Isn't it ironic, that which the emperor wished to avoid; he unwittingly fulfilled. He was the catalyst to his own abduction.
The Emperor must have felt remorseful about destroying House Atreides with the wave of a hand; given the fact that he was fond of Leto and even shared his blood. I think that the scene where he's playing a boardgame with Irulan reflects that, because Shaddam looks conflicted and kind of sad. His bitterness and jealousy comes out when he tells Paul that his father was a weak man. Which of course, is a projection.
@BurningSpear213

He did. In one of the early chapters of the book he feels pity for Leto and wishes that things could have been different between them, but the political fact that the Atreides had become so influential, in his mind, forced his hand.
@deez26788

Yep he had wished that leto was his son
The emperor's motives are actually quite simple: It all comes down to Jessica's betrayal of the Sisterhood in bearing a son. The Emperor could not have a royal successor except through Bene Gensserit approved matches as outlined by the Bene Gessserit-Guild treaty. The Bene Gesserit in turn ensured that he had only daughters. Their plan, clearly, was to marry a Atredeis daughter to a Harkonen heir, ending that blood feud, and simultaneously producing a male Kwisatz Haderach. That male in turn could be married to Princess Irulan or a similar female Corrino placing the Bene Gesserit Controlled Kwisatz Haderach onto the throne. In that scenario, Shaddam IV has nothing to be envious of in Duke Leto as they both are left without male heirs to continue their own lines and without the political support that such assured succession could bring. But that scenario is not what happened. Jessica doesn't just accidentally bring about a Kwisatz Haderach a generation early and prevent a crossing back to the Harkonnen by bearing a son, she also elevates the political aspirations of Atredies destabilizing the political dance that had been intended. With a son and a male line inheritance, Atredies is able to contemplate building a military strength to rival even the Saurdukar... Without such an heir, they would not have tried for so bold a long term plan as military supremacy. (It takes many generations to build such strength... and thus many generations of assured leadership).
In Shaddam’s case, fear did turn out to be the mind-killer.

It's made pretty clear in the book that running Arrakis is a pain for everyone involved. Paul criticizes the Guild for not being willing to take direct control of spice production, even though they're totally dependent on it. In fact, this is a recurring element of the book, with rulers being unwilling to get their hands dirty themselves and putting the responsibility on others. No one wants the responsibilities and hassles that come with power, just the benefits. That is, until Paul comes along and moves the Imperial throne to Arrakis.

I am missing one crucial element, even in the casting for the new roles in part 2: Count Hasimir Fenring. As closest adviser to the emperor, his role as supervisor on Arrakis, his marriage to the Bene Gesserit Margot and last but not least his intricate connection to Paul for being a failed Kwisatz Haderach should make him an important personality in the story of Dune, more even than the emperor. Shaddam succeeded relatively when Fenring was involved, failed miserably when not. Shaddam was blunt, Fenring way more subtile. Shaddam could only remain the powerful emperor of the known universe because he had such an excellent advisor. But we will see, maybe a big surprise in part 2

I am not a fan of the Dune books. Not seen the films. I have only read the the first three books and found them getting worse with every volume. The first I would rate a 7 on the scale of 1 to 10, the second (Messiah) a 5 and the third (Children) a 3. There are many repeats in the books, especially in book with the children. The end of that book is very unsatisfying with Leto covering himself with sandtrout becoming immortal and a god. The Count you mention is only present in the first book, and his wife wanted to preserve the Harkonnen genes (sleeping with the heir of the Baron). But they don’t show up the second and third book. I also expected to see more af them.

@@delichonnl7744 Maybe I got a bit ahead of myself, because in the many books written Fenring becomes more and more important to the story, but indeed, not in the first 3 volumes, youre right about that. I think Shaddams jealousy is the prime factor I’m his downfall followed by his insecurity which led him to take actions to insure the sadakar were completely loyal to him which also caused them to become a bit soft. When not on campaign they got what they wanted in food woman houses. All of it led to him going to Arrakis were he was vulnerable, if he was not on Arrakis he might have recovered, the sadakar might have grown softer but they were still a tough fighting force that had the respect of the fremen.
Ultimately fear is what brought Shaddam low. Fear forced him into making several critical tactical mistakes. Fear forced him into weakening his greatest tactical asset, the Sardukar. Fear forced him to go to Arakis. The prayer "Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." Shaddam never faced his fear and brought him to his ultimate demise. Fear even brings Paul down in the later books. He fears the golden path and that fear ultimately claims his life. Lehto III faced that fear, started down the golden path, and saved humanity.

