The Erector Spinae Muscles
The Erector Spinae muscle actually consists of three columns of muscles, the Iliocostalis, Longissimus, and Spinalis, each running parallel on either outer side of the vertebra and extending from the lower back of the skull all the way down to the Pelvis.
The Erector Spinae provides the resistance that assists in the control action of bending forward at the waist as well as acting as powerful extensors to promote the return of the back to the erect position.
During full flexion (i.e., when touching fingertips to floor), the Erector Spinae Muscles are relaxed and strain is borne entirely by the ligaments of the back.
On the reversal of the movement, the Erector Spinae in conjunction with the Hamstrings and Gluteus Maximus muscles (buttocks) is primarily responsible for the extension of the back (straightening of the spine) as well as more specific movements such as the extension of the neck and sidewards movement of the head.

This needs a little correction. These are extensors not flexors. They do not cause the back to lengthen as in the picture. They cause the back to shorten like a back bend movement.
greatest gratitude and appreciation to Jonatan Kuttner for your wisdom supreme knowledge and excellent teaching skills. Thank you very much.
He said arch and the picture shows the back being stretched in the wrong direction.
No, contracted they don’t make you “arch” your back. It's just the opposite. Relaxed muscles make you "arch" your back. Otherwise, that's why they're called spinal erectors. Logical, isn't it?

Mate he probably means arching it the other way

Back arching is when you contract - back rounding is when you relax afaik

I've had knots and stiffness, muscle pain in this area for a year now. Ankylosing spondylitis. Thanks for this. Makes sense as to why it hurts when I breath.

How to stretch them? Just arch the back?

This muscles don’t make you “arch” your back, the abdominals muscles do. If you want to stretch them you should do back extension exercises, yes you can also flex the spine and you’ll feel them but not as much
