you are definitely right when you say that Athos is time capsule in like everything! Great video man! 👍

That's really interesting. Just like you, my dad and I visited Mount Athos last month. He was told by his cousin, who had been there before, that he needed to apply for the special visa, which we got the morning we took the boat to our first monastery. The interesting thing was that No One even asked to look at it (we didn't go on Christmas or Easter), so that might explain our confusion. Although, we did have to contact the monasteries months in advance so they would let us stay there, which we learned was very inefficient. (I understand why. The monks are very busy.)

They will pursue a policy of Bulgarification in the newly acquired lands and end the Hellenic language that was present throughout millennia. Just because a country is Orthodox doesn't mean it's a trustworthy ally in the long run. The Russians for example had a poilicy of Russification throughout most of their history, especially in the Caucasus (Circassia), the Baltics (Finland), and the Balkans (Moldova). They still do in the current Russo-Ukraine war, taking children from occupied territories and indoctrinating them that they are part of the Russian people, and not Ukrainian.

Wow! There is also a greek proverb that says something like that. I don't know if I can translate it correctly. It says: "I have lived there where you are... but sometime, you will also come where I am now" As a Greek woman, I can totally understand the mentality. It's just a serious spiritual matter. Monks have to fight their physical sexual excitement. They have to pray to God and stay in an inner peace of mind. There are some monks that they can not live their whole life in this way, so the leave Mount Athos. But they are a few. Most of them want to obey all spiritual rules. There is a legend about the seven invisible ascetics, that they can appear when there is a spiritual reason. Some say they have seen such men in Mount Athos. Incredible.

So while Karyes is the main administrative center, the place that people get to by boat is the port of Dafni. In regard to instances of women going to Mount Athos: In May 2008, five Moldovans illegally entered Greece by way of Turkey, ending up in the monastic community. Four of these migrants were women. The monks forgave them for trespassing and informed them that the area was forbidden to females. But earlier that year in January, there was a protest there by a thousand Greek women. They went there because five monasteries claimed 8,100 hectares (20,000 acres) of land that wasn't within Mount Athos on the rest of the Chalkidiki Peninsula.

Great video! Mount Athos is a fascinating place. I also plan to make a video about it at some point since as you said, there are quite some political peculiarities that come with it. A few things I’d like to add here: 0:59 The comparison to the Vatican is made often, but I don’t think it's very fitting. The Vatican is the actual center of Catholicism due to it being the home of the Holy See. But Orthodoxy doesn’t have a single center but multiple, as there are a multitude of Orthodox churches - each with their own seat - and none of those are on Athos. Athos is definitely a special and holy place for orthodox christians, but it doesn’t have the same function as the Vatican does in Catholicism. There are many other things which make the Vatican radically different, but enough on that :’ ) 5:15 That's not entirely true, because a number of monasteries on Athos are not part of the Greek-Orthodox Church or Church of Constantinople, but of other Orthodox churches (there is e.g. a Bulgarian-Orthodox monastery, Serbian-Orthodox one, a Romanian-Orthodox one, etc.). And those monasteries also answer to their respective Patriarch. Nominally, all Patriarchs of the Orthodox Church are equals - however, the Patriarch of Constantinople has a special symbolic and spiritual role. 11:17 Since 1980, there is an official, joint theological commission for dialogue, and since then dialogs have been quite frequent - although communion is still far away.

I am (Greek) orthodox. I was born and raised in Thessaloniki, the second biggest city in Greece which is located on the north of the county, relatively near to Mount Athos. My family has strong ties with Mount Athos. Your second point is not completely right. It’s true that in Orthodox Christianity we have a synodical form of church governance (autocephaly), it’s also true that Constantinople holds a special place of honor within Orthodoxy and serves as the seat for the Ecumenical Patriarch, who enjoys the status of primus inter pares (first among equals) among the world's Eastern Orthodox prelates, however Mount Athos falls under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and New Rome. So, the monasteries of Mount Athos answer exclusively to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Imagine, that the autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece doesn’t have jurisdiction over Mount Athos, and Mount Athos is de jure part of Greece. The Greek state has specific political and administrative powers over Mount Athos - I don’t want to enlarge upon the legal details because they are complicated namely EU treaties, Greek Constitution etc -as it is an integral part of the Greek territory and the “Mother Church” title of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople spiritually and ecclesiastically guides and governs the autonomous monastic state.