Not so much villains, as doing what must be done, in their own eyes, of course. A desire to control the parameters of one's environment in order to secure survival is not at all evil. It's not even evil to utterly destroy one's competitors. It's merely part of the dance of life and survival. The game of life is never pretty, moral or fair, but it must be played nevertheless. A lot of the characters, both likeable and unlikeable, in the DUNE universe, are villainous or eminently capable of or willing to engage in villainous actions. Just like real life. It's part of the beauty and charm of DUNE. It's one of the reasons why this series has always fascinated me. I feel privileged that this was the very first space sci fi that I have ever read.

I really hope that in the second movie there is some real effort put forth to explain the Emperor's place in the story. It just hasnt been done well in any adaptation so far. My personal opinion of course. Very much enjoyed the first movie - excited for the second.
If you can't beat them, join them. Marry a daughter to Paul and cement an alliance with an up and coming House that may prove useful. Of course, that would be more viable before the whole Arrakis business. I doubt Leto would object to tying his house to the Emperor's. If only a male heir can sit on the throne and having a son with a secondary wife is not allowed, that's probably the Emperor's best option. Doing it the book's way may extend his personal rule for a little longer, but does not settle the problem of lack of male heir and line continuity.

We're viewing the first novel from Paul's point of view which heavily favors House Atredies. It was never confirmed or denied in the novels (as far as I know, I've only read Herbert's six and don't considered the others to be canon) if the Duke actually was planning to make a move against the emperor. If he was, the Emperor's decisions were not made out of jealousy and fear, but out of rational practicality.

It was seen as part of the Harkonnen-Atreides feud. But, critically, all the Houses were in orbit above Arrakis during the battle of Arrakeen. And once Paul raised the Atreides flag, they stood down and did not intervene, allowing Paul and his Fremen to defeat the Emperor and dictate terms.
Christopher Walken will probably turn out to be a good choice, but I think Charles Dance would have been the best to play the emperor. Still, I am looking forward to part 2.

I hope the emperor gives Paul the "lion vs the jackals" motivational speech.
He should have arranged a hot war between Atreides and Harkonnen. Atreides would have won, eventually, but it would have cost them a lot of resources and manpower and given them a new world or worlds to have to focus on rebuilding. While Leto was busy with that he could have been just a bit kinder to his other nobles and built his own Atreides-like persona to secure his power. Maybe have the Sardukar eliminate the Benejeserit (sp).

The problem was the lack of political support for it. Leto had bailed Shaddam out, which was one of the reasons the other great houses looked to him for leadership. It was a driving factor of jealousy, wherein Shaddam feared that Leto would try to usurp him. Despite being cousins, Leto didn't want to be Emperor, yet Shaddam was ultimately fearful of a man who could still very quickly gain support throughout the lansraad, and if he so chose, launch a successful coup. The fear was justified after Shaddam found himself almost entirely indebted to Leto, but couldn't fully chalk it up to Leto just living up to his title of Duke Leto the Just.

It's a bit of simplification to say the emperor was envious. That's how the Baron and/or Piter understood his motives, but iirc some of the heading quotes somewhere make it clear that he had absolutely no choice about going after the Duke. The Duke's popularity meant no matter how loyal he was to the emperor, other people would have conspired against the throne in his name and would try to blackmail him into supporting their conspiracies. That's something that happens quite a lot in empires. Duke Leto is aware that Arrakis is a trap, but he hopes that his gambit with the Fremen will give him enough protection to keep the Emperor at bay long enough to maybe marry off Paul to Irulan and make the issue moot.
Walken gave more depth to the role in his limited screen time. You can feel his age and the weight of the throne causing him to make drastic and rash decisions. And his speech to Paul about “ruling from the heart” is dark foreshadowing.
The one thing that caused his downfall was the Sisterhood. They helped Paul come into being and crippled the Emperor at every turn. They hoped to control the universe through Paul but he came to soon and they were not ready and could not control him.
Very enlightning
This is a good business management video

