The Backrooms shows one of humanity´s biggest fears. Having to explain every single level and entities with extremely long and detailed descriptions. Everything needing to have a logical explanation. This shows the fear of the unknown. We can´t bare not knowing anything about a place, or a creature. We need to give everything an explanation, so that we feel safe. We need comfort. The comfort of knowing every single detail about everything.

One of my favorite theories about the backrooms that might be the scariest is that every person who enters the backrooms perceives it differently, making any writing on it pointless and possibly dangerous.

@@CoolerFN15 that's my head canon. Supernatural by definition cannot be understood. I always imagined there's only 1 level. You're just a 3D being who rotated in the fourth dimension. There's a room corresponding W every place in our reality, but space behaves differently. When you "no-clip', you enter a warped infinite version of the space. I also like the reoccuring theme, that there's an unseen intelligence that created and maintains backrooms. Like a 4D demon or alien.

As cool and complex as this is, I like the idea of the back rooms just being a single level, having it just be outside of our reality. Think of it kind of like the matrix where we noclip through our own reality into the back rooms where our reality is continuing to be built and added upon. With certain entities that hunt you down because you’re not supposed to be their or something. I think it’s more horrifying and animalistic that way

Personally I like the various levels, but the entities ruined them. Things like the poolrooms or the infinite cafeteria are cool, but making the Backrooms extremely hostile is so bad. It basically removes the cool aspect from liminal spaces or infinite areas by adding stupid crap like Partygoers. Also, a lot of levels just don't fit. Backrooms should be either liminal (The first 9 levels, the poolrooms, the interior hotel) or atleast with some resemblance to ACTUAL REALITY (The small town, foggy NYC, etc). Levels like 404 or The Shady Grey are meh. So are levels which are hell or heaven, or have religious symbolism. This already ruined SCP lore, seeing Jehova in the Backrooms is so stupid.

My favorite version of the backrooms is the one that has no entities, and where the only sentient people are wanderers. The dread of meeting one is much worse and the places are the focus instead of the entities. When you meet a wanderer, you have to figure out what type of person they are - insane, would kill you for your supplies, helpful, ect. I like the idea of having to figure out the rules of each place and how/when/if to leave more than random entities.

I’m definitely in the more liminal back rooms lore camp, as in too many entities disturbs the creepiness and liminal vibe of the og back rooms that I think should be preserved in most additions, as that is what makes it unique, it’s vibe per say, and also a fear of the unknown is ideal, so think of what is better. Describing noises that may be heard in a level? Or a creature? For instance telling you that in the distilled water level there is a creature and describing it is dumb, but telling you “Occasionally splashing may echo across the still waters, but the source of this noise is yet to be identified” or something like that is much more fitting. Just splashing, like ambient noise occasionally in many of these levels, but then there’s the question of why and what is making the sounds. I think that should be the main form of back room entities, rather than just basically a rip off SCP foundation archive.

As awesome as the collective creativity on display for all of this is, I feel like the backrooms are a prime example of what happens when a horror setting is taken too far. The original post was short, vague and offered absolutely no reasoning or explanation to the concept. It was creepy and the idea of it was scary due to how little we knew about it. Now it's some collaborative Pen & Paper survival game where its entire structure and design are laid out and well known. You can progress, there are more or less clear rules as to how; it's laid out exactly what you will encounter on each level and how to best prepare for it. It's become an amazing "game" setting but lost almost all of the horror in the process by overexplaining and "Over-Ruling" it.

If people need to eat every day in reality to live, but every 30 days in the backrooms, then that also changes some other things. It takes 2 1/2 days to digest liquid It takes 1-2 months to digest food The average lifespan of people born in the backrooms is 2400 years, and can live as long as 3600 years. Being 1500 years old is considered elderly It takes 6-8 months for the an cut to fully heal, and 2 1/2 years for a large wound to heal. The scar from these wounds will go away after 30 years Bloodflow is 30x slower because of less heartbeat causing blood clots to pretty much be lethal, and also makes running dangerous and running out of breath a lot easier, and running out of breath for WALKING possible Every heart will beat at around 2-3 times per minute 1 day on earth is 30 days in the backrooms You only need to breathe once every 30 seconds normally, and the average person can hold their breath for 15 minutes and as long as 3 hours underwater Frostbite takes 2 days to set in Body temperature rises and lowers a lot slower, which makes cold levels explorable for longer without any warming gear, usually around 30 minutes to an hour before you become cold and 15 days before you die from hyperthermia Starvation takes ~1.7 years to happen, and is 3 years for an obese person Dehydration takes 3 months to be lethal. The purist view makes for a short, but extremely harrowing horror concept, while the expanded lore view works more for storytelling, as the terror and dread of having seemingly endless floors with different rules that make it near impossible to figure your way out of your own volition combined with implacably nostalgic locations contains apt resources for creating many different chilling stories taking place in the backrooms. I realize it all comes down to personal preference, but I think there’s equal merit found in both opinions of what the backrooms is.