  • @PoliticswithPaint

    @PoliticswithPaint

@@stylianospallas490 Thanks for the input! You are definitely right, officially the monasteries on Athos answer only to Constantinople. However, in practice, the non-Greek monasteries also answer to their respective head of church - in some cases probably more so than to the ecumenical patriarch. The most striking example is the Russian-Orthodox monastery St. Panteleimon, which of course has the additional problem that there is an ongoing schism between the Russian-Orthodox church and the church of Constantinople. As you say, Orthodox Church politics are quite complicated and messy, and often what's officially the case looks very different in practice.

Yeah, the only people who live there are those completely dedicated to spiritual development. It’s not like it’s just a normal country that outlaws women. I see it more as how in most monastic traditions, men and women are in separate monasteries. They could just ban everyone from coming unless you are a monk but they decided to allow some people, you just have to follow their rules. One of which is only men are allowed. I really don’t see how this affects almost anyone. I would assume the women who would want to come are devote Orthodox, which would in turn mean they probably respect the tradition of the monks.

Technically women lived on the mountain before since there are burials of women from medieval times there. Most likely labourers or the wives of labourers. So the more traditional thing would be to revert to that state of affairs rather than having Greece enforce a law and jail sentence. You also have the problem of the monks engaging with other non-monkish activities such as loans, and the buying and selling of property in Greece to build investment portfolios, along with inviting Vladimir Putin and other heads of state to the Mountain regularly. Why do you think it is that all these non-religious activities are considered ok but the idea of a woman simply setting foot on the peninsula is a crime?

Hi Cogito, one important detail. Back in the WWII the monks of Mount Athos didn't ask for Germans to be under their protection just because...After Greece's victory over the Italian invasion, Germany together with Italy and Bulgaria orchestrated a combined attack. They all invaded Greece and separate the country into administrative zones. Bulgaria took parts of the north, parts that wanted to have since the Balkans wars. Bulgarians in Greece wanted to annex parts of Greece...so, in those areas many atrocities happened and the local population was forced to leave...along that line, bulgarians attacked Greek Orthodox churches and monasteries, stripped them from their relics and replaced them with Bulgarian priests. So Athos, since it was known to be the most desirable Monastic community of all Orthodoxs and many wanted to capture before (bulgarians, Russians etc) had a very well understanding of the situation...being under Germans it will not just provide them with some safety but actually to protect the history of all this place to keep standing without facing a nationalistic neighbor who would take their relics and replace them with bulgarians. It is quite important fact about the ongoing "fight" these people give, about retaining their old legacy but also ethnography as group since the early medieval times...I was very sad not hear about their understanding reasons, it sounded more like they acted opportunistic which is exactly what they didn't

The reason why The Holy Virgin Mary was the only woman who's allowed to step foot on Mt. Athos was because, according to Orthodox Christian tradition, The Holy Virgin was there when she was on the way to visit Lazarus (the guy Jesus ressurected from death) in Greece. She was with John the Apostle in some traditions, because he was her caretaker as she got so much older by then. The Holy Virgin went from Jerusalem to Greece by boat, but the boat was stranded on the island where the mountain is. She saw the mountain & loved the vibe or something, so she prayed to God that the mountain could be a holy place on earth. God granted it & the natives converted to Christianity not long after. As monks came in, they dedicated the mountain for The Holy Virgin Mary because of this.

No idea why it might be. Even in the 18th century fishermen are reported to have broughts their wives with them when stopping at Athos. It could be that in the last 1-2 centuries Athos has come to rely less of trade and craft and more on donations and tourism and so can harden some rules or may even be hardening their rules as the rule becomes more famous and becomes kind of a circular reasoning type thing. The monks are quite well known for having very reactionary views in response to change. But that's just a quick analysis.