Do you think Leto had real aspirations for his house taking the throne?
In the film, spoiler alert 🚨 , Shaddam did explain to Paul his reasons for killing his father and attempt to kill house atreides boiled down to “He ruled with a heavy heart” and the other line “your father was a weak man”. I thought maybe Shaddam meant that Leto was too soft of a leader to rule and his death wasn’t due to jealousy as much. An interesting take I took from that final scene 🎬. This adds a bit more complexity to the emperor.
No, it's not envy, it's fear. He feared that Leto I would build an army as powerful, if not more powerful, than his Sardukar and rebel with the other houses against his imperial rule. Leto I was popular amongst the other houses, if he could show them that he had a greater military power, they may have joined him for a bigger cut of CHOAM amongst other asks. The events on Dune was the Emperor gardening his feudal state, maintaining his power and the balance of power; it was fear, not envy.

It wasn't envy, It was fear that the Atredies and there backers in the landsrad would stall the emperor's plans and get in the way of his wealth increasing. He was a threatening voice in the landsrad.

It was both
thought casting of Christopher Walken was a bit off, I mean we are talking about an Emperor that rules over an entire universe....but then rethinking, this was an Emperor is was very insecure despite being a cunning ruler. Otherwise he wouldn't have cared about the strength of the Atreides and if he was, would have destroyed them himself with just enough pretext, selling it as a preemptive strike on traitors who were trying to launch an rebellion against him or something.

Cunning? If it wasn't for fenreng he wouldn't even be on the throne. Fenreng was the real power. Shaddam didn't like exerting himself though he did have a taste for bloodlust
Dune is a classic and a prime example of human nature. Human beings are so predictable and humanity always makes the same mistakes over and over again.

Are you sure you're not Paul or Leto II?😉
it is usually better to embrace your enemy that he cant draw his sword... if he let irolan marry paul before the incidents on arrakis...
wasnt the duke kinda machiavellian?
My biggest issue with Dune as a whole is how long the corrino family was in power. Would have been better if the throne was swapping from house to house throughout the ages - a game of thrones situation. Would have made the atreides a more realistic threat.

Look at today's royal houses even though you hear about different names they are still related usually by marriage. An English princes married the tsar of Russia and the late king Phillip was German most don't realize Windsor was a German nobility they changed the name during WWII.
omg. Cristopher Walken is Shaddam? lol
Christopher Walkin embies no man
Doesn't the book make it very clear that the Emperor and Lieto are strikingly similar in appearance? They are actually closely related? I would have liked to see Oscar Issac return to play Emperor and dramatize this twist of the story. Nothing against Walken, mind you.
A dangerous, jealous Man.
Knowledge is power, and I think Emperor Shaddam lacked knowledge. That ignorance fed his insecurity and fear. Specifically, not understanding the spice nor the key ecological processes that derive it. Each time spice came up, another nail was driven into his coffin, because he never understood the real power he was facing.

Is this channel narrated by a person or is it an AI voice reading a script?

I'm reading book 2 and already dislike Paul and actually long for Shaddam Corrino. As some of the comments suggest, if he didn't come to the planet, he could have survived a bit longer.
Didn't Shaddam poison his father?

Well he had fenreng do it and also his older brother first
So if the emperor wanted to keep power he could have married Irulan to Paul it would keep the Atreides at bay the Duke would feel eventually our family will rule well maybe. Since the great houses are ruled by fear of the Emperor and his forces you as the Emperor will see enemy around every corner or in Dune speak on every Heighliner. I postulate an ideal what if Shaddam was not played by Christopher Walken but by Jeff Goldblum think about it he can apply Chaos Theory to everything

The emperor should have married his daughter to Paul from the get go. Trying to Destroy them was always foolish.. without male heir he never really had any other option but to give up the throne anyway.

I don't think he realized it. Mohaim certainly wasn't going to tell him she sterilized him. He must have done something to her personally. I mean look what she did to the baron.
