Great video, been watching it in segments...... great stuff The fact that entire cities were abandoned.... suggests more than famine and war... doesn't make sense people 100% abandon a place, when it can be pillaged for stone or used as lookout points and highground during battles etc.... also the whole mayan area is rich fertile land, with year-round moist soil in the humid forests........ Even if cities experienced crushing droughts/famines..... at least 100 people would probably stay at the cities as the other 50,000 or more leave....... makes no sense that everyone would leave Since the decline was mostly 780-930..... my guess is the mayan cities hit a climax of art and culture, and in the decline and fracturing of mayan states--- populations declines and reverted back to smaller tribal survival means, so agriculture declined and mayans eventually had to hunt for food, thus finding no use in the giant cities of their ancestors and eventually creating new cities to the north where the humid inhospitable jungle was a bit less inhospitable..... the cities eventually overgrowing and being lost to history
I am so so happy the extent of coverage this was. ot makes me so proud to be Guatemalan and hear that we also get attention on the historical records. Pete, I am deeply thankful for the effort on producing this piece. Pete Kelly made some of the best work in this documentary as a Nicaraguan born there, our culture is surrounded by European cathedrals and European influences everywhere. What an insult for our civilization to be buried and thankful for all the time and dedication Pete Kelly put into this it meant a lot and even got emotional at times because my ancestors did not deserve that whatsoever. Will keep spreading kindness and manifesting abundance for our culture to never be forgotten and / or no longer buried in the past.

This is one of the best documentaries I've seen in a long time. It is not possible however, to tell the entire story of the Maya in such a short period of time. The ancient people built cities throughout a massive area that would encompass many countries today. There are also hundreds of known archeological sites yet to be excavated by legitimate acceptable services in order to preserve the integrity of their contents. Thus, an excellent documentary to be sure, the story is incomplete and not possible to be known in total by anyone living today.

This was absolutely great. I watched it over a few days. Thank you for doing this. Looking forward to seeing more of your content.

i really like the inca and how if they had of had like an extra 30 years the spanish would probably never have conquered them
Pete, Michael Wood has been an inspiration to so many historians. I have loved his books and films (especially Legacy) since I started reading his books in high school. You very much follow in his footsteps. Thank you for your documentaries. They are so well done. This is is particularly spectacular - on par with the Sea Peoples documentary.
That was awesome!! A very well spent 4&1/2 hours!! I've heard most the bits and pieces, here and there, as I try to stay current with new findings. But what you did here... an absolutely amazing, huge task, that you put it all in one video, is the best I've ever seen!!! I am Maya, my father was born in Chiapas and passed away when I was young. So I have a tremendous interest in as much information about my ancestors that I can get. I recognize that the research is labor intensive and very grateful that you are obsessed in this topic! But that you're delivery was great also! Thank you!!!
Love learning about the Mayan culture and history. It just amazes me how new technology like lidar is helping us discover whats buried under the forests of the Amazon/ Americas. The culture, the beliefs, the religions of the past and connections to present day fascinate me. I like watching What on Earth, Strange Evidence on the Science channels, History shows in general, so this was a great documentary.
This was amazingly well produced. What a gem of a find this channel is. I can’t wait to delve into my next video! ❤
I learned things in three hours that my private education didn't even mention in 12 years. My son is Mayan and now and tell him about his people, thank you.
Greetings from Sweden! I am so grateful for and impressed by your awesome work with this channel. Thank you, Sir!
I finally got to watch this in its entirety on a long flight and thoroughly enjoyed it. I learned a great deal of detail from it about the conquest of the Yucatan that I had not previously known. Thank you for making this. I really enjoyed your journey to El Mirador, i just completed my fourth walk there myself, I'm so glad to see Nakbe covered too. It's a site which is often overlooked.
I visited Tulum, Coba, and Chichenitza. This is the most full and detailed movie about Maya history I have ever watched. Thank you so much about your work!!!
I know what I'm doing for the next four and half hours!😀

Excellent video. I have visited multiple sites in southern Mexico but you have just added more than a few to my list, Bonampak for sure. I appreciate your summation at the end of the video. The arrogance of modern thought is astounding. Societies that evolved with nature and starlight have a different view of the earth and therefore a different way of interacting with it. I look forward to more of your videos.
This is so fascinating! Thanks for shining a light on pre-Columbian history. It's so often over looked.