The is no law in Saudi Arabia that all humans are equal and that men and women are entitled to the same rights. Unlike in Greece and the EU which do in fact have laws against discrimination based on gender which means that Athos is breaking those laws. I have no problem with Athos doing that, I believe autonomous regions can do whatever they want, but Athos wants to be autonomous and ALSO claim EU tax payer money to support itself. That's where most people find a problem. There is also the issue of the logic behind the ban. if the monks said the mountain belongs to Mary and therefore no other women are allowed and just left it there it would draw less criticism. But they constantly state that women are inherently sinful and sexual temptresses which is misogynistic. There are no female monasteries that ban males. In Christian monasteries for women male priests still frequently visit to perform mass. There is no prison sentence for entering female monasteries. Female gyms exist because women have been harassed at mixed gyms and want to go somewhere where they don't have to worry about that. If the monks were constantly being groped and harassed by women and then banned them I wouldn't have a problem with that either. There is nothing wrong with single sex spaces. But you can make them wrong by creating and maintaining them on sexist logic.

And then there are places where no one regardless of gender is allowed to visit...unless you're a shorebird. This is the case with North Brother Island off the coast of the Bronx. It was home to Riverside Hospital that housed patients with quarantinable diseases like tuberculosis. The place is haunted because of Mary Mallon, nicknamed Typhoid Mary who lived and died there. All the buildings on the island are extremely dilapidated. After this, different kinds of shorebirds started thriving there. Because of these two reasons, they don't allow visitors between March and September due to shorebird breeding season, and even during the time you technically can, they still won't let you unless you have "compelling academic and scientific purposes that are a benefit to NYC Parks". It gets stranger too! Nearby is another haunted island called Hart Island. Basically, MANY people are buried there (more than one million; from Civil War to the pandemic) and it also had dilapidated buildings that the city ordered to demolish in 2021. They restrict access to this island to the public unless you're visiting a loved one buried there (which they offer visits twice a month) or you're the media.

Hello from Greece. One correction please on a very important matter: The patriarch of Istanbul is NOT the "Pope of Orthodoxy" not even on spiritual matters. That's a huge misunderstanding. Thanks!

I'm not even sure if you are from Greece. The title of the Patriarch is Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople...no one in Greece says Istanbul even when about the city alone. "Patriarch of Istanbul"?????? Lol there's no even such a thing The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople is the spiritual leader of all Orthodoxs and is the "first among equals" since the days of the Byzantine Empire and recognized as such by all Orthodoxs. Only a Turk would have call the Ecumenical Patriarch just as a patriarch and of Istanbul 😂🤣😂 Please say something in Greek...lol

@@vanmars5718 I gave you my answer in greek although your message was not very polite. In english all people know this city as Istanbul, and many Greeks abroad call it like that. Why do you try to correct me on my statement? The "Pope of Orthodoxy" is not accepted by any orthodox for any Patriarch. Not even on spiritual issues as every orthodox knows (according to Orthodoxy) even the Patriarch could be wrong and a simple member of the Church who is not even priest could be right.

@@kravatarnihailes6489 Hear to me more carefully. The title is "Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople"...not because I'm sayin it...That's his title! There's no such a thing as Patriarch of Istanbul...no matter how the city is called is the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. You should check the encyclopedia. And indeed he is the spiritual leader of all Orthodoxs and he still has some privileges among all other patriarchs in various matters. So, your comment in reality is highly distorting and false. Δεν ξέρω τι ακριβώς νομίζεις και πόσο στην κοσμάρα σου ζεις...άκου εκεί Πατριάρχης Ιστανμπούλ. Στείλε μου στα ελληνικά παρακαλώ

@@vanmars5718 You can think about me whatever you like. You can talk to me rude etc by the safety of this platform. I have nothing to prove to you and of course I will not send you any personal information to confirm who am I. You do not represent all the Greeks and neither all the orthodox people. If you can not understand the "first amoung equals" and that the turn "Pope of Orthodoxy" is not right in any sence it is not my problem. Have a nice day. Find another person to argue in this way. It is pointless for me.
