The Lancia team were such pirates. I love how they did every thing they could think of to stack theirs in their favor- using ice melt on the course, changing tires mid race, etc. This was when motor racing was exciting and brash.

I mean...they did walk the edge between cheating and ingenuity. However, many people don't realize that everybody did. Few got caught. Only difference - Lancia used to cheat in their own very unique and crazy way. Just like everything they've ever done.

I couldn't agree more, since NASCAR used to be the same way. The 60s and 70s were the big experimentation years, everyone seeing what they could get away with. It probably all came to a head with the Plymouth Superbird of 1970, going 200mph in the days when its competition struggled for 160mph. But following the oil crisis and a string of deaths, cars got slower, restrictions got tighter, and now, thanks to foreign meddling, the loudest motorsport short of drag racing is little more than a spec race.
Pure car history, love it.

Love this piece and James's Ford-Ferrari piece. Especially enjoy the winking "reenactments" - they embellish the documentary footage with something a little more visceral, allow Jeremy to add the trademark TG humor, and avoid the inherent cheesiness of documentary reenactments. Great, great stuff.

One of the best TGT or TG skits ever. Interestingly one bit of info wasn't mentioned. The tyre size rule was quizzed by Lancia if they could fit wider rear tyres and thinner front tyres keeping the same total contact area, being of course more suitable for the RWD cars, but this logical proposal was declined. They may have been competitive for another year had the FIA allowed it.
