"If you have to look along the shaft of an arrow from the wrong end, if a man has you entirely at his mercy, then hope like hell that man is an evil man. Because the evil like power, power over people, and they want to see you in fear. They want you to know you're going to die. So they'll talk. They'll gloat. They'll watch you squirm. They'll put off the moment of murder like another man will put off a good cigar. So hope like hell your captor is an evil man. A good man will kill you with hardly a word."

Classic TV series becoming films or film franchises and actually being successful is a rarity. One is Mission:Impossible and the other is The Equalizer. One individual to even up the odds for the innocent. Bringing the pain to the bad guys that deserve it. I loved the classic tv series (1985-1989) with the late Edward Woodward since childhood. It was revamped into a new original series with Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall/co-producer (since 2021, 3 seasons). To have this great actor/filmmaker collaboration make something like this is very rare. Denzel as McCall/co-producer and Antoine Fuqua directing didn't try to copy the show, beat for beat (except for the last shot). I saw it in the IMAX format and it became Denzel's highest grossing film ever until it's sequel outgrossed it, 4 years later.

In Kung Fu legends there is a type of character known as a "Hidden Master". This is usually someone who, after a lifetime of training and battle has reached the absolute pinnacle of their skills, but grown weary of violence and just wants to live a peaceful, secluded life, maybe as a farmer or some other menial job. In the stories, they usually are disturbed from their retirement by an arrogant young bad guy who doesn't look past the mild exterior and hurts someone they care about, awakeniing a sleeping dragon. The moral of the stories is usually, don't offend strangers as you never know what they may be capable of. Also, never underestimate an old warrior. They've just had more time to learn how to fight, and if they have reached old age then it's because they have never lost.

_US_ TV version (you can tell by the 'z' :). For an earlier (late 60s/early 70s) _sort of_ British TV version of 'The Equalizer', _also_ starring Edward Woodward, there was 'Callan' which, if you squint a bit, was _kind of_ like Robert McCall pre-retirement (but UK intelligence services rather than CIA and also grubbier and more cynical, with undercurrents about class). Similar to the fan-canon that Sean Connery's John Mason in 'The Rock' is _actually_ an older James Bond, some saw Woodward's McCall as an older David Callan.

Vivian (Robert's wife opened up the possibility of him having a normal life). He faked his own death to get away from his past and thus his promise to her, he'd not go back to being that person. Him dealing with her death heightened his OCD and if you noticed he didn't sleep until he killed Slavi and his crew. That gave him a purpose, to help those who couldn't help themselves

It's because these movies didn't cost a lot to make(by modern Hollywood standards), it was a critical success, and Denzel actually loves the character.

Rule #1: If you see Denzel Washington checking his watch, run. This movie and John Wick came out a month apart - this was first, but John Wick was already done filming. Susan told him that he killed the Russians after Slavi put Alina in the hospital because "that's what you are." She added that the part of him that died when his late wife Vivian did was not the part Vivian had loved most, and that it was that part that led him to kill the Russians. Then she said, "Go be you." That was the permission he came for. Trivia on the book list: in the last scene, where he's Craigslisting for rescue missions, it shows the book from that list that he was now reading: The Invisible Man. Favorites and recommendations: Glory, Equalizer 2 and 3, Man On Fire (there's even an Easter egg link between Man On Fire and The Equalizer 3), Fallen, Antwone Fisher, American Gangster. I haven't seen Training Day yet, but plan to watch it soon.
