Marton Csokas *nails* the role of a villain here. He makes this movie every bit as much as Denzel, and whenever the two of them share the screen you can't take your eyes off.

If I may enter a difference of opinion,,,,Teddy's respect for Frank all but fell off the map after the restaurant scene, so when Looney cut Frank's sad intercession short, the little head gesture Teddy gave to Frank, whether he saw it or not was more to say, "whoa, can't believe he went there on ya" as if it was a taunt as to how this low level Irish boss sees the same thing in Frank that he does

But just remember that the man who allows himself to lose his self-control and, as you put it .. "was compelled" to react like an automaton, like a mere knee jerk nerve fiber reacting without any choice at all in the matter, under a faux duress that he himself voluntarily subjected himself to, and so very easily after "enduring" a string of mere words, child's playground insults at best, is, frankly, a complete fool who sets himself up moment by moment for a lifetime of letdown and self-loathing. But don't get me wrong. Marton Csokas does a bang up job inhabiting the role and deserves major kudos for bringing to the screen a very believable case of a person engaging in such tragic self-sabotage. You can almost see him cowering behind a shaky veneer of cool self-assured machismo that requires great effort to display in order to hide the essential human weakness.

Smart people DO in fact survive long in a criminal career because A) They understand to NEVER underestimate ANYONE no matter how you may perceive outward appearances and B) Its better to make alliances than enemies. In this case Little John may have been smart but he let his personal biases and ego get the better of him, which was incredibly stupid because the Russians reputation is well known within the criminal arena. They are not people to be trifled with by other organizations or in some cases even law enforcement. John was simply core stupid in a moment that he could not afford to be.

I love what they did with Pedro. They are two different types of characters, Pedro's character is about the banality of evil. Killing a friend of decades, a woman who trusted him, while pretending he's not evil. His internal monologue would have been, Jesus, honey, why did you fight it so hard? I sent two men you didn't know, so your last moments wouldn't have to be betrayal. And yet here we are, because you just couldn't give in, for once. He'd turn it around in his head, make it her fault. These are the men that have faux guilt and say, why'd you make me hit you? I write characters like Pedro's often, and they chill me more. In my life, I always see the ones like Teddy coming clearly, which makes all the difference. The ones who have convinced themselves they are a good man, who just 'has to' do evil things, with such banality...those are the ones that get me. I'd say dealing with him was much more difficult for Robert too.

This is a great scene!!... It truly shows the similarities yet extreme differences between the rolls of Denzel in this movie.... and his counterpart who clearly shows he is calculating and reserved and very professional yet with very evil intentions as far as his capabilities!!!... yet seems to draw a line right there!!_____ when it seems like out of nowhere the true inner demons of this man just lash out with such evil intent!!! Not having control and unleashing himself upon an unexpecting person beating him almost to death!!!... having to other people shot and killed right there in the room as just part of collateral damage... All that coming about in about 18 seconds!!... yet on the flip side Denzel's character is of someone truly in full control knowing his capabilities and professionalism!!!... and actually sets his watch as his actions are already precalculated and shocked the hell out of these five guys who think they've got him right where they want him!!!. .18 seconds later they're all laying dead or dying on the ground!!!.... that's a very powerful connection that most people don't see of the two main characters in this movie!!!