The original backgrooms was a really great horror concept that was simple yet terrifying in its nature. The countless entities added really diluted that original uniqueness and were clearly created and drawn by children. Its a shame the entities are being considered as such a major part of the lore now.

From the age of 10-14 i had the same dreams, they started as nightmares til i was able to become slightly lucid in all my dreams and thats when they toned down and eventually went way. They always followed the same formula. I was in an endless repeating space. Generally it was my childhood houses, a house party, a school, mall, or a neighborhood. And i was either playing a game of tag or hide and seek, being followed by someone who wishes me harm, or i harmed someone and i am being tracked down for it. It was extremely rare that i would have one that didn't fallow this formula. But it greatly reminds me of the backrooms.

I personally think that the nature of what makes the back rooms scary is how simple and repetitive they are, I think leaving as much as possible to interpretation and keeping it shrouded in vagueness and mystery is much better than all the extended rooms, thus I think it’s much creepier as just level 0

  • @armandoarmandonis9947

May I share with you my interpretation I posted on reddit: My new way of thinking the backrooms The backrooms are of 3 main types: Corridors/corridors with rooms, indoor parking lots, public spaces. In the corridors we have, well, corridors, eventually with rooms (think of level 2 or level 3), in the public spaces we have places like hospitals, amusement parks (the only open-air liminal spaces as I intend them), offices, schools, airports and others places like those. We can then divide the public spaces in 4 categories: - Closing time liminal space (without people and with many dark spots, it should be night. Think of a school at night or an hotel only with the receptionist) - Opening soon (without people and without personal objects. Think of boxed offices with photos and paper sheets, but without them) - Moving out (Bare minimum forniture, think of a school only with the teacher's desk and some chairs, or an office with cardboard boxes and some tables and some chairs, maybe some vending machines and the last big indoor plants) - Just finished (A completely empty place. Like level 0) So we have a practically infinite number of levels and those levels are millions, even billions of miles large, and the levels you enter in cant be determined (only the pairs "public space - corridor" and "public space - indoor parking lots" can be somewhat determined). There are objects that you could normally find in that kind of place and the phenomena of each level are completely random (such as the lights periodically going out in level 1). The entities are MAINLY only visual/auditory, created by the backrooms to make you scared, anxious and to never make you feel safe in most environments. You could also be unlucky and see a real entitly trying to kill you. So in my view, I reject the idea of a stable and easy to traverse universe. There are only amusement parks as outdoor levels (I dont think that places like cities and neighborhoods can be described as liminal). There could be factions only in liveable levels, and even then it would be extremely unlikely to find another human. The only levels I'd keep as starting points are level 0 and level 1. There it would be easier to find other humans and those are good starting levels.

I think the backrooms would be a lot cooler and more interesting if there were no entities in them, as if the backrooms itself was the only entity that pulls you in with its liminal yet intriguing spaces that are seen in places like dead malls. Like a deep sea cave, you are drawn in, always wanting to see what's just around the corner and before you know it, you're in the depths of a never ending maze of backrooms with no way out because the walls are always changing in subtle yet significant ways. And you're completely and utterly alone with nothing but the blank walls to keep you company and the only sound to be heard is the buzzing of the worn out florescent lights that only seem to get louder and more scraping the longer you wander in the backrooms, completely lost with no sense of direction. There's no way to know how far you strayed from the empty storefront you wandered into when you were in that dead mall, and no way to know how long you'll be trapped here. I feel like the existence of entities and enemies like there are in video games kind of ruins the mystique of the backrooms and the true horror they're capable of. The backrooms doesn't need entities, the backrooms IS the entity.