Columbus had nothing to do with history. He wasn't even notable, he didn't discover anything. Americans were always there. They were called Navajo and hundreds of other tribal names.

These bring so much comfort and education to me the same time. Your efforts are truly appreciated.
I have just discovered this gem tonight. Thank you for putting together such an extensive and highly enjoyable journey through Mayan history. I'll be sharing this with many friends. Cheers from Canada.
I have been watching your stuff for 5 plus years now. I have been a fan for a long time. This is phenomenal. Bravo!
The best, most thorough documentary about the Maya I've seen.
Remarkable. What a commitment to the task of the documenting and telling of the human story, and in particular - a Mayan part of it. Thank you so much for your efforts and sharing! Your professionalism regarding education and production are really appreciated as well. A pleasure to watch and learn from.
Wow all I can say is wow how beautifully informing this documentary was! I have been so curious to learn about my indigenous Mayan ancestry and this has fulfilled me more than you know ! Thank you for this 🙂
Just finished watching it, loved it. The way you comunicate, your storytelling and your take on the events that took place witout taking sides.
Absolutely Incredible video Pete. I've watched it through twice now. Truly fascinating. Thank you for all your hard work on this. Can't wait for the next installment
Thank you for this beautifully done program. My 15 year old son, and I watched it a week before we are taking a trip to see Coba. It really helped with his understanding of Mayan culture.
I can feel your passion in your narration. Thank you for a beautiful documentary.
Video editing, audio, interesting AND educational, all just amazing. So glad I found your channel!
Fantastic video as always dude! Took me a few days to get through this one but was soo worth it! Bravo sir! Thoroughly enjoy your works
Missed this one Pete but I ALWAYS have to "feel" a time period also before I start to really love it AND of course when people like you and Cy are just kickin' it! Thanks Pete.
Great documentary! As someone from Tabasco I’ve always been deeply interested in the Maya culture, possibly more than in any other ancient culture, and this documentary made me remember why. Thank you for putting your time on making this amazing video, I’ll certainly read some of the books you mentioned.
well done. hard to find detailed Mayans documentaries. You did great job with the amount of detail! I really enjoyed and learned a lot which to me is the Perfect Documentary Combination type. I definitely will be watching more than once! :-) Thankyou for the hard work!
Wow, great job Pete!!! Thanks for sharing your love of history. The time and energy you've put into it really shows. Love your narrative style, your passion for the subject is obvious.
So, the Spanish answer to public human sacrafices, was publically torturing people to death? I'm sure that wasn't confusing the message at all.
Listening to this while driving to school makes me so happy. Thank you
1:30:00 - Oh dear god. The idea all of those documents being burned is heart-breaking. What incredible knowledge was lost by that mans actions? It really does make me sad to think those things were reduced to ashes.

@@oirampeceda2409 It's important to remember that from his perspective he was doing the right thing. Which is yet another reason for me to dislike religion. Honestly I hope we live in a more enlightened time but as things are it would seem we're slipping back into an age where destruction of knowledge and revisionism are becoming more popular. The most awful example being ISIS and their decimation of monuments, statues, art and everything else they could lay waste to in recent times.

@@laughingachilles what I consider worse is the misinformation of things, which is flourishing all around; tempting tidbits of information, everywhere! People on the internet who make comments that, you know, are the kinds that will use this information for bad. I, often, think that these will, more than likely, be the ones who will end up becoming wild killers, if the world's economies were to fall apart, like in Mad Max. Well, at least we know their ire from reading some of the posts. I will tell you my theory. Many of the books were burned, but many, many more are inside some underground vault at Vatican city.

@@mariocepeda1432 I'm more concerned with those who think they are the ones who always spot the misinformation or who only accept something if it comes from an "acceptable" source. The recent COVID pandemic should have taught people about just how untrustworthy a great deal of the mainstream media has become. It very much has come to the point where we all have to do our own research whenever possible and identify sources which tend to be accurate. I would love to see a full inventory of the Vatican archives, just as I would love to see a full inventory of the British Museum basements and a host of other massive storehouses which are either kept private or simply haven't been looked through in many years. The British Museum is notorious for the latter, with boxes from Victorian times turning up that have never been opened. God knows how much has been pilfered over the years to be sold to private collectors. With this said I doubt the Vatican kept the books mentioned in this video. They burned all manner of things because they were heretical.
