The Entire Beverly Hills Cop Franchise- Is The Heat STILL On?

Ойын-сауық

While Saturday Night Live, 48 Hrs and Trading Places made Eddie Murphy a star, it was 1984's Beverly Hills Cop that made him a household name. Street-wise Detroit cop Axel Foley is still considered by many to be his greatest role, and with a fourth film in the franchise, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley due out this summer, we're revisiting all three of his classic (and not so classic) Beverly Hills Cop films right here. So strap in because The Heat Is On!

I gotta soft spot for 3...the theme park stuff (exterior) was filmed here in the the bay area at (then Paramount's) Great America...plus i really like the orchestrated version of Axel F they used...the new NF film is better than 3, lol....and also has a fantastic score that uses the Axel F motif well.

Axel F did exactly what Top Gun did and it's unfortunate it didn't get a theatrical release, too. Nobody was looking for Top Gun Maverick to be Oscar level. Just be a strong action movie with a lot of callbacks and nostalgia. Show respect to the characters that the fans love and play all the musical queues we remember. Both Top Gun Maverick and Beverly Hills Cop Axel F did that. I missed Lisa Eilbacher's Jenny, though. Where bad sequels tend to be bogged down either just rehashing the previous film badly or worse, adding characters that don't fit, Axel F is kind of hit and miss there. Joseph Gordon Levitt works because he comes off like a slightly cooler and more smart-assed Judge Reinhold, but the manufactured drama between Axel and his daughter just felt forced. So when was she born exactly? Who is her mother? Based on her age, she would have been born around the time of BHC 3. But because they weren't planning anymore sequels, there's nothing in that movie that suggests he had a girl in his life at that time or even a fling. For me, it would have created even more drama, in a natural way, if Eddie had been so dedicated to his job in his own way that he didn't have kids. Obviously this is a homage, so you don't want to get too melodramatic, but having Axel end up single and lonely with no kids might have been the better call. Or if you want to throw in a daughter, have Axel discover he has a daughter during the film. Having her there the way she is makes Axel look like a complete douchebag inconsistent with the character. If he discovers somehow that he has a daughter he never knew about but she still resents him for not being there would have made more sense. The scenes with Rosewood and Taggert are obviously great and they still have incredible chemistry, which contrasts with the daughter scenes where it's just cliched father daughter squabbles and you know they're going to make up. Here's an idea. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character can be dating his daughter or engaged and he finds out somehow that way. Instead, we get all the "you were never there for me" tropes and cliches, and it bogs down an otherwise great homage. I have no problem with the actress or her performance. But her existence is forced rather than natural. I hate to quote another Val Kilmer movie, since I mentioned Top Gun, but it just raises too many questions, one the movie doesn't seem interested in or have time for. Otherwise, it does exactly what it sent out to do. Steven Berkoff is still the best villain of the series, but Kevin Bacon isn't completely out of place in this world. I could nit pick about some of the writing choices, but the film is just a love letter to the original and on that basis, it succeeds like Top Gun Maverick does. But it deserved a theatrical release. Hell, BHC 3 got one.

The first Beverly Hills Cop is a classic. I haven't watched the sequel, but don't mind the third one as much even though it seems despised. I just can't get over the fact that Eddie Murphy doesn't feel like the same character he played in the first film. I know we all change with age, but he plays Foley in a different way where it doesn't feel as natural as the first film. I started watching the fourth film, but his character feels like if Bill Cosby was Axel Foley not because he's older, but he seems to play the role in a less serious and more hammy kind of way. The first film he reminded me of a young hard nosed cop who could use his wits and humor to get out of a bad situation. In the sequels, he's just always humorous looking to be funny instead of being naturally funny. I'm not a die hard Beverly Hills Cop fan, but I do like the first film a lot and think Murphy is great in 48 hours and Coming to America. I just feel we don't see that Eddie Murphy anymore as if that side of Murphy has disappeared. This is a strange analogy, but I feel Murphy and Martin Lawrence had similar paths. Each were very funny in their early careers, but when their hair changed, they became less funny and seemed completely different. Murphy lost the afro from BH1 to a fade, while Lawrence did the opposite. He had the fade, but later grew the afro that you can see in the first Bad Boys. I know it's a weird analogy, but the change affected their comedy performances imo. Murphy became too clean and Lawrence kind of became less energetic. He is completely different from the first Bad Boys to Bad Boy 2 which is the character he continues to be.

I was disappointed by the cinematography (of all things) and editing in part 4. The vehicle action scenes never felt fast or dangerous even when people are flying off their vehicles. There's even a shot of Murphy making a casual, slow turn that looks like his car is sliding across the road. Other parts of the film look like they were shot for 16:9 and letterboxed in post to make the result seem more cinematic. Odd choices like digital zooms appear often and conversation shots are often chopped up to bits. I'd chalk all this up to a first time director and some cost cutting for Netflix. None of it breaks the movie, which is thankfully character-driven, and deserves something like a 6 or 7/10.

They couldn't make these films today. They are not politically correct and not PG-13. The other thing would be filming. They would use CGI not great set peices on site. They would use 4k but then do shallow focus which renders 4k poinless with the blur effect. It would not feel gritty and real. Then the actors would exposition everything not allow the audience to figure it out themselves. Nothing has been good in movies in 15 years or so its sad.

Do not get me wrong Maverick was excellent but it lacked a little of the magic Top Gun had where as Axel F had the magic the first 2 Beverly Hills cops have .. It felt like meeting old friends you have not seen for years and you carry on from where you left off...It is a shame that it was not brought out in Theatres because this is what we need in theatres ...Good old fashion action without any of this woke shit that is killing movies . This kind of movie is how movies are suppose to be a escape from reality for a few hours once i enter a theatre i want to forget what is going on outside of those doors and disappear into a unreal world just for a tic ... HOLLWOOD its time to go back to sleep and dream again .....Thank You NETFLIX and Eddie for doing a fantastic job in making a real movie that is badly needed .......Now i just have to wait for the Blue Ray so i can add to my collection