For that matter, I think the scariest type of entity is one that can't be seen or knowingly interacted with, and you can't be sure it even exists. The real fear comes from the feeling you might be being watched or followed, or maybe a whisper you can't quite make out. Just the idea that something is around and that you're in danger while you're painfully lost in these randomly changing backrooms, is a truer horror to me than knowing there are actual monsters there. It's better to leave something to the imagination, your mind will try to fill in the blanks if these unnerving changes that could truly drive someone made. An enemy is far scarier when you know nothing about it, or whether or not it is actually there.

I mean the original floor 0 works but there's just no wriggleroom for anything more in that canon. Either it would have died in that image or it had to mutate more complexity. Level 0 alone is boring on purpose -- that's part of the horror. But there's nothing else to say. Describe the walls, floors, shadows, buzzing, infinity of mundanity, nothing left to say except describe the specifics of how your character goes nuts. Compelling -- but not complex enough for an extended universe. Trim and prune the lore to your own headcanon -- pick what works. It's a bit like SCP -- everything and nothing is canon.

Something that's literally above life or death themselves. It's a fascinating idea!! Every other addition just seems either like beating a dead horse or like adding completely unnecessary further information, that quite literally removes some of the charm of the original story post.

I think it would be so cool for someone to see a level they created on the show And the show could go on for as long as it wants because you could just go to a new perspective for a new season or something. Or coming back from a level only to see an earlier version of yourself in the backrooms doing exactly what you just did. i love how you can tell that it was children or tweens who wrote most of this stuff because of the fundamental lack of understanding of horror. the concept of the backrooms themselves are by far the scariest thing about them, but all this shit about sub levels and entities (i mean seriously? deathmoths?), it ruins the ambiance of the backrooms. the fear of the unknown is its driving force. there is no way to control how to get there, its accidental (so all this interacting with "glitched" objects again, shows a lack of understanding about the core concept of what makes it scary), and once you're there that's it, and endless series of hallways and rooms with that uncomfortable buzz. the original post spoke about if something heard you, and whilst yes i can agree that the idea of a creature/entity is scary, this entity having a physical description ruins the dynamic, it provides knowledge where there should be none. i think the best real world example of what im talking about would be cosmic horror, but its not quite the same. it just screams creepypasta which is a genre that by itself is poorly written, self insert, style of story telling that forsakes quality for edginess, and the same thing has happened to this once interesting concept. now its just well. not as interesting imo

This is a great video dude, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed with how people have changed the backrooms. I kinda miss when it was just you, nothing and everything at the same time. Endless rooms that all look the same. Sure, now it’s somewhat cool, but the concept is significantly less scary now that there’s colonies, entities and levels, because they all deviate from the utter loneliness, insanity and hopelessness that the original meant to give. But yeah, brilliant vid and don’t take this as criticism because it isn’t directed to you lol

To get a better idea of the canon you want to go for, make sure you check an article’s backlinks before saying anything concrete about it to see how other entities/objects/levels interact with that article.

A recent one I had was in a place that looked like a huge endless locker room/gym/empty hospital. Off white walls, floors, metal benches to sit on. And the government was there asking me how I got there because it was a top secret restricted zone. I told them I must have noclipped in. They took me into a room and said, "Hang on kid, we're gonna get you home." as I was sitting and waiting in the room, I woke up. Just a little freaky, and made me wonder if it really did happen and they just teleported me home or something lol

I remember that whenever I got a new FPS, the first thing I would do is look for the no clip code. Normally, you wouldn't find much of intetrest; usually plain holding boxes used to store the monsters before they are teleported into the playing area and the area that the skybox was built inside of then 'projected' into the actual level. However, you sometimes find areas used for cutscenes that the player was never meant to physically be in, as well as left over areas that were not entirely removed before the final revision of the game made it to publish. Duke Nukem (1996) had some humerous things that were hidden in these normally inaccessable areas that were put there by the creators for noclippers and those using the level editor to see.

I know this might sound weird but I have my own liminal space that I made up, it’s an enormous pine forest that goes on for thousands of acres. During the day it never gets brighter than twilight because the trees are so tall and old they block out all the sunlight. At night it’s pitch black. Entities come out at night but during the day it’s perfectly safe. I call it ‘the lone woods’, because you don’t ever see other people there. Entities in the lone woods are big, tall, shadow creatures that wander around like lost souls. They’re not violent but they’re very lonely and if you interact with them, most of them will talk to you forever and don’t want you to leave, on occasion some of them will try to kidnap you and keep you for company. I recommend avoiding contact with them, but if you give them a gift they might point you in the direction of the closest edge of the forest. If you don’t make eye contact with them they will leave you alone. The edge of the forest takes a very long to find but if you get that far without running out of food and water it comes out to a huge empty city that looks a lot like the city in the Disney movie Wall E. I’d like to think it’s a level of the back rooms that nobody else has discovered yet.

Honestly, I like how this was turned into SCP 2: Electric Boogaloo. Sure, it moved away from the essence of loneliness and repetivity of the original story, but it gave way for some very interesting stories to tell. On top of that, despite the lack of loneliness, you can still get that dose of liminality due to the enviornments themselves. Hell, I've had countless dreams that techinically contained liminal spaces, but some of those spaces still had crowds of people in them. Loneliness isn't what makes it scary in my eyes, it's how the Backrooms by design taps into that question of "What if our dreams were reality?" The fact that said possibility could also include our worst nightmares makes it terrifying.

I'm something of a backrooms boomer I think. I was really interested in it during its inception when most that was known about it was level 0 and levels 1-2 were slowly becoming more commonly known. One day I decided to Google it, looking for some liminal spaces to look at. Then I found the wiki. I felt a weird sense of dissilusionment upon seeing the sheer amount of levels. I remember seeing that red leaf forest and sketches of the deathmoth and smiler and had a very gutteral "look how they massacred my boy" moment. All the suspended realism, for me, had been shattered. I always held the belief that the backrooms were a place of momentary contemplation and sudden horror but now I can't tell it apart from some sort of bizzare blend of Fnaf and SCP (the latter of which I quite liked for a while). I want these people to enjoy the backrooms as I did but I can't help but shake the feeling that something has been lost. Then again, I'm just a backrooms boomer. A traditionalist in a tradition that has been gutted and painted colors that will be ever changing, never constant just like level 0 itself.

But watching this ice berg really shows all the flaws with the idea, namely the fact that anyone can contribute to it. So while you may have somebody like bartrOnius who keeps the deadly and frightening tone of the Backrooms in his telling, you can also have somebody who is playing Pokémon Go while exploring. I do see and understand your points with the Backrooms community. On the one hand, allowing basically anyone to write means more ideas that could be mediocre and contradict each other if left unchecked, compared to having only a few select writers creating more coherent ideas. On the other hand, Having more people contribute means that the fictional universe can develop to an astonishing size with many articles and tales (much like with the SCP community). Overall, I think this just boils down to whether or not you prefer quality over quantity, or quantity over quality. For me personally, I love just reading through page after page of articles that vary in quality (mostly because I've been an SCP fan since 2015), but I understand if others preferred if there were only a few articles that were of higher quality. Every popular concept or story out there has its legions of people writing their own version nowadays (In the 1800s-mid900s it was Sherlock Holmes, reaching even China with its gay shipping of Holmes and Watson), but it just messes with the thing it is. It's just, at some point if 50000 people start doing something online, what are you going to do, tell them not to? It's an extension of real life defeatism, I would like for the stuff I like to remain the stuff I like, and while people like you are basically spoiled, because you like most of the stuff there, I hate it. Some people make up a floor where entities are friendly but outwardly hostile, except they're not unless you try to leave, because they don't have a place like that where they're accepted irl and I don't like it, I don't like that this H O R R O R setting has turned into spin the wheel of genres. I think this could make a really good drama/horror show. Imagine watching the main character go through each level meeting new people as he goes a long introducing new elements to the story. The reason I think a show would be better and not a movie is because there's so much to accurately fit into a single movie unless you were to make many sequels of course but with a show you can actively get content every week an episode comes out and you can fit way more dialogue/story elements in it. If your a director then it's probably a lot more fun to have a good show then a good movie. So much perfection goes into making a solid movie, whereas you have much room for mistakes when making a show.

Well, according to certain cannons, the SCP universe spans across multiple realities. It's quite possible that the SCP foundation is using the Backrooms as a containment for multiple entities.

I "love" how Backgrooms content is written as "matter of fact" like it isn't some made up bs that gets worse because no one is consistent with it.

Wow thanks a lot for this video! It's great and not too spooky. I'm really intrigued and interested in stuff that scares me, and the backrooms is something I've wanted to check out for a while now, but I was afraid I'd get traumatized for a few days after watching videos on that (not a joke btw). But this video is perfect! Not too spooky but still, it's the backrooms so of course it's spooky. That was great, thanks a lot for this!
